DEGREE CANDIDATES
College at Florham degree candidates, see page 11.
Metropolitan Campus degree candidates, see page 20.
See inside back cover for arena seating plan.
Note: An undergraduate student whose cumulative grade point ratio (CGPR) for four years is 3.85 will receive his or her
degree summa cum laude; if the CGPR is 3.67, magna cum laude; if the CGPR is 3.33, cum laude. Only weighted grades will
be included in computing honors. Only the credits taken at Fairleigh Dickinson University, a minimum of 54 credits, will be
used in this evaluation. These criteria apply to all undergraduate students entering the University as of August/September 2006.
Students enrolled prior to August/September 2006 will continue to be evaluated
under the criteria of the policy in effect when they enrolled.
Due to time constraints associated with the printing of the programs, the honors listed therein were determined
as of the end of the fall semester. The final listing for the commencement period will include those honors earned
as of the completion of the spring semester, and diplomas will reflect this achievement.
This program does not represent an official list of certified graduates.

Walter Minor Berwick IV
Malaak Compton-Rock
Doctor of Humane Letters
Doctor of Humane Letters
A 1965 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, you
have led a life most people only dream of — a life of
intrigue, espionage and selfless courage.
On your 23rd birthday, you were given a book by
Marian Wright Edelman with a simple message: “Service is the rent we pay for living.” It is a credo that
would forever change the way you looked at yourself
and the world around you.
Like a John le Carré novel complete with danger,
action and twisting plots, you coolly went about the
business of defending your nation during 25 years with
the Central Intelligence Agency. You served at the
height of the Cold War, often working behind enemy
lines. Operating clandestinely throughout the world,
you gathered information and tracked movements of
key Russians, Cubans and Chinese. You later described
the meaning you found in your work, secure in the
confidence that “you are obtaining information that
no one else can, and that you are helping to provide
policymakers with a clear picture.”
Concluding that “I’m not paying my rent,” you left a
demanding job at a high-powered Manhattan public
relations firm to pursue a life of greater meaning and
purpose. You found your true calling when you went
to work for UNICEF — The United Nations Children’s Fund — to recruit celebrities for fundraising
efforts. It was your “defining moment,” inspiring you
to dedicate your life to the nonprofit world.
After witnessing sweeping changes in welfare laws, you
combined your flair for style with your fundraising talents to found the nonprofit styleWORKS, providing
makeovers — and newfound confidence — to women
rejoining the work force after living on public assistance. “I want to give women that final touch, an
appropriate appearance that presents no barriers while
on the job,” you said.
You retired in 1990 with a rank equivalent to an Army
general, moving on to another equally important and
dangerous career — establishing your own international
security company specializing in kidnap and ransom
recoveries. When your country called upon you following 9/11, you quickly returned to government service,
training young officers in espionage and personally
taking on overseas counter-terrorist assignments.
A tireless activist and philanthropist, you recently
founded The Angelrock Project, an e-village promoting volunteerism and social responsibility, focusing
on issues close to your heart, including youth and
women’s empowerment and education. Believing that
today’s children are tomorrow’s global leaders, you created Journey for Change, taking at-risk youth from
Brooklyn to South Africa and empowering them
through global service.
Your lifelong commitment to service was evident at
an early age. After graduating from high school, you
joined the Navy where you excelled as an electronics
technician, achieving the rank of ET2 (Electronics
Technician Second Class) by age 19 — the youngest
sailor to reach that level. Four years later, you enrolled
at FDU and became a top student and athlete. You
also shifted to the Naval Reserve, training in submarines and at Officer Candidate School during the
summers. Your achievements were many: senior class
president, captain and high scorer of the basketball
team and Rhodes Scholar nominee. Most recently, you
have shared your experiences and insights with the
University’s homeland security academic program.
Through Champions for Children you have mobilized
prominent figures in entertainment, sports and business
as advocates for the prevention of child abuse. You
have also used your influence and connections to raise
money to fight breast cancer, help AIDS orphans and
provide relief to Hurricane Katrina victims. Above all,
you believe that each of us can — and must — assume
personal responsibility as agents of change and healing.
For your willingness to accept difficult and dangerous
assignments in defense of our nation and the safety of
innocent citizens, and by virtue of the authority vested
in me by the Board of Trustees of Fairleigh Dickinson
University, the faculty concurring, I hereby confer
upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters,
honoris causa, with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities thereunto attached, and cause you to be
invested with the hood appropriate to that degree.
For your enduring commitment to service and boundless compassion toward others, and by virtue of the
authority vested in me by the Board of Trustees of
Fairleigh Dickinson University, the faculty concurring,
I hereby confer upon you the degree of Doctor of
Humane Letters, honoris causa, with all the rights,
privileges and responsibilities thereunto attached, and
cause you to be invested with the hood appropriate to
that degree.

Enan Galaly
Steven R. Rothman
Doctor of Humane Letters
Doctor of Humane Letters
For the ancient Greeks, hospitality was a sacred act —
so important that it was under the protection of Zeus.
Hosts were expected to welcome strangers, offer them
protection and guide them to their next destination.
Throughout your career in the hospitality industry,
you have brought new meaning to the word, treating
not only your guests, but your employees, with respect
and dignity.
You entered the political arena with the noble dream
of making a difference in the life of the common man
— a goal that you have faithfully executed throughout
your career. For more than two decades, you have
served the people of New Jersey in the courts and in
public office as mayor, judge and statesman. You have
risen through the congressional ranks to become a
member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee and subcommittees dealing with defense, state
and foreign operations and homeland security.
Driven by a desire to see the world, you left your
native Egypt as a young man for Vienna, surviving by
selling newspapers, while living on the streets. With
10 English pounds in your pocket, you then moved to
Denmark, washing dishes in exchange for meals.
As a private-practice attorney, you won awards for your
pro bono legal service to the poor, the disabled and
the elderly. As a seven-term representative of the Garden State’s Ninth Congressional District, you have
been a strong and independent voice, championing the
environment, affordable housing and benefits for military veterans.
You believe in the power of experience because that is
what propelled you, climbing the ladder from dishwasher to hotel tycoon. With little money and no formal education, you learned the hospitality business
working many different jobs, and supplementing your
training through college classes in hotel and restaurant
studies, business and economics.
When you campaigned for re-election last fall, The
Record declared you “ethical and effective” with “a
strong reputation for integrity.” The Herald News called
you a “hard worker for the district” who has “proven
his dedication.”
Just 10 years after leaving your homeland, you took
over as managing director and board member of the
Hvide Hus Hotel chain in 1977. Five years later, you
founded Helnan International — now a leading international hotel management and development company
with luxury hotels in major cities around the globe.
Environmentalists credit your leadership as vital to
saving New Jersey’s precious Meadowlands and Hackensack River watershed from further pollution and
development. You helped secure more than $10 million
in federal funds to turn the wetlands into an environmental park. You also led the fight against aircraft
noise at Teterboro Airport, prompting The Leader
newspapers to write, “Lots of political muscle is behind
the cause, but Congressman Steve Rothman is proving
to be the MVP.”
Today, you are regarded as an international entrepreneur with a socially meaningful vision. Helnan is
known for supporting cultural affairs and educational
training programs. You have represented Denmark’s
hotel and tourism industry by serving on numerous
delegations, earning recognition as a “Knight of Dannebrog” — one of that nation’s highest honors.
You have dedicated your efforts to other critical issues,
including improvements to overcrowded local roads
and commuter rail for Bergen County. You are a
powerful voice for working families and individuals,
fighting for funds to improve the quality of education,
supporting policies to improve working conditions and
benefits, and supporting tax cuts for those who need
them most.
Fluent in four languages, you easily communicate
with various nationalities during your travels and as a
senior adviser to the International Association of University Presidents. You’ve earned international praise for
your efforts to enhance intercultural understanding
between Arab and Western peoples and Muslims and
non-Muslims.
For your tireless efforts to serve the citizens of New
Jersey with honor and compassion, and by virtue of
the authority vested in me by the Board of Trustees of
Fairleigh Dickinson University, the faculty concurring,
I hereby confer upon you the degree of Doctor of
Humane Letters, honoris causa, with all the rights,
privileges and responsibilities thereunto attached, and
cause you to be invested with the hood appropriate to
that degree.
For your enduring commitment to learning and your
support of cultural and educational initiatives worldwide, and by virtue of the authority vested in me by
the Board of Trustees of Fairleigh Dickinson University,
the faculty concurring, I hereby confer upon you the
degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa,
with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities thereunto attached, and cause you to be invested with the
hood appropriate to that degree.

Student Pinnacle Award
College at Florham
From the beginning of her freshman year, Sheryl
Gauntlett was on a mission to become involved in campus life. She succeeded, to put it mildly — winning
elections and volunteering for leadership posts in a
variety of student organizations. A communications
major enrolled in the five-year accelerated program in
media and professional communication, Gauntlett has
completed her bachelor’s degree and will receive her
master’s degree in media and professional communication next year.
In his time at Fairleigh Dickinson, David Storicks took
maximum advantage of a wide array of educational and
extracurricular opportunities on campus — student
government, study abroad, theater, academics and student journalism — and excelled at every one.
Despite being severely injured in a motorcycle accident
one year ago, he has completed an accelerated five-year
program leading to a master’s degree in teaching.
Storicks, who has a bachelor’s degree in theater arts
with a minor in history, was cast in nine FDU theater
program productions, taking a lead role in five of
them, including the hit musical “The Rocky Horror
Picture Show”; most recently, he played the role of
Sky Masterson in “Guys and Dolls.”
In her first weeks on the Metropolitan Campus, she
attended nearly every activity hosted by student life.
She quickly demonstrated her leadership skills and was
elected secretary of the Inspirational Gospel Ensemble
(IGE) and treasurer of Black Men’s Alliance in her
sophomore year. She recently served as president of
IGE, student body liaison for the Communication
Honor Society and parliamentarian and public relations
chair of the Student Government Association.
He served as president of the Student Government
Association and studied abroad at FDU’s Wroxton College in England, while student-teaching at the Wroxton
village elementary school. In addition, Storicks was a
resident assistant, vice president of student affairs for
the Resident Student Association and a writer for The
Metro student newspaper.
High academic standards and a strong work ethic
resulted in her recognition as a Col. Fairleigh S. Dickinson Scholar, Charter Day Scholar and member of
two University honor societies and Lambda Pi Eta, the
official communication studies honor society of the
National Communication Association. Gauntlett’s name
has appeared on the Dean’s List every semester of her
undergraduate career.
The Dean of Students Office presented the 2008
Burden Award for Meritorious Achievement to Storicks,
who was also a Charter Day Scholar and a Col. Fairleigh S. Dickinson Scholar. As an undergraduate, he
regularly made the Dean’s List and was named to Who’s
Who Among Students in American Universities and
Colleges.
Her study-abroad experiences, through the Global
Scholars program, have included trips to the Dominican Republic, Cyprus and Belize. During her junior
year, Gauntlett spent a semester at FDU’s Wroxton
College in England. In addition to enjoying the rigorous academic experience at Wroxton, she traveled to
France, Spain, Italy, Scotland and Wales.
Storicks, a resident of Dumont, N.J., found time to
give back to the community, serving as assistant coach
of the Dumont High School forensics team and director of Neil Simon’s “Rumors” for Summertime Players,
a program for high school students in Park Ridge, N.J.
He has volunteered his time to the University community by serving on several committees, including the
2007 Strategic Planning Committee, the Recruitment
and Retention Committee, Campus Council and the
50th Anniversary of the College at Florham Committee, among others.
A member of the University Honors Program, she
presented her senior honors thesis, “Communicating
Effectively with Body Language,” at Research Day in
April. Gauntlett, a resident of Tyngsboro, Mass., also
attended three National Collegiate Honors Council
Conferences and presented papers in Providence, R.I.;
Annapolis, Md.; and Morristown, N.J.

THE UNIVERSITY
Fairleigh Dickinson University looks back with tremendous pride to the accomplishments achieved and looks
ahead to even greater levels of excellence.
Founded in 1942 by Dr. Peter Sammartino and his
wife, Sylvia (Sally), Fairleigh Dickinson University has
grown into the largest private university in New Jersey.
More than 12,000 students from 37 states and 88 other
countries are enrolled on FDU’s two campuses in New
Jersey and its overseas campuses in Wroxton, England,
and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Beginning as a two-year junior college in Rutherford,
today the University offers more than 100 degree
programs at the associate, baccalaureate, master’s and
doctoral levels. Fairleigh Dickinson University strongly
emphasizes an international component in its curriculum and provides its students with a global and multicultural perspective.
The University has consistently been an innovator,
adapting to the changing educational demands of the
students it serves. Responding to the need for higher
education in northern New Jersey, the college expanded
to a four-year curricula in 1948.
In 1954, the first graduate program — a master’s degree
in business administration — was offered, and Bergen
Junior College in Teaneck was purchased as a second
campus. In 1956, Fairleigh Dickinson attained university
status. One year later, the beautiful 178-acre VanderbiltTwombly estate in Florham Park and Madison, New
Jersey, was acquired to serve as another campus.
FDU became the first American university to own a
campus in England when it acquired Wroxton College
from Trinity College, Oxford University. Opened in
1965, Wroxton College offers American students an
array of graduate and undergraduate programs as well
as an enriching cultural experience. Formerly a 13thcentury abbey, Wroxton College is now a beautifully
restored and modernized Jacobean mansion.
Established in 1998, the Anthony J. Petrocelli College
of Continuing Studies addresses the special educational needs of nontraditional students, including adult
learners.
Over the years Fairleigh Dickinson University has
maintained its commitment to broadening global horizons and fostering greater international understanding. In 2000, the Board of Trustees adopted a newly
focused mission for FDU: to prepare students for
world citizenship through global education.
In addition to Wroxton College, the University opened
its second international campus in Vancouver, British
Columbia, Canada, in fall 2007.
Each of the University campuses has developed a
unique character and vitality. The Metropolitan Campus, located in Teaneck, features a university atmosphere with an international perspective attracting nearly
equal numbers of graduate and undergraduate students

from throughout the United States and around the
world. Fairleigh Dickinson’s College at Florham in suburban Madison offers a classical undergraduate and
graduate experience for the contemporary world in a
small college setting.
not until a century later that a widespread student movement resulted in the formal use of the attire at commencement ceremonies. Faculty members readily accepted the
return to a dignified and traditional dress for graduations
and soon extended the custom to other formal academic
functions. By 1895, a uniform code for academic dress had
been adopted in the United States, and although no formal
worldwide standards have ever existed, certain basic and traditional elements are evident in most academic attire.
With the depth and breadth of its faculty and programs, Fairleigh Dickinson University has positioned
itself as a quality, comprehensive private university
serving global citizens throughout the world.
The Gowns
CLASS OF 1959
Participants in academic ceremonies are expected to
wear the regalia to which they are entitled by virtue of
the highest degree they hold.
The Fairleigh Dickinson University community is pleased
to acknowledge and congratulate members of the class of
1959 as they celebrate a milestone this year — the 50th
anniversary of their graduation. FDU’s first graduating
class, the class of 1944, also is congratulated as the members celebrate the 65th anniversary of their graduation.
Gowns worn by those with bachelor’s degrees are distinguished by a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, intricate
shirring across the shoulders and back and long pointed
sleeves open at the wrists. The gown must be worn closed.
TRADITIONALLY...
Master’s degree holders wear a similar gown of either
silk or wool with the same yoke effect as the bachelor’s
degree robe. The master’s gown may be worn either
open or closed in the front. Other variations in the
master’s degree gown include oblong and square cut
sleeves closed at the wrists and an arc-like section of
material in the front of the garment.
Traditions link the present to the past and the future.
In addition to the academic customs exhibited in the
Commencement ceremony, Fairleigh Dickinson University has several unique traditions on display today.
At Fairleigh Dickinson, the academic processional
includes the bagpipers, a practice dating back to the
University’s eighth commencement in 1951. Since then,
it has become a tradition at graduation and other ceremonies for the pipers to play.
The doctor’s gown, also worn either open or closed,
is usually made of silk and velvet with full and round
sleeves open at the wrists. These gowns are distinguished
by long velvet panels down the front of the gown and
three horizontal velvet sleeve bars, which may be either
black or the color distinctive of the academic discipline in
which the individual holds the doctoral degree. Although
the color of these gowns is traditionally black, some institutions have adopted robes in their school colors.
Other traditions recognize Fairleigh Dickinson University’s global and multicultural background. International
flags have become a part of many ceremonies and
events. Whenever a spiritual thought is appropriate, a
diversity of views is presented. In addition to the singing
of the “Alma Mater,” the University has returned to a
tradition established by its founder, Peter Sammartino,
of having all join in the singing of the time-honored
“Auld Lang Syne.”
The Caps
The most familiar item of academic regalia is the
Oxford or mortarboard cap with its distinctive tassel.
Explanations of its origin include suggestions that its
shape was inspired by the quadrangular Oxford campus
or by the actual master workman’s mortarboard. Perhaps a more plausible theory is that it was designed
flat and about the size of a scholar’s book for ease in
carrying. Material for most caps varies from serge and
broadcloth to rayon and silk, although caps worn by
doctoral degree recipients may be of velvet.
THE ACADEMIC COSTUME
The academic regalia worn by University officials and
faculty at today’s commencement ceremony are infrequently seen outside of formal academic occasions. The
gowns, caps and hoods once were the regular apparel
of European university students and faculty during the
Middle Ages. At that time, both faculty and students
were considered part of the clergy and were required to
don the ecclesiastical dress, roba and caputum, patterned
after the habit of the Benedictine Order. The regalia
also served a practical purpose, providing warmth in the
unheated stone buildings of most medieval universities.
The most distinctive feature of the cap is the tassel,
which is positioned to hang from the left front quadrant of the cap. The tassel is black for bachelor’s and
master’s degree holders, but gold for Ph.D.’s and the
primary governing officials of an institution. While the
mortarboard cap is used by the vast majority of institutions around the world, some schools have adopted a
soft, square-topped cap, but still retain the tassel.
In the United States, caps and gowns had been in limited
use by colleges and universities since Colonial times. It was
9
in the United States and was purchased for the University from Seymour B. Wyler, author of The Book of
Sheffield Plate and The Book of Old Silver.
The Hoods
The most distinctive feature of academic attire, the
hood lends color and definition to academic ceremonies.
Once used as a head covering, a shoulder cape and even
a receptacle for collecting alms in medieval times, the
hood is now a purely ceremonial black shell of varying
sizes and colored borders suspended from the shoulders
and worn down the back.
The significance of academic hoods is symbolized in their
varying lengths and the colors and thicknesses of their
velvet linings and trim. The bachelor’s hood, for example,
is three feet long with a two-inch-wide velvet border.
Master’s degree recipients wear a hood three-and-a-half
feet long with a three-inch border. Doctoral hoods are
four feet long and have a five-inch-wide border.
More distinctive, however, are the colors of the hoods’
inner linings and outer trim. The colors of the inner
lining correspond to the colors of the institution conferring the degree, while the colors of the border designate
the academic discipline in which the degree was granted. A representative listing includes:
A very rare example of 18th-century Sheffield plate, it
was made in 1765 for the Riddell family and bears its
crest. A member of that family was an English representative to the Holland town of Duysberg.
THE PRESIDENT’S MEDALLION
Along with the traditional academic regalia and trappings common to colleges and universities throughout
the United States, most institutions also possess some
unique or distinctive symbol of the presidential office
that is conveyed through succeeding administrations.
Fairleigh Dickinson University commissioned the design
and crafting of a President’s Medallion for the inauguration of Robert H. Donaldson on March 29, 1985.
The President’s Medallion is in the form of a hexagonal
shield, a variation of the University “Shield of Arms.”
In the center of the Medallion is the gold-plated coat
of arms. The motto, Fortiter et Suaviter (Bravely and Pleasurably), is engraved above the shield, and around it are
engraved the words “Fairleigh Dickinson University 1942.”
The gold-plated frame of the Medallion is surmounted by
a crest consisting of buildings symbolizing the campuses.

Medallion.
ALMA MATER
Goodhart-Davis
Praise to thee, O Alma Mater, faithfully we sing,
Hear our joyful voices ringing, Fairleigh Dickinson.
Campus halls, that oft recall us, memories will bring,
Campus lights will ever guide us, when the day is done.
Chorus
Alma Mater, we will cherish each day of the years,
We were privileged to spend here, tho’ our parting nears.
AULD LANG SYNE
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
THE MACE
The mace, a traditional symbol of authority, is carried
in the academic procession by the grand marshal. The
Fairleigh Dickinson University mace was presented to
the University in 1957 by Mr. and Mrs. Leo Pollak of
New York City. It is one of only three maces of its type
