1. Mahlon A. Miller Science Center
Built in 1973, the Science Center was named for Dr. Mahlon Miller, fourteenth
president of Union from 1959 to 1982.
2. Baldwin Place
Built in 1925, this building is home to the President. The building was made
possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Baldwin of Elmira, N.Y.
3. Sharp Academic Center
Opened in August 2000, this new building is named for two distinguished
alumni, Dr. Phillip A. Sharp ’66 and his wife, Ann ’66.
3a. Stevenson Residence Hall
The C-wing of the original Stevenson Hall, added in 1957, remains today as
a freshmen men’s residence hall.
4. Soldiers and Sailors Intramural Center
Built in 1919, this building was built as a memorial to the soldiers and sailors
of Knox County. Some may remember it as the Dramatic Arts Center (DAC).
Remodeled in 1965 and 1990, it served as an intramural center until 2001.
Now the building is closed.
5. Spiritual Life/Experiential Learning Center
Originally known as the maintenance building, it was built in 1938 and
equipped by a gift from the estate of Robert Norton of New Albany, Ind.
The first floor serves as an office for the College Minister and campus religious
organizations; Experiential learning is on the second floor.
6. Centennial Hall
Formerly known as the Classroom Building, this hall was built in 1907. The
three-level building was the home of Union’s dining hall for 83 years. It
currently serves as classroom space for the departments of Business, English,
and the Special Programs Office.
7. Weeks Memorial Library & Townsend Annex
Opened in 1941, the library is named for Abigail Weeks, a professor at Union
for nearly 30 years. The addition to the library opened in the fall of 1987 and
was named after Milton Townsend, a 1948 graduate of Union. He returned
to Union in 1951 as director of public relations and alumni affairs, later
serving as vice president for college relations and development.
8. Speed Hall
Named for Fanny Speed, the building was first occupied in the 1905-06
school year and is the oldest building on campus. Renovated in 2000, it
houses the offices of Admission, Advancement, Business Affairs, Financial
Aid, and the Registrar.
9. Pfeiffer Residence Hall
Currently serving as the residence hall for first-year students, the building
was constructed in 1942 with a new wing added in 1960. The original wing
was a gift from the estate of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pfeiffer of New York City.
10. Edward H. Black Technology Center
Scheduled to open in January 2003, the new tech center connects to the
library via a second-floor glassed-in bridge. It will house computer and training
labs, an audio/video studio, a College-operated cable channel and Information
Services offices.
11. Conway Boatman Chapel and Fine Arts Building
Built in 1949, this is home to the Department of Music and Fine Arts. The
chapel was named for Conway Boatman, president from 1938 to 1954. In
March 1991, a new organ was installed. Rector Little Theatre, a 115-seat
theatre, is located at the rear of this building
12. John M. Robsion Jr. Memorial Arena
Built in 1964, this building is home to the Department of Health and Physical
Education. The gymnasium and swimming pool are also located in this building.
13. Weight Training Facility
Located behind the gym, you’ll find athletic teams, students, faculty and
staff working out in the College weight room.
14. Patridge Campus Center and Minton Cafeteria
The Campus Center was built in 1964 and renovated in 1991. It is named for
Dr. Frances Patridge, long-time professor and administrator for 44 years.
Minton Cafeteria was constructed in 1991 and named for the late Myrtle
Cole Minton, a 1912 graduate of the Union College Academy.
15/16. College Courts
In 1954, residences for Union College married students were added to the
campus. This addition was expanded in 1964. Today, there are residential
students as well as faculty and staff members living in College Courts.
17. Lakeside Athletic Complex
Originally built in 1963 as a bowling center, it housed the Department of
Social and Behavioral Sciences until August 2000. It is now home to the
Department of Athletics.
18. Lakeside Residence Hall
This men’s residence hall was ready for occupancy in 1964.
19. Stewart Lyttle Apartments
Constructed in 1999, theses eight apartment-style suites can accommodate
48 upperclass students. Each of the eight apartments houses six students in
individual sleeping rooms. Each apartment features a washer/dryer, a fullyequipped kitchen and a balcony or patio.
