Independence Day of the United States, also referred to as the Fourth of July or July
Fourth in the U.S., is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of
Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen
American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and

"Taxation without representation!" was the battle cry in America’s 13 Colonies, which
were forced to pay taxes to England's King George III despite having no representation in
the British Parliament. As dissatisfaction grew, British troops were sent in to quell the early
movement toward rebellion. Repeated attempts by the Colonists to resolve the crisis
without military conflict proved fruitless.
On June 11, 1776, the Colonies' Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and
formed a committee whose express purpose was drafting a document that would formally
sever their ties with Great Britain. The committee included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin
Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. Jefferson, who was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer, crafted the original draft document (as seen
above). A total of 86 changes were made to his draft and the Continental Congress officially adopted the final version on July 4, 1776.
Bonfires and Illuminations
On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia's
Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4,
1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with
bonfires, bells and fireworks.
The custom eventually spread to other towns, both large and small, where the day was
marked with processions, oratory, picnics, contests, games, military displays and fireworks.
Observations throughout the nation became even more common at the end of the War of
1812 with Great Britain.

Maintenance with Tom
July Home Maintenance Tips
1. Stock up on Chalk! Any drugstore, Wal-Mart or dollar store has tubs of sidewalk
chalk on sale now, so stock up for these clever uses around your home.
a. Grease stains and ring around the collar? – rub white chalk on the stain, and
then wash as normal.
b. Silver jewelry, utensils and tools – bundle several pieces in a cheesecloth and
store with these items, the chalk absorbs excess moisture and humidity, protecting
from tarnish and pitting.
c. Musty closets? – bundle several pieces together and hang in your closets, controls humidity.
d. Ants? – Sprinkle ground chalk around doorways and window sills, “they” say
ants won’t cross it.
2. To keep spiders, mice and wasps away from your house, put several drops of
peppermint oil on a cotton ball and set in the area where you have seen activity.
You can dilute with a little water in a spray bottle and spray bee’s nests to kill larvae.
3. Make sure to clean the lint from the entire clothes dryer vent system, from the
dryer to the exterior vent cap.
4. Change the filter in your Air Conditioning system. Thirty days is the longest you
should wait, especially during peak usage months.

Here are Health Fitness Revolution’s 10 Tips for
your Healthiest July 4th:

Wear Sunscreen: Although being outside in the sun is a great way to absorb some healthy Vitamin
D, make sure to use sun protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Studies show that sunburns increase risk of skin cancer by 12 times!

Eat Light: No one wants to eat a heavy filling meal when you’re outside in the heat. So make salads
and sides the main course. Grill your meal. You will probably be snacking all day, so make healthy
snacks like veggie sticks readily available.

Stay Hydrated with Water: No matter where you are in America, July is hot! Be sure to drink
plenty of water and keep your body from overheating, and stay away from caffeinated and sugary drinks
that dehydrate you. Keep plenty of fresh fruit on hand too as fruit is packed with vitamins, fiber and water.

Start and Active Tradition: Be it an annual family kickball tournament, neighborhood volleyball
game or a pre-dinner hike, an annual activity will be a welcome event to any July 4th celebration. Not
only will it get everyone’s blood pumping but it will also give you stories to share for years to come!

Wear Some Earplugs: The sounds of summer—such as fireworks and marching bands—can actually
damage your hearing. In fact, fireworks have a sound decibel of 150, and ear protection is recommended
for decibels above 85.

Make Sure you’re Using a Clean Grill: A dirty grill can be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. After you are done grilling, do a quick clean up of any visible debris and food, then turn up the heat
and let the grill burn off a bit.

Keep Hot food Hot and Cold food Cold: Be sure you cook all of your food to the recommended
temperature to destroy any harmful bacteria and keep things that should be refrigerated in a cooler over
ice. If this is not possible, consider taking such items off the menu so that no one gets sick.

Skip Sugary Deserts: This is the season when tons of fresh fruit is available from the grocery,
farmers markets, and fruit stands! Cut up strawberries and melon or grill peaches, pineapple or bananas

to satisfy your sweet tooth without adding unnecessary processed sugar.
Make Healthy Drinks: Instead of providing sugar filled sodas to guests, make healthy variations
such as home-made iced tea sweetened with agave nectar, or even sparkling cucumber water!

Play Lawn Games: Encourage your party guests to bring their favorite lawn game instead of yet
another dessert. Then you can take turns trying out all the different games. Plus, it encourages everyone to be active and fit!
