HISTORY
The Big Ten Conference has seen just a handful of dynasties, but it is fair to say that the Indiana women’s tennis program is one of those
dynasties. Indiana’s tradition of excellence in
women’s tennis started in 1980 when Lin Loring’s
Hoosiers won their first of 15 conference crowns
over a span of 19 years.
The Hoosiers have appeared in 25 national
championships. On 39 occasions an Indiana athlete has competed in the NCAA singles tournament and 21 teams have competed in NCAA
doubles play.
The Hoosiers’ success on the national scene
started well before the NCAA began sponsoring a
championship in the sport. Kelly Ferguson and Bev
Ramser became the first two Hoosiers to earn AllAmerica honors in 1979. Two seasons later,
Heather Crowe and Tina McCall added their
names to the list of Hoosier All-Americans. On 24
occasions, a Hoosier has been named an AllAmerican in either singles or doubles play.
Indiana’s most significant season came in 1982
when the Hoosiers captured the AIAW National
Championship, the first women’s national championship in Indiana history. Crowe won the AIAW
singles crown that same season as she and Tracy
Hoffman earned All-America honors. The
Hoosiers also won the Big Ten crown, and Loring
was named Big Ten, Midwest and National Coach
of the Year.
Loring has been named Big Ten Coach of the
Year on five occasions (1982, 1988, 1992, 1995,
2007), Midwest Coach of the Year seven times
(1981, 1982, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 2004) and
National Coach of the Year twice (1982, 1992).
On April 11, 2004, Loring won his 600th match
at IU as Indiana defeated Michigan State, 6-1, in
East Lansing. He won his 300th Big Ten match in
Wisconsin on April 2, 2006 with a 5-2 win over the
Badgers.

Head coach Lin Loring was awarded the 1992 Wilson Division Intercollegiate Tennis Coach of the
Year. Presenting the award are tennis legend Chris Evert and Wilson representative John Embree.
In 1987, Indiana began its renowned string of
nine consecutive Big Ten championships. Janet
McCutcheon and Kelly Mulvihill both earned AllAmerica honors that year.
The following year, Mulvihill earned the first of
two straight Big Ten Player of the Year awards.
Teammate Stephanie Reece became the first
Hoosier to win Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors in 1989. It was the first of three straight Big Ten
Freshman of the Year honorees, as Deb Edelman
was recognized as the conference’s top freshman
in 1990, followed by Jody Yin in 1991.
An Indiana athlete has won Big Ten Player of
the Year honors on eight occasions since the
award was first established in 1988. Edelman won
it twice, in 1990 and 1992. Reece captured the
award in 1991 and shared it with Edelman the following season as an Indiana athlete either won or
shared the honor for a record five seasons in a
row.
Reece and Edelman also combined to earn AllAmerica honors on nine occasions as Reece was
honored in 1989 (doubles), 1991 (singles and doubles) and 1992 (singles and doubles), while Edelman was recognized in 1991 (doubles), 1992
(singles and doubles) and 1993 (doubles). Rachel
Epstein also took home All-America honors in
doubles play during the 1993 season.
Success in the Big Ten has not been exclusive
to just the championship. Between 1978 and 1985
the Hoosiers won 104 consecutive Big Ten
matches, a feat unprecedented in the sport.
Off the court, Indiana has produced a conference-record 92 Academic All-Big Ten selections
in the past 30 years and Loring’s players have all
gone on to successful careers both on and off the
court.
Excellence and Indiana University tennis go
hand in hand. Excellence, according to Loring, can
only be earned through hard work and dedication.
DID YOU KNOW...
• Indiana head coach Lin Loring is the sport’s
all-time winningest coach (698-248).
• Indiana has appeared in 25 of the 30 NCAA
Championships.
• Indiana has had 24 All-Americans in singles
and doubles.
• Indiana has won 16 of the last 28 Big Ten
Championships.
• Indiana has had eight Big Ten Players of
the Year.
• Indiana has had 70 All-Big Ten selections.
• Indiana has won one team national
championship (1982).
• Indiana has had two singles national cham
pions and one doubles national champion.
• Indiana won a record 104 straight Big Ten
matches between 1978-1985.
• Indiana has had a record 92 Academic AllBig Ten selections.
• Indiana was ranked in the nation’s top 20
for 17 straight seasons (1978-1995).
“I like my players to work to be the best tennis
players they can be,” Loring said. “I don’t emphasize winning or losing, but improvement. As long
as they continually work on improving their
games, then the wins and good performances will
come as a result. If they don’t, then we can still
take satisfaction in the effort that was expended.”
History speaks for itself. The record book
shows all that Indiana has accomplished in Loring’s 30 seasons. Playing for Indiana University
means being among the very best in the entire nation. It means playing a key role in a successful
program, and continuing one of the nation’s most
impressive winning traditions. Playing at Indiana
means competing at a level of excellence rivaled
by few other programs in the nation.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
NCAA SUCCESS
Under Indiana head coach Lin Loring, Indiana
has consistently directed numerous teams and individuals to the NCAA Championships. Sarah
Batty and Linda Tran teamed up to represent the
Hoosiers at the NCAA Championship in 2004,
claiming All-America honors in doubles action.
Twelve years ago, the NCAA changed to a tournament format for teams, where 64 teams qualify
for regional competition, out of 320 Division I
women’s tennis programs. Prior to the change,
only 16-20 teams qualified each year for the team
tournament. The team tournament is followed by a
64 singles draw and a 32 doubles draw. Indiana is
one of the few schools that has been consistently
represented in all three tournaments.
Since 1990, Loring has led IU to the NCAA tournament 16 times. The Hoosiers have reached the
second round or beyond 10 times.
The Indiana University women’s tennis team
carries an NCAA Tournament tradition that few
can parallel. Over the last 30 years, IU has pro-
duced tennis players who have had success not
only in the Big Ten Championships, but in the National Championships as well. In 1982, the
Hoosiers captured the AIAW national title by defeating California in the tournament finals. That
same year, Heather Crowe became the first female IU athlete to win a national title when she
captured the AIAW singles crown. Since then, the
Hoosiers have compiled 70 All-Big Ten awards
and 24 All-America honors.

INDIANA HOOSIERS
PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES
SCHOLARSHIPS
VISITS
Indiana has full-grant tennis scholarships
available for experienced USTA tournament
players. Women applicants should meet one of
the following criteria:
• A strong national ranking
• A top-10 ranking from a strong USTA section
• A top-five ranking from other USTA sections
These are general guidelines and exceptions
can be made. Players also may be considered
for a scholarship after making the team. Eight
to 10 athletes comprise the squad.
Scholarships are only awarded to players
head coach Lin Loring has seen play. He normally attends the Midwest Closed Championship (Indianapolis), the Girls’ 18 Clay Courts
(Memphis), the Girls’ 18 Intersectional (Calif.),
the Girls’ 18 Nationals (Calif.), the Girls’ 18 Winter Nationals (Phoenix), the K-Swiss Tournament (Aurora, Ill.) and selected national opens.
Players not attending these tournaments, and
foreign players, should arrange to send a DVD
or video videotape of their game.
Top applicants are encouraged to arrange a
campus visit. Scholarships are usually
awarded the second week in November as allowed by the NCAA. Indiana University follows
all Big Ten and NCAA recruiting rules and regulations.
Head coach Lin Loring is available to meet
with all athletes interested in the tennis program. Please allow him at least a week’s notice when arranging a visit to campus. Top
scholarship candidates will have their travel
expenses paid for, within the NCAA limits, by
the IU tennis program.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“The women’s tennis program at Indiana provides its athletes with the top facilities and
best equipment to help players develop their
game. The support systems from the training
staff to the academic staff are second to
none. There is no better place to play tennis
than Indiana.”
HOUSING
First-year students are required to stay in one
of the many on-campus residence halls. Dormitory living is the best way for new students
to make lasting friendships with others who
are making the same academic and social adjustment.
Indiana has one of the finest residence hall
systems in the country. The spacious and comfortable residence halls include excellent living accommodations as well as facilities for
recreation and social activities. Many dormitories are geared towards special interest
groups and each has a fine dining facility. Firstyear tennis team players usually stay in the
Foster Quadrangle because of its proximity to
the athletic complex and the library.
With 33 fraternities and 25 sororities on campus, Indiana boasts one of the nation’s largest
and most active Greek systems. Many students
choose to live in off-campus apartments or
houses, which are located all around the city of
Bloomington.
Deb Edelman -- four-time All-American, twotime Big Ten Player of the Year
“Choosing Indiana was definitely the right decision. I got to play against the country’s top
players on some of the country’s best courts
with one of the country’s top programs. The
experience was incredible.”
Stephanie Reece -- five-time All-American,
two-time Big Ten Player of the year
Located on the north side of Assembly Hall, the Indiana University Tennis Center hosts men’s and women’s tennis events.
