Primary @ Reddam IN THIS ISSUE: Sydney Eisteddfod News from Classrooms Sport Fixtures and Results Dear Parents and Caregivers, The Sydney Eisteddfod’s slogan is ‘dream.perform.achieve.inspire’ and last weekend our choirs did just that. Certainly I was inspired by their achievements, as they performed exceptionally well in this nationally renowned event. This report from Marcus and Ellie Bortolotti captures their remarkable success against fierce competition: On Saturday, May 28, over 200 Reddam House primary students competed in choral sections at the Sydney Eisteddfod, held at The Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood. It was an exciting and educational day for all involved. In the Infant School Choir section, the Reddam House Bunyips Choir (Year 2) was awarded first place with a mark of 92, narrowly beating the Reddam House Gumnuts (K-1), who came 2nd with 91. The adjudicator, Elizabeth Scott, commented on the Year 2 choir’s legato singing, diction and pitch. Kindergarten and Year 1 were commended on their presentation and their impressive part-singing, as well as being able to sing in a foreign language (Japanese) at such a young age. Both choirs received bonus marks for concentrating so hard and watching their conductor. In the Years 3-4 Choir section, the Reddam House Sculthorpe Choir (Years 3-4) was awarded 2nd place, with a mark of 91. First place went to Waitara Junior Voices. The adjudicator commented on the “most successful” part singing, the sophisticated dynamic contrasts achieved, and the choir’s ability to sing high while maintaining a light and focussed sound. The Reddam House 5-6 Singers did not place, however they received an impressive mark of 87. They performed one of the most difficult pieces of the day, ‘Rain Dream’ by Joseph Twist, and the adjudicator commented on their beautiful floating descant lines, how well-managed individual parts were, and the ease with which dissonance was handled. All of our primary choristers should be extremely proud of their efforts, with three places out of four entries. Combined with the success of our High School choirs, which each gained places, it was indeed an impressive weekend for the Reddam choral community. We eagerly await notice this week from the Sydney Eisteddfod jury committee as to whether any of our place-getters have been successful in progressing to The John Lamble Foundation Australasian Championship on June 19.’ I personally commend all of our choirs for their exceptional performances, as well as our Music teachers whose hours of dedication produced the memorable singing. Keeping little people so intently focussed on their task is no mean feat, and this uniformity of purpose and charming singing was no doubt the reason for their success. Katrina will be teaching Year 3. My PA, Amber Greenhalgh, and Erin Vink (Year 3 teacher) left us on Friday 27 May to start their Maternity leave, and we wish both of them everything of the best for this exciting time in their lives. Zayne Gladsden had the opportunity to meet and spend time with Kristina Karlsson, the Founder and CEO of kikki.K. Kikki.K is the stylish stationary chain she opened nearly 10 years ago, which is now expanding outside Australia to London, Paris and New York. Kristina shared her time and energy to show Zayne the product range and to explain how she came up with the ideas to design them. Zayne, a budding entrepreneur, came with his ideas on how kikki.K could expand to new products to help his class organise and study for exams more effectively. He showed her how he uses the kikki.K tear-out calendar to organise himself for each subject. Kristina inspired Zayne with her story, her passion and most of all her kindness and willingness to share it all with him. With the Eisteddfod taking most of the focus last week, there is not much sport to highlight, apart from the exciting news that Brooklyn Berry and Grant Stein attended the CIS Rugby Union Trials at Gillespie Fields, Warrawee, on Monday 30 May. We look forward to hearing how they performed! By all accounts, Revision Week went very smoothly and the children I spoke to seemed confident and well prepared for the examinations, which began today for Year 3-6 students. There was a hush around the school as the academic focus took centre stage and I wish these students all of the best for the coming week, as they show how much they have learned. In the meantime, the Year K-2 students will be enjoying their Creative Arts Week, with a funfilled programme scheduled. They not only danced beautifully, but also managed to participate in all their school activities and lessons on very limited sleep! In English we learnt two new sounds: v and w. We made a whole class volcano using our oil pastels and it was lovely to see the children working so well together in groups. The children also enjoyed making witch masks on Thursday. During Maths we learnt about position and left and right. We also learnt how to use a number line to help us subtract. The children are all very excited about presenting their Australian animal show and tell. Another big well done to all the choir children who performed so well on Saturday. We made our own clocks and were able to set times accordingly. Following on with our procedure activities, we also went into the kitchen and made some delicious pizzas. We loved writing the method of our pizza making! This week was also our trip to the Powerhouse Museum. We have been studying Transport in History and Geography this term. This trip enabled us to take a tour around the museum looking at transport from the past, the local area, as well as from around the world. What a fantastic informative day had by all! The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 16 Issue 16 Friday 3 June 2016 Page 7 YEAR 2 This week in Year 2 we learned all about different cultures from around the world. We found out about how families celebrate special events, how schools differ around the world and how different cultures worship different religions. The students have also been finding out about different cuisines from around the world and how this differs from our own tastes back here in Australia. It has been fascinating finding out about all the weird and wonderful flavours that are used all around the world and it has been fun making and tasting all the fabulous foods. YEAR 2 HEBREW In Hebrew this week the Year 2s learnt about food and what we eat for breakfast here in Australia compared to Israel. They made their own breakfast consisting of fruit and toast with either vegemite, jam, cheese or honey, and learnt the corresponding Hebrew words. The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 16 Issue 16 Friday 3 June 2016 Page 8 YEAR 3 The Year 3 students have had a busy week revising studiously for their Semester 1 Exams. They have worked diligently and responsibly, completing their revision booklets and furthering their knowledge of the Year 3 curriculum by asking insightful and relevant questions. It has been wonderful to experience the students’ abilities to retain information and apply this understanding when being asked higher order thinking questions. We wish them all the very best with the upcoming exam week and encourage them to remain conscientious, calm and collected with their efforts. Congratulations must also go to the Year 3s for their exceptional singing at The Sydney Eisteddfod Primary Choirs Competition last Saturday. The students performed beautifully and sung their hearts out, earning themselves rapturous applause and a well-deserved second place. Well done Year 3! YEAR 4 Revision Week has seen Year 4 students consolidating their knowledge of Term 2 content, ready for Mid-Year Exams. Teachers have been impressed with the excellent focus and determination of students when completing their revision booklets. There has also been a focus on exam strategies, including time management skills, question analysis and thinking skills. Students are encouraged to create flash cards using key words and definitions, which may be used to play Snap or memory games. Well done Year 4 and good luck in the exams. The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 16 Issue 16 Friday 3 June 2016 Page 9 YEAR 6 ADVANCED ENGLISH This term, the Year 6 students have been exploring the world of advertising. Their unit, ‘Go on, persuade me!’ has allowed students to analyse a range of visual and digital texts that rely on structure and language features to communicate persuasive ideas. To date, students have learnt about the persuasive strategies used by advertisers to entice people into buying their product. These strategies can be divided into three categories: pathos, logos, and ethos. Pathos, is an appeal to emotion. As students have discovered, many advertisement that use pathos will attempt to evoke an emotional response from the consumer. Sometimes, it is a positive emotion such as happiness: an image of people enjoying themselves while drinking Pepsi. Other times, advertisers will use negative emotions such as pain: a person having back problems after buying the “wrong” mattress. Pathos can also include emotions such as fear and guilt: images of a starving child persuade you to send money. Logos, is an appeal to logic or reason. An advertisement using logos will give you the evidence and statistics you need to understand fully what the product does. The logos of an advertisement will be the "straight facts" about the product: One glass of Daily Juice contains 75% of your daily Vitamin C needs. Ethos, is an appeal to credibility or character. An advertisement using ethos will try to convince you that the company is more reliable, honest, and credible; therefore, you should buy its product. Ethos often involves statistics from reliable experts, such as nine out of ten dentists agree that Colgate is the better than any other brand, or Australian dieters choose Lean Cuisine. Often, a celebrity endorses a product to lend it more credibility: Hugh Jackman promotes Lipton Ice Tea so we should drink it too. These three techniques have featured heavily in students’ work this term. In class, students have been identifying these three techniques in various advertisements and explaining how and why each is used. Below is an activity we have used in class. Test your knowledge and see if you can identify which of the below statements is an example of pathos, logos and ethos: Activity: Practise labelling pathos, logos, and ethos by placing a P, L, or E in the blank. A child is shown covered in bug bites after using an inferior bug spray. Tiger Woods endorses Nike. Sprite Zero is 100% sugar-free. A 1kg box of Omo will be enough to wash 32 loads of clothes. A commercial shows an image of a happy couple riding in a Nissan car. Babies who are sick have Panadol and start to feel better. Miley Cyrus appears in Oreo advertisements. The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 16 Issue 16 Friday 3 June 2016 Page 10 YEAR 5 AND 6 MATHEMATICS This has been a busy yet rewarding week in the Mathematics classroom. We learned about the Divisibility Rules. This makes determining whether a number is prime or composite easier. It also helps us to see if we have made careless errors when dividing. These rules let you test if one number is divisible by another, without having to do too much calculation! Our favourite Divisibility Rule is the one for 6. A number is divisible by 6 if it is even and if its digit sum is a multiple of 3! Grant Stein researched the divisibility rule for 7, which was really interesting. To determine if a number is divisible by 7, take the last digit off the number, double it and subtract the doubled number from the remaining number. If the result is evenly divisible by 7 (e.g. 14, 7, 0, -7, etc.), then the number is divisible by seven. This may need to be repeated several times. Example: Is 3101 evenly divisible by 7? 310 -2 308 -16 14 - take off the last digit of the number which was 1 - double the removed digit and subtract it - repeat the process by taking off the 8 - and doubling it to get 16 which is subtracted - the result is 14 which is a multiple of 7 (Source -http://www.aaamath.com/div66_x7.htm) We also had fun creating Factor Trees to find the prime factors of a given number. We discovered that Factor Trees do not provide all the factors of a number. We learned that if you know the factors YEAR 5 ENGLISH Figurative Language In the lead-up to Exam Week, the Year 5 students revised tools that they can use to enrich their creative writing. They looked at figurative language such as metaphors and similes. Here are some creative examples of the students’ exploration of these devices. Simile: A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid She was as petrified as a mouse in a lion’s den. He went as pale as the moonlit face of a starved vampire. They stood as proud and tall as old oaks. The wind was as wild as Zeus’ rage. Her hands were as soft as fresh cotton wool. Her heart thudded tightly inside her chest like a pounding steam train. Metaphor: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. Drawing an analogy between two things. Sebastian was a busy bull ant, powering through the exam questions one by one. The city is a concrete jungle of unforgiving chaos. His gnarled hands were claws clutching at their frightened prey. Before her holiday, Brighty was a fizzing bottle of just opened soda water, her eyes beamed with excitement. It was tense. My father’s fury boiled. It was a geyser ready to bubble over at the table. The demolition crane was a ferocious feeding monster destroying all in its path. The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 16 Issue 16 Friday 3 June 2016 Page 11 YEAR 5 & 6 SCIENCE Last week in Science, the Year 6 students put on their lab coats and safety goggles to perform a couple of investigations on reversible and irreversible changes. We boiled saltwater solution and investigated what happens when you add bicarbonate of soda to lemon Juice. All in all a fun week! As part of their Science unit on Space and Discovery, Year 5 have been investigating the planets in our solar system. Fun facts, revision and some diagrams of our Solar System rounded out the unit. Thank you to our Head of Middle School Science, Ms Dignan, for allowing us take a look at a plasma globe. Students had fun watching the filaments extending from the inner sphere to the outer. Placing a fingertip on the glass created an attractive spot for the energy to flow.
