TASK DETAILS
1.
Description of the Task
In exam conditions, you are asked to:
Discuss who you believe is the true villain in the play “Macbeth”
In your discussion essay you should include:
-
the time, setting and background information (context) of the text
-
the use of characters and characterisation
-
dramatic tools such as dialogue, soliloquies, monologue, foreshadowing etc.
-
language techniques to engage the audience e.g. metaphor, imagery, hyperbole etc.
On the day of the Task you will:
 have 50 minutes to complete your response to the above question
 be allowed to use the attached ONE A4 page containing TEN Quotations only
 be supplied with paper
 complete a self-assessment of your essay on the marking criteria sheet attached
 submit your essay, quotation sheet and self-assessment at the end of the lesson
Glossary of terms:
Language Techniques: poetic devices found in the characters’ dialogue e.g. imagery, metaphor, simile etc.
Villain: a character who causes problems and/or conflict. He/she could be criminal, infamous, evil or immoral
Context: The influence of the background and circumstances in which a text was written
Discussion : an essay that identifies issues and presents both sides of an argument
Dramatic Tool: Techniques used in drama to engage the audience. These may include lighting, staging, costume and
stage direction. For Shakespeare’s plays it also includes techniques such as asides, monologue, soliloquy, foreshadowing
etc.
Essay: A written response that includes an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. A thesis in response to the
statement should be evident throughout and textual evident must be used to support the writer’s thoughts
Student Preparation Checklist:

□ Identify the villainous characters in the play and make notes on their evil/immoral actions/desires
□ Consider the themes that Shakespeare is communicating through the villainous characters and conflict
□ Locate significant and relevant quotes to support your discussion

□ Draft essay response to the question using the attached scaffold
