Tesco creates 110 new jobs Members of the staff at Tesco Ballybeg ready for ‘the off’ on Monday morning. The new Tesco Ballybeg store was officially opened on Monday of this week creating 110 jobs for Waterford. Assisting Tesco Ballybeg Store Manager Alan Coughlan and Tesco Stores Director Ian Logan to cut the ribbon were two local Waterford schoolchildren, Shannon O’Neill and Leah Cleary, from St Saviour’s National School, whose prize winning entries to a poetry competition run by Tesco Ballybeg won them a range of prizes for their school, as well as the honour of helping to open the new store. Speaking at the event, Store Manager, Alan Coughlan, said: “We are delighted to welcome everyone to our brand new store in Ballybeg which offers consumers great low Tesco prices on a wide choice of groceries and lifestyle products. We look forward to getting to know our new customers in Ballybeg and to continuing a long and positive relationship with the community in Waterford.” “The new store will play an important role in helping consumers in the area to shop locally rather than travelling long distances for their regular family shopping”, Mr Coughlan said. Tesco employs over 620 people in its five stores in Waterford – Ardkeen, Ballybeg, Lisduggan, Poleberry and Tramore and over 13,000 people nationally. Tesco stores in Waterford have raised €11,000 to date for the Tesco Staff Charity of the Year, the Irish Cancer Society. Carbon footprint Consistent with Tesco’s global commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2012, Tesco Ballybeg features many environmental initiatives making the store more carbon efficient than a comparable conventional supermarket. The store has a state of the art Combined Heat and Power Unit which heats and generates electricity for the store. It also features a motion detection lighting system, rainwater harvesting and CO2 cooled fridges and freezers all of which help to reduce the store’s carbon footprint. Local suppliers to Tesco Ballybeg include Flahavan’s, Brady’s Salads and Dockrell’s Carrots. Tesco is one of the biggest supporters of the Irish food and drink industry, with €655 million worth of exports of Irish food into the Tesco Group annually. page 1 / 2 Community Champion The store is also one of the first Tesco stores to open with a Community Champion. Noel Halligan, Community Champion for the new store, will work closely with local community groups, schools, charities, sports clubs and environmental groups in the area on projects such as Green Schools, Bag Packs, local fundraisers and WEEE Recycling Days. The new Tesco Ballybeg store is open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 8pm on Sundays. This weekend Waterford county senior hurlers, John Mullane, Tony Browne will be there on Saturday afternoon as part of a family day. It should be a fun day. Why not have a Saturday night in and try a quality takeaway Tesco meal with a bottle of wine for two for just €12 and watch the X Factor show. Seamus Banim says that this is getting really popular of late. page 2 / 2
