2016 ACC Bible Quizzing Interchangeable Words and Other Comments

Interchangeable words and other wording requirements:
1. There are three Johns: John the apostle, John the Baptist and John Mark. John alone will be used
for John the apostle. The others will need to be clarified immediately.
2. Paul = Saul - in chapter 13:21-22 King Saul will need to be clarified as King Saul or Saul son of
Kish
3. the twelve = the apostles
4. the brothers = the brothers and sisters = disciples
5. Hellenists (6:1) = Greek-speaking Jews (6:1) = Greeks (11:20) = Greek-speaking non-Jews (11:20)
6. Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, Nicolaus (5/7) = seven men of good
repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom (need all three descriptions)
7. Mesopotamia = land of the Chaldeans ≠ Haran
8. Our fathers = Israelites’ fathers = the patriarchs
9. When referring to Egypt, king = Pharaoh
10. There are three Simon’s: Simon the magician, Simon the tanner and Simon Peter.
Peter alone is an acceptable answer for Simon Peter. Simon alone is incomplete.
11. Use of the word “Lord”:
-If the scripture says “God”, we will accept “God” or “Lord God”. Lord alone is incomplete.
-If the scripture says “Jesus” or “Christ”, we will accept “Jesus”, “Lord Jesus” or “Christ”.
Lord alone is incomplete
-If the scripture only uses the name “Lord”, and is unclear if it is referring to God or Jesus, then
we will accept “Lord” as a complete answer and it does not need to be clarified. In this case,
answering “Lord God” or “Lord Jesus” will be judged on a case-by-case basis.

13. The (three) men who were sent by Cornelius = two servants and a devout soldier
14. (some of the) brothers from Joppa (10:23) = the six brothers (11:12)
15. Bar-Jesus = Elymas. Magician or Jewish false prophet incomplete.
16. Sergius Paulus. Need full name. Proconsul incomplete.
17. Judas = Barsabbas in all but one case. In questions from 9:11, Judas needs to be clarified.
18. rulers = magistrates (chapter 16)
19. (some of) the itinerant Jewish exorcists = seven sons of Sceva
20. the tribune (of the cohort) = (Claudius) Lysias
21. Ananias will always need to be clarified
22. the emperor = Caesar
23. vessel = ship ≠ boat
Other comments:
Who are “We”
In many places in the text, the exact meaning of “we” is impossible or almost impossible to determine.
1. For these areas, questions will not be asked where the answer would require “we” to be
defined.
2. A number of questions will use “we” in the question without defining exactly to whom “we”
refers.
3. A few times, the word “we” will appear as part of the answer.

A: ”whatever we needed” 28:10
