Everyone would agree that the Residential School System was a huge blight on the history of Canada but until the mid-1990s it was almost unrecognized and unacknowledged. As the son of former residential school students, Richard Wagamese has become a voice for his generation. Indian Horse follows the life of Saul Indian Horse (also the son of former residential students) from his early days when he was being raised by his grandmother in the wilds of Northern Ontario near the Manitoba border, when he was taken into the Residential School System and his life after. Hockey was a solace for the very gifted Saul Indian Horse; an escape from the secrets, the brutality, the in-humaneness of the residential schools. Drawing from his own background, Wagamese captures the pain and suffering endured by the children in a way that is very authentic without making it a tirade against those who were in the wrong. Wagamese has written several other books: I recommend his memoir One Native Life—a candid telling of his life as the son of former residential school students.
