Pulse of the North Volume 1, 2016 February/March HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL! 2016 is shaping up to be another year full of opportunities for you to connect with other fellow Carers and participate in a wide range of activities offered at NCN. FIRST, I would like to extend a BIG thank you to Rotary Playford for donating Christmas presents and Uniting Care Wesley Bowden for supporting over 50 of our families with Christmas hampers. They were gratefully received. I would also like to announce that before Christmas the Commonwealth Government launched the National Carers Gateway. The Carer Gateway consists of a website and phone service to help Carers across Australia to access practical information and resources to help them in their caring role. To find out more visit the website www.carergateway.gov.au or call 1800 422 737. Before the end of 2015 Northern Carers Network (NCN) collected information from more than a hundred people using a survey and focus groups. Results highlighted that NCN is well known for our friendliness and continuity of staff, high quality support, flexibility and genuine interest in the lives of Carers and clients. It was stated this makes a ‘Big’ difference to Carers and their families. Findings also revealed there was a great deal of support for NCN to provide services to people with disabilities and to Northern Carers Network Inc. Shop 15 130 Peachey Road, Davoren Park, 5113 PO Box 1538, Davoren Park South, 5113 relocate. These findings will allow us to develop future directions and priorities for NCN and for that we are most grateful and want to thank you for your participation. Good news! In addition to Psychology, Massage, Carers Holiday Program, Volunteer Telephone Services & Art classes currently on offer to Carers, NCN will be providing Computer Tuition supported by volunteers. At the ‘Celebration of Ability’ event in December last year, Gina was presented with a Mayoral Award by Glen Docherty, Mayor of the City of Playford. 3 ‘breakthru’ Young Carer and Sibling Program - 7 to 18 years Hi Everyone Well 2015 absolutely flew by and our young carers once again had a fantastic time with our ‘breakthru’ groups and school holiday programs. Again this year we did activities such as the Port Adelaide Dolphin Cruise, The Maritime Museum, Ten pin bowling, Mini golf, Gym sports, Aqua splash and of course our most fav day of the year, Laser skirmish in the Mount Crawford Forest. And that was just in the school holidays !!! We will once again be running 3 ‘breakthru’ groups in 2016. As usual we will be having a monthly Gawler group, Playford group and a Kilburn group. Throughout the school terms the actual ‘breakthru’ groups were very successful with numbers steadily increasing and new young carers engaging with us on a continual basis. Sports like basketball, soccer and dodgeball are always popular. Often we will make up a game completely on our own. Its always fun to see how the new game pans out. We also have a lot of fun doing crafts. We usually try and theme the art to a particular time of year, for instance we make Easter and Christmas crafts, and even have fun making Halloween craft stuff. Last year at the Gawler Breakthru group, we did an event called “drumbeat”. Each participant learnt different beats on a Djembe (African Drum) we would then talk about some of the rhythms and how they may have a parallel to life etc. A real rewarding experience for our young carers. Therefore through 2016 we will be bringing the “Drumbeat” program to all of our locations. Check out all this years dates and locations of our monthly breakthru events below. Bye for now Damo. My name is Angela Creagh and I have recently joined the team at Northern Carers Network as the Community Care Service Coordinator. I will be responsible for developing and coordinating the Home Care Program. You may be aware that we have recently begun to employ our own Home Care Workers to deliver respite support. This may have resulted in some changes around Support Workers and I am here to assist in making this transition as smooth as possible. I started my career working as a care worker in a nursing home at a very young age. From there I have branched out in many other areas within the community services sector, developing a strong background working in Aged Care, Disability, Mental Health, Youth and Lifestyle. In my spare time, I have a passion for singing fishing and spending time with my wonderful family. I work Monday to Friday 9am-5pm so if you are in the office, please pop by my desk and say hello. I would love to meet everyone involved in this wonderful organisation I have been lucky to become be a part of. Thank you Angela My name is Pat Ingram. I was born in Victoria and grew up mainly on farms and little country towns in Victoria. My heritage is Aboriginal and English. My Mother was a Wemba Wemba/Yorta Yorta woman and my Father was born in Australia but his parents migrated from UK and were from Cornwall. I have been married for 38 years I have a daughter and a son. They are both married and have lovely partners. I also have three beautiful grandchildren 8, 5 and 3 years old. I love being a grandmother and you will often hear me speak about my grandchildren. My family and I have lived in South Australia for the last 16 years. I have worked in the Aboriginal community in paid and volunteer work for most of that time. My last role was with Aboriginal Sobriety Group as their Quality improvement officer. I am currently serving on the Board at Nunkuwarrin Yunti. As well as that I have worked at Tandanya with local and Interstate Aboriginal artists. I started working here at Northern Carers on Jan 4th 2016. I am working with Charmayne in the Kindred Spirits program as the Aboriginal Family Support Worker. I am excited to be involved with this program as I believe it will be a great benefit to Aboriginal families and their children. 5 Health and Wellbeing How to store food safely in the fridge Decay, mould, and odours can spread among foods in the refrigerator. Follow these tips to keep foods―including leftovers―fresher longer and reduce the risk of contamination. Meat, fish & poultry Keep all fresh meat, fish, and poultry in its store wrapping. (Re-wrapping increases the risk of exposing the food to harmful bacteria.) If the item didn't come in a Styrofoam tray, slide a plate underneath it to catch any drippings Dairy Leave cottage cheese, yogurt, sour cream, milk, and cream in the containers they came in. But after transferring milk to a pitcher or sour cream to a serving bowl, don't return them to the original containers. Instead, tightly cover the pitcher or bowl with plastic wrap. Store hard cheeses in the store wrapping until you use them, then wrap them in wax paper, foil, or loose plastic. Plastic milk bottles make more sense than cardboard cartons, since bacteria can grow near the cardboard spout and enter a glass of milk every time you pour. Nevertheless, as long as you use the milk within its shelf life, it should be safe to drink. Fruit and vegetables Keep fruits and vegetables separate and store like with like: apples with apples, carrots with carrots. Fruits and vegetables give off different gases that can cause others to deteriorate. Store fruits and vegetables susceptible to drying out in perforated or unsealed plastic bags to maintain a moist environment yet still allow air to circulate. Don't wash produce before refrigerating it. The dampness can make it mold and rot more quickly. 6 Leftovers Store all leftovers in airtight, leak proof clear containers or wraps. Divide leftovers into small, flat containers so that they cool faster. (Some bacteria spores survive the cooking process and may germinate if the food is at room temperature long enough.) Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of cooking. And there's no need to wait for piping-hot foods to cool down before storing them―modern refrigerators can handle the heat. Remove the stuffing from the turkey and refrigerate it in a separate container. Left together, they may not cool fast enough, which can be unsafe. Don't refrigerate leftover cranberry sauce or other foods in cans. Once a can is opened, residual metal on the rim can leach into food and leave a metallic taste. Don't stuff the refrigerator too full. Cool air needs to circulate to keep food at a safe temperature. For Your Information ESSENTIAL MEDICAL EQUIPMENT PAYMENT – FROM CENTRELINK.
