Alistair Moffat was born in Kelso in 1950. After school he entered St Andrew's
university , playing First XV rugby, First XI cricket, basketball and athletics, somehow
acquiring a degree in medieval history between matches and training sessions. He
then completed further studies at Edinburgh and London universities. In 1976 he
began a five-year period in charge of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, before moving
in as
the
Scottish
Borders

and Chief Executive of
Network Production. In 1999 he resigned these posts and settled in the Borders,
where he is Director of the Lennoxlove and Borders Book Festivals. Recent books
