March 2017
Renaming SH1
Renaming State Highway 1
HOW IT WILL WORK
We’re inviting the community to have their say
on names.
Now that the Expressway is here we have a unique
opportunity to rename the existing State Highway 1
(SH1). From 7 March to 14 April 2017 we’re inviting
the Kāpiti Coast community to have their say on
name options.
The opportunity to participate in the Council-led
process to rename sections of SH1 is open to
everyone in the Kāpiti Coast community.
From 7 March until 14 April 2017 you can put
forward your suggestions for renaming any or all
of the seven sections of SH1 to be renamed.
All suggestions put forward for renaming sections
of SH1 will be considered by the Community
Boards and then presented to the Council for their
decision later this year.
BACKGROUND
Once the names are agreed by the Council a
formal notification process will follow. We’ll keep
you informed of progress.
Within two years of the Mackays to Peka Peka section
of the Kāpiti Expressway opening, the NZ Transport
Agency will hand over responsibility for SH1 to the
Kāpiti Coast District Council and it will become a fitfor-purpose local road.
HOW TO HAVE YOUR SAY
Seven sections of SH1 will be renamed including those
sections which are currently referred to as SH1 and
Main Road. Amohia Street and Rimutaka Street will
remain unchanged.
There are a number of ways you can have your
say on name options for the seven sections of the
existing SH1. You can:
1. talk to your community board and let them
know what you think: kapiticoast.govt.nz/YourCouncil/Elected-Members
