William Blake
Now, William Blake is well-known in most English-speaking countries but his life was not full of
success and sometimes really difficult.
He was born on 28 November 1757 in London. He was the third of five children. His parents were
Catherine and James Blake. His father was a hosier and had a shop in a district of London called
Soho. The family was not a rich one and William could not go to school for long. He only learnt to read
and write. But he was very special from his early childhood. He could draw beautifully and had
fantastic visions. As a four-year-old boy he saw God's face in the window. Then, at the age of eight
he saw angels in a tree. His parents knew that he was talented and supported him. They sent him to a
drawing school at the age of ten. Unfortunately, he could only stay there for a short time. The family
did not have enough money.
William worked in his father's shop until he was fourteen. Then, his parents noticed that his talent
for drawing was really great and they sent him to an engraver James Basire. William was an
apprentice in Basire's workshop for seven years and he became an engraver himself. At the same
time he read a lot and started writing poems.
In 1782 Blake married Catherine Sophia Boucher. She could not read or write so William became her
teacher. They had no children, but were quite happy together. Catherine usually worked with William
when he prepared his poems for printing and helped him a lot. His first collection of poems Poetical
Sketches appeared in 1783. His other books of poems were Songs of Innocence and of Experience,
The Book of Thel, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Jerusalem and the Book of Job. He made
illustrations for his books himself and coloured them by hand in water colours. He could not produce
many copies of his works because he needed a lot of time to make them. Blake also made illustrations
for books by other authors. A lot of his works were inspired by the Bible.
Blake was poor for most of his life. People did not understand the greatness of his works. His ideas
were too difficult for them. He died at home in London on 12 August 1827. We do not know where
exactly his grave is. It is somewhere in Bunhill Fields in London. Later, a symbolic gravestone was put
at the place. But there is also a memorial to Blake in Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey. Only the
greatest British poets have their memorials there.
