Newlands Spring Primary School Academy Trust Admission of Pupils for the School Year 2016 – 2017 Policy and numbers Children will be admitted into Reception at the start of the Academic Year of their fifth birthday. Parents have the right for their child to start full time in September or to defer their child’s entry until later in the school year if they wish. The parent cannot defer entry beyond the beginning of the term after the child’s fifth birthday, nor beyond the academic year for which the original application was accepted. Where entry is deferred, the school must hold the place for the child and not offer it to another child. Parents can request that their child attends part-time until the child reaches compulsory school age. For parents opting to take up a part-time place this will be mornings only. The number of intended admissions for the year commencing 1st September 2016 will be 58. The responsibility for admissions lies with the Governors, but initial application for admission should be made to Essex County Council, Planning and Admissions, County Hall, Chelmsford CM1 1GS for a Common Application Form, which should be returned to Essex County Council. Completed application forms must be received by the LA by the closing date, for entry during the following academic year. All applications received by the closing date will be given priority over any applications received after the closing date. Date will be advised by the LA. The school will maintain a waiting list for late/unsuccessful applicants for the duration of the autumn term. Over-subscription Where applications for admission exceed the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied in the order set out below, to decide which children to admit. 1. Looked after children. A ‘looked after child’ or a child who was previously looked after but immediately after being looked after, became subject to an adoption, residence or special guardianship order. A looked after child is a child who is (a) in the care of a local authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (see the definition in section 22(1) of the Children Act 1989). 2. Children living within the priority admissions area (a list of roads within the priority admissions area is available from the school.) 3. Where the child has a sibling attending the school.* 4. Remaining applications. In the event of oversubscription within any of the above criteria, priority will be determined by straight line distance, with those living closest being given the highest priority. Children with a statement of Special Educational Needs are required to be admitted if the school is named. The Race Relations Act 1976 and the Amendment 2000 outlaws discrimination on the grounds of colour, race, nationality or ethnic and national origins. Applications The LA will send parents a Common Admissions form which must be returned to the LA by the date they specify. Appeals The school has established arrangements for appeals against non-admission which will include an independent element. Details of admissions and appeals arrangements are available. * Please see definition of sibling in LA Primary Booklet Approved at the FGB meeting
