CRIMINALS AT SCHOOL
Criminals at school are a big problem that we all have
to be aware of. Recently a well known criminal that we
shall not name robbed a student in Walmer High
School, in Grade 8 Admin Block B, inside the school
premises. The criminal dropped out of school long ago,
but still matured and developed his plans to rob innocent learners.
The robbery happened after long break time. The thief
entered the school premises, suddenly went straight to
the class of his brother and his friends, he called them
and they followed. The thief told them about a student
not living around the location. The group ran off to call
him, and came back with him immediately. He requested his cell phone. He took it out instantly and gave it to
him. He demanded it and said it belongs to him it’s no
longer his.
The learner grumbled, unconscious that he was hiding
a knife, he pulled out the knife and pointed it at the
learners head. His brother watched this happen and
ran away to report to the Principal, on the way to meet
the principal for help and inform him about what happened. The boy immediately ran to catch him while he
was climbing the fans. He caught him and brought him
to the principal. The principal instantly called the cops
then he was arrested.

SCHOOL
UMTHOMBO WOLWAZI
Walmer High School is one of the schools that have a
good foundation, good students and not forgetting intelligent and fabulous teachers. To be in a location
doesn’t mean that we don’t have dreams for our school
as other school students do. We are also having visions
to see our school in a better position with our learning
levels in the coming years. During the previous years
we didn’t have a proper school library because it was
not taken care of. The library was dirty and it looked
like an old storage room but thanks to the grade 11’S of
the English Micro Scholarship programme who had put
in their effort in fixing the school library, our library is
now something we can be proud of.
To fix the library was part of their project for that term.
The library was given a new name Umthombo Wolwazi
which means the source of knowledge. The name explains the library very well because that’s what the library is. The library is run by two teachers from America, Chanelle Williams and Kerry Kennedy who say that
education is the key to success because without education you won’t go anywhere.
6 I School
To have a school library is an opportunity for us because now we don’t have to go outside to find information when we have school assignments and projects.
We are also so fortunate to have a school library because in township schools it is scarce to have a school
library. As a school we have to thank those who contributed to the library especially Mrs. Williams and Kennedy because they sacrificed their time for us to have a
school library and everyone knows that its not easy to
leave your country and family behind but because of
them knowing that education is the key to success they
didn’t mind.
Someone once said that ``A PERSON IS A PERSON BY
OTHERS’’ and that is proven by the love of team work
that was made by our school and the American teachers. My last words are “read while you can and try and
learn everything you can because there are those who
can’t read and who need the school library in their
schools but because of money problems they cant”.

MR AND MISS FRESHET 2011
People might say that this

just be giving under statements of what it was really

took to the stage, the crowd was
screaming with delight especially
when they spotted an “eye candy”.
The next contestants were the junior
girls, all will agree when others say
they looked rather cute with their
school uniforms. On the first round
some of them definitely looked nervous but over a short space of time, as
the saying goes: they were all smiles.
This show was done in hopes
of raising funds for the
sports tour to Sterkspruit.
The tour was from 18th until
the 20th of March this year.
The Walmer High School students were starting to get
used to these Mr and Miss

turn out was really unimaginable.
After that it was time for the senior
boys to show off their dashing looks.
You could guess by the screams of the
crowd that the competition was tough
and that there were a lot of good

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT WORKING FOR RADIO? WELL WE SPOKE TO
ROSA BLAUW FROM KINGFISHER FM TO FIND OUT WHAT MAKES HER TICK.
INTERVIEW WITH
Kingfisher FM
How did you become a presenter on Kingfisher Fm?
I approached the radio station with my voice over sample CD and found out they had an internship programme, which I applied to. After testing my on-air
voice & 2 month’s of news editing, reading and practise
shows, I became a weekend presenter. Kingfisher FM
has an important role to play in uplifting & is a relevant
family lifestyle radio. I am proud that my learning experience here is one that has given me professionalism,
and also allowed me to use my talent creatively. It’s not
all about being famous or popular or having a big ego
because you’re a radio DJ.
What do you do full time?
I work in occupational health & safety and have a background in environmental policy work.
What is the importance of lifestyle radio in our community?
It brings like-minded people together. There are many
different kinds of lifestyles in Nelson Mandela Bay, and
Kingfisher FM is all about building relationships from
the most astounding relationship. We cater to individuals who have a relationship with God, but we are not
judgemental in how that relationship is formed or practised. For us, lifestyle radio is more personal, and more
about creating positive experiences for people. And it’s
also about how radio is actively working towards goals
like uniting people, helping the disadvantaged, and promoting good practise in our daily lives.

Tell us about some of the cool features found on your

My show, called the Afternoon Chill, is really about relaxing, because it’s on the weekend! I try to keep people company with sending out birthday wishes, providing current & interesting content, and playing the music

public figure or celebrity who has done charitable
things in a community, whether it’s local or global, and I
hope this helps people to see them in a different light.
Also on my show is a mini-review and giveaway of a

building good relationships, whether in personal life or
business situations.

Masifunde retrieved youth ambassadors in hopes of full
filling their goal. Masifunde and the youth went on a
three day workshop in 2009 and it was at this time that
the dream was born to create an Educational Centre for
the youth of Walmer Township. Zukile Mangcangaza
aka Shane said “The basic objective is to establish an
Educational centre with the youth on board where their
ideas will be highly appreciated in the quest of making

the dream a reality”.
He added, “We approached the municipality with the idea but we came up empty handed because there is no land available and there is a competition with the
existing land, but we as Masifunde have done fundraising and asked for sponsors
in Germany to support us because we can not let this dream die as it’s going to
benefit the youth of Walmer”. As it stands Masifunde has made an agreement
with the Municipality to make use of the Resource centre. Renovations and additions will be made in order to create an Educational Centre that can meet the
needs of the youth.
“I’m delighted to say that the youth is fully on board so we have got their 100%
full support. We would also love their dedication and commitment to be continuous. Our challenge at this stage is the fact that some of them are impatient so
they tend to give up. Basically we still meet but now we don’t meet every week
but once a month and those who meet are called the Lavel’ilanga Youth Forum”
Shane also said. This is not a closed deal if anyone is interested they should come
and join if they qualify. You should be between the ages of 16-24 and belong to
an existing community based organisation or still be in school.
Masifunde is planning to start the construction late this year around about August and the first phase would be under way in 2012. “Maybe that would be the
time for the community to see that this is for real and we think by that time large
numbers will come by to be involved. We don’t find our own place to start but
we are working with the Government because they also have their project like
ours” Shane said.

OUR
COMMUNITY
Do you ever find your self thinking about what actually
happens during an election process other than the usual focuses like the promises that are made by the political parties, the voters, the speeches, and the ballot papers? Well on the 18th of May, which was the Municipal Election day, the young people of Walmer Township
were educated in terms of what goes on during an election process and what Democracy really is. Since 1994
people are now able to practice their democratic right
to vote and even after 17 years it is still going on. Even
though voting has now become a right instead of a privilege, there are still those who take it for granted.
They don’t understand that blood was split in order for
us to have the right to vote and live in a democratic
country. During the apartheid era the right to vote was
an important part in everyone’s lives because to the
people who lived in that time, being able to vote meant
everything to them because they wanted to have their
voices heard and be able to decide for them selves
whether or not they wanted to be under a certain government. In the times we live in now voting is not necessarily taken as a life changing decision even though it
still is.
The Masifunde “Learn4Life!” ‘Election Day’ took place
at Xolelanani Youth Centre in Witbooi Street at 12
o’clock. The day started off with a movie about democracy. The movie was about how Nelson Mandela united
blacks and whites and how South Africa won the rugby
World Cup in 1995. The movie is called Invictus and it
also includes speeches from a man who fought for our
freedom. The movie taught me that you should work
hard if you want something and never loose hope even
if things didn’t go the way you planned.
After the movie the “Learn4Life!” grade 9s showed us
what happens on an election day. They were acting as
the political leaders and they were showing what is
done by the leaders in order to get votes from the community. They started to deliver speeches which is what
is basically done by the political leaders in order to get
peoples votes. The grade 9’s created their own political
parties which were; The P.P, ACOP and SAC. The parties
had political leaders who were in charge for the whole
team. In the P.P the leader was Thobela Bailey and his
mates were Siphokazi Maxamba, Nomxolisi Noqoli and
Phelisa Platjiee. The ACOP leader was Onela Lukwe and

his mates were Sophosihle Mgushelo, Anele Gqirhana,
Phumlani Rasmen and Ziyanda Cuba and the last group
was the SAC and their leader was Andisiwe Mbelekani
and his mates were Sigqibo Kutase, Anathi Badela, Siphosethu Mgushelo, Amanda Noqoli and Ayabonga
Badi. “The whole event was to educate the youth of
Walmer about the elections, to inform them about democracy and to tell them how the government is structured and elected”, Zingisa Sofoyiya commented who is
the facilitator for the “Learn4Life!” grade 9’s.
Sgqibo Kutase and Siphokazi Maxamba added that the
whole event brought lots of fun and they were proud of
themselves because they never knew that people can
gain something from them because of their age. They
carried on by telling us that during the whole thing they
learned a lot about democracy which they didn’t have
enough information about. At the end, everyone went
home that day knowing a lot about our democracy and
what happens during an election day. Today we thank
the grade 9’s for what they have done for Walmer
Township and we are encouraging them to do more
things that are part of our daily life and also we are
wishing them all the best in life. They showed us that a
person is a person by others and they brought back the
spirit of UBUNTU in our community.

INTERVIEWING A LOCAL RAPPER
Mr Pyne is a local rapper that is making waves in Walmer AND Walmer’s
Own got a rare chance to get to know
him better for our readers.
How did start in the music industry?
By falling in love with music.
What was your first experience in the
music industry?
It was hard because, I was struggling
to find a place to record and money
for me to record but now its not that
difficult because here in Walmer
there is a place where I get to record
for free.
Is it not difficult for you being a student and an artist at the same time?
No because I get a chance to write
when we get a free period and because its what they say education is
the key, I get to write at home when
I’m just sitting and doing nothing.
What was your worst stage performance?
It was 2010 in S.A s got talent because
I thought we were going to get mics or
beats in order for us to start rapping.
But we had to sing without them, so it
was the worst day of my life.
How do you entertain the audience?
By my style but I cant really explain it
and also the fans say that I have a
style to keep them entertained
What sort of daily challenges do you
face in the music industry?
The jealousy between each other because some of the others get jealous
of our songs and want to steal them.
Have you ever been embarrassed by
someone on stage?
No not ever because we go there prepared and we make sure we don’t
make mistakes when we are on stage.
How do you keep your smile?
By being nice to the fans and not being rude to them, like when they ask
something I just answer them nicely.
How often do you write a song about
a girl?
Once a year because I don’t like
writing about them cause most of the
time I’m usually writing about how I
feel.
Do you write your own songs or you
have someone who writes them for
you?
Yes I write my own songs because as I
said I get to write about how I feel.
What message would you give to the
youth?
Don’t give up and don’t lose hope, always stay strong and know what you
want in life.

BEING, WE TOOK SOME TIME TO TALK TO SISTER TUMELA FROM GQEBERA CLINIC WHO CAN
ONLY AGREE. THIS IS WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY
YOUR HEALTH IS IN
YOUR HANDS
In my opinion when it comes to health the majority of
the responsibility lies with an individual. The nurse’s
responsibility is limited to educating (about prevention,
signs and symptoms), diagnosing and prescribing medication. Yes we’ll give continuous support but we cannot
force anyone to take medication or engage in safe measures. One of the most common excuses patients give
when faced with a health challenge is either “I didn’t
know or it’s not my fault (my boyfriend does not want
to use a condom)”. Your health is your responsibility,
take ownership. The only way we as health personnel
can measure the effectiveness of our daily duties is by a
change in attitude and an improvement in health of our
patients. Working in the health centre requires a lot of
patience and understanding, as most of the illnesses
are due to social stress and poverty of which nurse have to intervene. It is in my observation that young people still perceive the clinic as NOT a place for them,
this leads to them suffering in silence and minor illnesses that could have been treated, complicating the situation. Gqbera Clinic is a youth friendly centre and has an
under utilised “Chill room” where young people can have open debates, games or just chill with Love Life staff.

IS NOT A SCARY PLACE
MY OPINION
TWITTER
IT IS ALL ABOUT
BIRDS OR BADDIES
Technology, revolution, civilisation,
twitter, these are the things that we
have come to in the 21st century. The
media and technology have always
interbred through one another and it
does not seem that the relationship
between the two will come to an end.
The name twitter itself brings the picture of networking & socialising but
somehow this all leads to the question, how much is enough networking &
socialising? Twitter is being used as a
place of marketing new businesses
and celebrities but recently celebrities
have been using this medium of communication as a place to create ‘beef’
against each other and to openly criticize each other which is not acceptable, especially when things start to get
out of control. With Twitter there are
less confidential Government topics
because since the issue of age is not
really a priority, a lot of kids find
themselves exposed to these kinds of
environments where everything is out
in the open with no boundaries.
Everyone globally can have the knowledge of what is happening everywhere.
The news of Osama bin laden’s death
became a hit and was a hot topic for
the users of twitter and a lot of information was leaked through this medium and soon enough news of the burial surfaced and then soon after people started asking questions that
were being kept as confidential
among the U.S allies and since everyone almost knew everything , people
are still arguing the systems confidentiality act which protects certain information.
after Lonwabo’s tweet it was
made public that he had been asked to leave from the
side before he was even in it.
That incident was a pure
example of how some things
are best kept away from the
public eye because everyone
has access to twitter and
some things are best when
away from spectators and
people who like to speculate
on unnecessary ideas.

In recent news South Africa’s fastest
growing cricketer, Lonwabe Tsatsobe
was involved in trials in an England
cricket team and in some case Lonwabe wrote something about having the
worst moment of his life while he joined the trial cricket team .That message soon turned out to be a big confrontation between the teams managers and the crickets men. Not so long

STORY
LIFE AFTER POVERTY
It all started when he was born,
life wasn’t easy for him at all. He’s
experienced so much pain- when
he was turning ten, his parents
past away and that’s the last thing he wanted. This led
him to being a street kid. This boy was named Sisonke.
He couldn’t face the worst challenges in his life, one of
the daily struggles he literally needed to conquer one
day at a time. He has no support system; no food and
warmth are daily challenges. This boy is not in school
and as a result he is uneducated cannot read and write,
he isn’t taught basic morals and values! Because of this,
he often tends to repeat the cycle of poverty that he
has born into. But one of the amazing things about this
boy is that he never gave up on his dreams and although he has no money and no where to go he is still
holding on to his dreams.
This boy has a dream of making it to become a novel
book writer. This boy is taking part in activities such as
begging, stealing, performing minimal wage jobs, often
he is involved in substance abuse too. Sisonke is not in
an orphanage and prefers the independence that he
has when on the streets. He is his own boss and prefers
it this way. Shelter and homes have rules and regulations; Sisonke has no boundaries and structures. He is
not used to this so prefers living on the streets.
So Sisonke was making his life more of a hell because
street kids like him, they live in boxes, eat out of bins,
they steal from others and forgot their sins. They are on
every corner, every street, begging for money or something to eat. The world is theirs to explore as they
please while time ticks over with such ease. They have
no place to go, nowhere to belong for the ones they
once knew, now are gone cursing both the heat and
cold with these factors they will grow old have true en-
emies and false friends and could deal with life demanding trend. They are a lesson of poverty, a vision of
sorrow creating a path for children of tomorrow slowly
but surely they will come and go some of their faces
you might even know, but their passing slow or fast.
Never will we learn of their lonely past, the unknown
children of the night seeking a better place, seeking a
light.
There are some who do it on purpose living comfortable lives but choose to go and live on the streets only
because they want to run and be their own bosses.
Sisonke was a kind of street kid who takes a bath by all
means and also brushes his teeth. And he was training
himself how to write by collecting news papers while
others are after food and collecting some cans to make
cash.
He was born in a poor family but luckily he got someone to trust. This old man took him. They were living in
pipes and making a living by begging and this old man
was selling tins and they were stealing and exchange
what they stole for money, as Sisonke was walking
around begging for something every single day he saw
this lady. He happened to bump into and this lady also
seemed to reply to that because every time she saw
Sisonke she was smiling non stop. One day they
bumped into each other and that’s when they got a
chance to get to know each other well. So Sisonke was
now named chilly bite!………………..

SPORT
THE GIRL WHO
LOVES CRICKET
Growing up in a family where sports
were not really a subject of interest
was the reason why I chose to learn
about them and after a while I found
myself addicted to sports and staying
up late watching the highlights of the
ICC World Cup matches.
Whilst I was in primary school the only
sport I was into was soccer, no one at
that time would have guessed that I
would also develop a love for cricket.
In those days I didn’t understand the
game of cricket and to me that meant
that I had to go through hours of
cricket, with no idea of what
was going on or whatsoever.
Now that I am in love with
cricket, it is as if I have found
the perfect partner because
whenever there is a cricket
tournament I will always be
near a television either
cheering on a team or holding my breath for it to win.
To me cricket is exhilaration,
energy; it is inspiration and a
whole lot of fun.
Nothing beats the thrill of
having your team win with a
thrashing of HATRICKS or the
kind of match where every
ball that is bowled can be
the decider of the winning
team. Some may say that the
game of cricket is hard to
understand but once you do
get the hang of it there is no
way for you to regret it.
Since I am not good at bowling or batting I find pleasure
in watching it rather than
sweating it on the field. The
life of a soon to be 15 year
old girl might be boring
sometimes but since cricket
has been a part of me and
my life it has been a very
blissful journey so far.

THE PSL CHAMPIONS
2010/2011
The road to success was one of the
toughest for this season’s local soccer
teams. The injury causing tackles, to
the show stopping dribbles and plenty
of cautions given to players with abusive play tactics. The 2010/2011 season did not let the football lovers
down, throughout the season every
team seemed competitive and
showed signs of being able to fight in
order to reach the ultimate goal of
raising the championship cup with the
utmost pride worn on their sleeve.
The tournaments like the MTN8 and
the NEDBANK charity cup challenge
helped the players to keep on going
with winning spirits. The team of the
season was the team which was
crowned as the champions, who
showed their love for the game of soccer and took themselves as a winning
team. Undoubtedly the team of this
season was ORLANDO PIRATES and
this was all because they believed
they were capable of doing whatever
they had set their sights on, what they
set their sights on was to be the best
team they could be and with that they
went to be the league champions .
This year the team went as far as to
win emphatically with three major titles under their belts.
One of the foundations of the team,
MR LUCKY LEKGWATHI who is the
captain of the squad led the team
through a number of ups and downs
24 I Sport
before they even were aware that
they could actually be part of the top
five teams which were most likely to
win the cup. The victory lap started
long before the final match of the season. It began on the first match and
then everything was left to the remaining matches and the amount of
attention they were willing to give
their team.
The coach RUDY KROL has been with
this side for some time now and it was
quite some time since the team had
won any cup title. Winning three cup
titles in a very short amount of time
was surely something there´ll cherish
because it was their first time to accomplish such a high standard even
for a team like PIRATES. On the crucial
must win matches the team`s supporters were hundred percent behind
their team and even after PIRATES
suffered a heart-wrenching 3-0 defeat
against AJAX CAPE TOWN. The match
was just a month before the crowning
of the league champions.
Even after the countless defeats, the
team showed good sportsmanship
and took every game as their last.
Hopefully this kind of soccer lives on
in the whole African continent.

Fashion
What is fashion?
Fashion is a way of
behaving, dressing or
doing
something
uniquely Fashion is
when you’re keeping
up with the NEWEST
style
BE YOURSELF,
BE ECCENTRICALLY
YOU!
How did you start
loving fashion?
I was very young
when I started to love
fashion I used to cut
pictures of the coolest and most stylish
clothes and paste
them on my books.
As I was growing up I
found a way of being
unique and having my
own style of dressing.
I am always delighted
to find something
new and interesting
to wear. I like being
fresh, funky and fabulous that’s why I call
myself ‘MY FFF’
What can you say to
the people who don’t
love fashion?
Just express yourself
and be a little eccentric or unusual when
putting together an
outfit. Go BOYS go
GIRLS have fun and
mix things up a little
be yourself and be
uniquely fashionable!
