MILL CHASE ACADEMY Parent Weekly Newsletter Issue 28 22nd April 2016 ” Message from the Principal Dear Parents/Carers It was wonderful to see so many Year 10 parents yesterday evening. As ever, there were plenty of positive conversations about how well Year 10 are progressing on their GCSE courses. In assemblies this week, Mrs Moral has outlined all our student leadership opportunities to Year 7 through to Year 10 and I do hope that the high levels of students keen to engage in leading their school, continues for next year. An important part of this will be the application and selection process for next year’s Head Boy and Head Girl, which takes place later this term. This week students in Year 7 have started an experiment using seeds that have actually been into space. In September, 2kg of rocket seeds were flown to the International Space Station (ISS) on Soyuz 44S where they spent several months in microgravity before returning to Earth. The seeds have been distributed to schools across the country as part of Rocket Science, an educational project launched by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and the UK Space Agency. We have received a packet of 100 seeds from space, which we will grow alongside seeds that have not been to space and measure the differences over seven weeks. At this stage, nobody in school knows which seed packet contained which seeds. We have to wait until all results have been collected by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and analysed by professional biostatisticians. This nationwide science experiment will enable the children to think more about how we could preserve human life on another planet in the future, what astronauts need to survive long-term missions in space and the difficulties surrounding growing fresh food in challenging climates. We are looking forward to seeing how they grow! Mrs Pittaway Curriculum Leader for Science Languages Experience Day - Royal Holloway University On Thursday 14th April, 10 Year 8 students travelled to the University of Royal Holloway with Miss Lissoni and Miss Sibley for a Languages Experience Day where they were given the opportunity to further their language skills. To begin with there was a French, Spanish, German and Italian quiz which was challenging but we all learnt a great deal about the different countries. The morning session was focussed on giving us a taster of a new language so we were able to try Italian and German which was great fun. After our lunch break we were given a tour of the university which impressed us greatly, especially the Founder’s Building which was the original building and was incredibly beautiful and seeped in history. Did you know that until the 1950s the university was only for ladies? We didn't until then! We were astounded by the size of the university and had a tour of the gigantic library, lecture theatres and even got to see some dorms! In the afternoon we were set a task of a media mission to improve the language skills we already had. This was really enjoyed by everyone. The day ended with a session by the university students themselves where they talked about studying languages at university and we took part in a question and answer session. It was very informative and we learnt a great deal about university life in general and specifically where languages can take you in the future and how beneficial having languages can be. All 10 students immensely enjoyed the day and we would like to share some of their thoughts: 'A**' 'An inspirational trip' 'It was a hugely enjoyable educational experience' 'I can't wait to go to university' 'It was an interesting and fun experience and we learnt a great deal!' ‘A different world and extraordinary experience’ 'I would like to go back - can we go again?' 'We asked questions to the university students which allowed us to find out whether we would consider studying a language at degree level. That answer is now definitely a yes!' Well done to all the students who participated; they were a real credit to Mill Chase Academy. The trip was a resounding success and the students were impressed by the university setting. As a result, it is certainly a route that they would all like to pursue in the future.
