This class format is set up to give you an anytime, anywhere option. You usually get your text book (if applicable) in the mail, and then classes are set up so that you can access assignments online and return them to the instructor online by the specified date. Some classes involve chatroom for class discussion. Tests are also done online, usually in a secure, time-limited format. There are all kinds of ways to take online classes through NJC: 1) NJC Online Classes--created by and taught by NJC faculty members. These classes are listed with all other classes. (See page 34) Late Start Classes and B-Term Classes--Usually offered the last 8 weeks of a semester, these classes allow students to pick up some extra credits to keep their full-time status, or to take preparatory classes to get ready for degree level classes the next semester. See page 33. J-Term Classes--Also referred to as “January term”. This select group of classes is offered in early January and includes two weeks of intense, accelerated learning (classes typically run 8 a.m. to 12 noon five days a week) This is a chance for you to get a jump on your spring semester. If you are taking a CCCOnline class, you will need to access that site http://ccconline.org/ for directions. Pay close attention to know if you are enrolling in an NJC online or hybrid class or a CCCOnline class. What you must know about taking online classes Online courses are NOT EASIER than on campus classes. In fact, many students will say it requires much more time and commitment. Online courses are NOT SELF-PACED or independent learning. You are required to complete course work by the due dates indicated by the instructor within the course. Online courses USE TECHNOLOGY. You need to be comfortable with up and down loading your assignments as well as moving them in and out of your word processing software. You must be willing and able to commit your time, approximately 8-10 hours of work per week, per course. There are two ways you may take online classes through NJC ʇNJC Online and Hybrid Classes These classes are taught by NJC instructors and they are designated in the class listings as those classes with an “H” (Hybrid”) or “N” (Online) in the section number. See page 34 in this booklet for a list of these classes. You may enroll and do all your work for these classes through the NJC website www.njc.edu ʇCCCOnline Classes These classes are offered through the state community college system. This Spring ‘16, four different sessions will be offered. One 15 weeks, one 10 weeks and two 6 weeks in length. You may sign up for these classes and designate NJC as your “home” college. Your grade will show up on your NJC transcript just as if you had taken it through NJC. See pages 35-37 for a list of these classes. You may enroll and do all your work for these classes through the CCCOnline website: http://ccconline.org/ Know the difference. The successful student will view their online course as a convenient way to receive their education, not an easier way. Curriculum offerings may be added, dropped or altered to meet changing academic, instructional and student needs. All charges for tuition, fees, room and board are subject to change as required by varying circumstances. Think about your student loans Today the average college student with debt has around $25,000 in student loan debt. One of the advantages at Northeastern is with a smaller tuiƟon than four year schools, our average debt level is around $10,000 per student that borrows. Along with a lower debt level, most years over half our graduates leave without having any student loan debt. Student loans can help Įll a criƟcal gap in money in paying for school, but be careful. If you can’t pay back your loans and go into default you need to worry about the following: i The enƟre unpaid amount of your loan becomes due and payable. i Your default will be reported to naƟonal credit agencies. i You may be sued, have your federal tax refund or federal payments be taken from you, or your wages may be garnished so your employer is required to send part of your salary to pay oī your loan. i You will have to pay addiƟonal collecƟon fees and costs, plus court costs and aƩorney fees. i You’ll lose eligibility for other federal student aid and most other federal beneĮt programs. i When you graduate you have a six month grace period before you have to start paying oī your student loans, but your loan debt will start to add interest right away. You need call 1Ͳ800Ͳ848Ͳ0983 or go onͲline to www.dl.ed.gov to Įnd your servicer and set up the right payment plan for you. What will I have to repay Amount Borrowed Monthly Payment # of Months Total Repaid $5,000 $10,000 $25,000 $50,000 $58 $115 $288 $575 120/10 yrs. 120/10 yrs. 120/10 yrs. 120/10 yrs. $6,904 $13,809 $34,524 $69,048 If you run into trouble when repaying your student loan, contact your loan servicer. There are Ɵmes they can put your loan on deferment or forbearance which can help you stay out of default and give you some Ɵme to get back on your feet. Be smart. Only borrow what you know you need. It all has to be repaid later. Northeastern Junior College Fall 2016 Schedule 45 Q&A Colorado’s College Opportunity Fund= COF Q: What is the College Opportunity Fund and how is it different from state funding now and in the past? A: In July of 2004, the College Opportunity Fund (COF) (C.R.S. 23-18-101 through 23-18-207) became law. The legislation (SB 04-189) established a new student-based process for providing state funds to institutions of Higher Education. Institutions currently receive funding directly from the State of Colorado in the form of a general fund subsidy to educate in-state higher education students based on a full-time-equivalent student formula. Starting fall 2005, students will see the amount the state contributes to the college on their behalf and direct the stipend to the institution. Students will be able to monitor the number of credit hours for which their stipend has paid. Q: What is a stipend? A: "Stipend" means the amount of money per credit hour paid by the State of Colorado on behalf of an eligible undergraduate student – Colorado resident with a Social Security number – who is attending a state institution of higher education. The first time an eligible undergraduate student is able to receive a stipend will be for the fall semester of the 2005-06 academic year. The Colorado Legislature will set the specified amount of the stipend per credit hour annually. The amount will never exceed the student's total in-state tuition. The value of the per credit hour stipend will be the same for each eligible undergraduate student, regardless of the state college or university the student attends. If an eligible undergraduate student attends a participating private college or university in the state of Colorado, the per-credit-hour amount will be 50 percent (50%) of the annually-set stipend amount. Total stipend hours per student, per semester, are determined by the school and reported to the College Opportunity Fund (COF). COF matches student information with Stipend Application Account information in its database (the information you provide when creating a stipend account) and disburses the stipend amount directly to colleges and universities on behalf of those eligible undergraduate students identified by the school. Q: When does the College Opportunity Fund take effect? A: The College Opportunity Fund will begin July 1, 2005. Continuing students and new students starting school in the fall can sign up now for the stipends. Eligible undergraduates attending the fall 2005 semester will be the first program recipients. Q: Why do I need to set up this account? A: COF is a new way to distribute the state funds for college. In the past, the funds were sent directly to the college. With COF, the funds will be sent to the college on behalf of each individual student. Students will be able to see the state’s contribution – their stipend – on their tuition bills. Colorado residents who don’t sign up for COF will have to pay their tuition plus the portion the state would have paid. Q: How do I sign up for the College Opportunity Fund? A: You can sign up for COF only online at www.collegeincolorado.com, or click on the COF link at www.njc.edu. The process is simple. Type your name, Social Security number and date of birth in the appropriate boxes and click on the “submit” button. You only have to sign up once, even if you transfer to a different college. Q: Do I need to sign up for COF every semester? A: No. Once you have signed up for COF you will not need to do it again. Your stipend will follow you. When you register for classes, you may need to authorize the college to collect money from your stipend. Q: Who is eligible? A. Students classified as in-state for tuition purposes and enrolled at state institutions of higher education are eligible for COF. Additionally, students enrolled at participating private institutions of higher education may be eligible if the institution is approved for the program by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE) and the student: is classified as an in-state student for tuition purposes; is a graduate of a Colorado high school or has successfully completed a non-public home-based educational program in Colorado; demonstrates financial need through the student's eligibility for the federal Pell Grant, or its successor program; and 46 meets any other eligibility requirements established by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE). Note: "Eligible Undergraduate Student" does not include students enrolled in an off-campus, extended campus, or continuing education class not supported by state general fund moneys, except as approved by the CCHE. Q: I am a transfer student, am I eligible for COF? A. The state will develop a policy to determine the number of credit hours for which continuing and transfer students may receive a stipend from the College Opportunity Fund. All institutions will be required to follow this policy. If you have questions on this, be sure to contact your school or CCHE. Q: What if I do not have a Social Security number? A: Students must have a Social Security number to sign up for the COF. If they do not have one, they will not be eligible to receive the stipend that covers part of their in-state tuition. Q: How much is the College Opportunity Fund stipend worth? A: It will vary. The per-credit-hour-stipend amount will be determined each year by the Colorado Legislature. Q: Can I attend more than one institution and receive the College Opportunity Fund stipend at each institution that I attend? A: Yes, but you need to apply to, be admitted by and register at each eligible institution you want to attend. Each institution then must verify your enrollment and the number of credit hours you are taking there. You – the student – must indicate on your college application that you are seeking payment of the stipend to multiple institutions. The hours taken at each institution count against your maximum number of hours –145 – that the College Opportunity Fund covers. Q: What happens if I am not able to complete a course that is paid by the stipend? A: The stipend amount applying to your tuition bill is not refundable if you withdraw or fail a course. Q: Can I take as many credits as I would like? A: No. Credits limits are set according to the student’s status. For example, a freshman student will have 145 credits while a sophomore will have 115 credits. The total number of credits available to students under COF should be enough to earn an associate’s and a bachelor’s degree. Q: Will the College Opportunity Fund pay for all of my courses? A: No. Eligible students may use their stipends only for college-level undergraduate courses. The following courses will NOT be paid for by the College Opportunity Fund: x x x x x basic skills; "Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act" courses; high school Fast-Track courses; international baccalaureate courses; advanced placement courses; and graduate courses. Q: What can I do to be sure I am using my credits wisely? A: A degree plan will help you outline the classes you will need to earn their degree or certificate in the shortest amount of time and with the least number of credits. Because COF limits the number of credits you can take, you will need to meet regularly with an adviser or case manager to be sure you are on the right track.
