THE NEW YORK CATHOLIC
WORKER’S ST. JOSEPH HOUSE
is a community organization that offers
a weekday soup line, donated clothing
and housing to people in need. We are
so inspired by the incredible work they
do and asked community member Jim
Reagan why they choose to serve Equal
Exchange coffee:
©Bob Cromwell, cromwell-intl.com
All around the country, organizations like yours are making a
positive impact, both locally and globally. By featuring Equal
Exchange at your coffee hours and table sales, you are directly
supporting a more equitable, alternative trade system and the
livelihoods of small farmers worldwide. Thank you for your hard
work and dedication to Fair Trade, year after year!
Since 1933, the Catholic Worker
Movement has protested injustice,
war, and violence of all forms, while
advocating for worker's rights, fair
wages, affordable housing and more.
"It's been over a decade since we
began ordering our coffee and
supplies from Equal Exchange. We
found your policies supporting Fair
Trade, small farms and economic
justice consistent with the values
we’ve espoused since our founding.
The majority of folks who come to
us are homeless men or people in
the shelter system. We serve Equal
Exchange coffee to both residents of
the house and soup line guests. The
men we serve claim that we have the
best coffee in town, and some join us
each morning just for the coffee!”

Tips & Ideas
Whether your sale is in its first year or its fifteenth,
these ideas can help you take it to the next level.
How much should I charge?
How should I set up?
How can I share the mission?
•
• Use our tea or chocolate bar
racks to save space and
display products.
• Display our small educational
table signs, posters or
brochures—they’re easy to read
and packed with info about Fair
Trade!
•
•
Round up to the nearest dollar
to help cover costs and make
giving change easier.
Sell multiple items at a discount
to encourage sales (for
example, $3 for one chocolate
bar and $5 for two).
If you’re raising funds for
special projects, trips or
activities mark products up
25-40%.
How should I promote?
•
•
•
4
Include an announcement in
your printed bulletin.

STORAGE Store coffee in an airtight container away from light,
heat and moisture for maximum freshness.
WATER Coffee is 99% water. Use the cleanest, freshest water available.
TEMPERATURE The perfect temperature to brew coffee is between
195˚and 205˚F. Automatic drip brewers need a capacity of at least 1,000 watts
to reach this temperature range.
GRIND Match your grind with the right brewing method:

MEDIUM GRIND:

FINE GRIND:

If your grind size is too coarse, the coffee could filter too fast resulting in a
weak flavor. If it is too fine, the coffee could become over extracted and bitter.

“
Every week, we welcome newcomers by giving them
a gift of a brownie mix made by one of our members.
We enclose a recipe with the ingredients and a list of
ingredients that need to be added. Equal Exchange semisweet chocolate chips and Equal exchange baking cocoa
are always used as two of the ingredients.
The brownies are absolutely delectable
and, at the same time, we communicate
