WELCOME TO CHRIST THE KING
CtK exists to live, speak, and serve as the very presence of Jesus Christ in Downtown Raleigh.
By God’s grace, we increasingly:
Delight in Jesus in worship,
Discover Jesus in community,
Display Jesus’ Kingdom in our lives,
to the end of making disciples
and multiplying Churches,
starting in downtown Raleigh
Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here and we hope to
remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to CtK.
Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the
service. Unless otherwise noted, we stand for the songs and sit at other times.
Here are a few options for your children. Childcare is provided during the service for children up to
three. Children ages three through nine are given the choice of attending a children’s teaching time
mid-way through the service (dismissal is before the sermon). Your child is welcome to come forward
for communion and will receive a blessing from the leadership if they aren’t members of this or another
church.
What we hope you get out of this service. Our service is designed to be accessible to you, whether
you’ve spent your life in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the
service, we will try to help you understand how the ancient story of Jesus can have application to and
meaning in your life today.
To connect with our church further, speak with Geoff Bradford or one of our Elder leaders. They
can direct you towards a Community Group and the membership process. You can also leave your
email at the back table or contact us at [email protected].

REFLECTIONS
“God is the only one we can surrender to without losing ourselves. It’s a paradox. I am increasingly convinced that all true spirituality has the character of paradox to it, precisely because it is always holding
together the whole of reality, which is always “Both/And.” Everything except God is both attractive and
non-attractive, light and darkness, passing and eternal, life and death. There are really no exceptions.”
-- Richard Rohr
“To submit to the Father of our spirit denotes] an acquiescence in His sovereign right to do what He will
with us as His own; a renunciation of self-will; an acknowledgement of His righteousness and wisdom in
all His dealings with us; a sense of His care and love, with a due apprehension of the end of His chastisements; a diligent application of ourselves unto His mind and will, or to what He calls us to in an especial
manner at that season; a keeping of our souls by persevering faith from weariness and despondency; a
full resignation of ourselves to His will, as to the matter, manner, times and continuance of our afflictions.”
-- John Owen
CALL TO WORSHIP
(God reveals Himself through His Word and calls us to worship Him)
From Psalm 29
Leader: People:
Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.
Leader:
People:
The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
May the LORD give strength to his people!
May the LORD bless his people with peace!
PRAYER OF ADORATION (so we marvel in Him and His character, asking Him to be with us,)
SONGS OF PRAISE
(and we sing in praise of His worth and works.)
Praise to the Lord!
Praise to the Lord,
The Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;
Praise Him in glad adoration.
Praise to the Lord,
Who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, Yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?
Praise to the Lord,
Who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
If with His love He befriend thee.
Praise to the Lord,
O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath,
Come now with praises before Him.
Let the Amen sound from His people again,
Gladly for aye we adore Him.

Pensive, Doubting, Fearful Heart
Pensive, doubting, fearful heart, hear what Christ the Savior says;
Every word should joy impart, change thy mourning into praise.
Yes, He speaks and speaks to thee, may He help thee to believe;
Then thou presently will see thou has little cause to grieve.
Fear thou not, nor be ashamed; all thy sorrows soon shall end,
I, who heaven and earth have framed, am thy Husband and thy Friend;
I the High and Holy One, Israel’s God, by all adored,
As thy Savior will be known, thy Redeemer and thy Lord.
For a moment I withdrew, and thy heart was filled with pain;
But my mercies I’ll renew; thou shall soon rejoice again;
Though I seem to hide my face, very soon my wrath shall cease;
‘Tis but for a moment’s space, ending in eternal peace.
Though afflicted, tempest tossed, comfortless awhile thou art,
Do not think thou can be lost, thou art graven on my heart;
All thy wastes I will repair; thou shalt be rebuilt anew;
And in thee it shall appear what the God of love can do.

CALL TO CONFESSION
(He shows us our sinfulness opposed to His holiness,
but He reminds us of His mercy promised to us,)
Leader:
The psalmist testifies: Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what He has done for me. If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened;
He has given heed to the words of my prayer.
Blessed be God, because He has not rejected my prayer or removed His steadfast love from me.
In the strength of this assurance, let us confess our sins to God.
CONFESSION OF SIN
(so we are able to freely confess our sins.)
Leader:
Almighty and Merciful Father, you have told us what is good,
and we agree with you.
People:
Our lives, however, do not represent those of a people that bear
your image.
Leader:
We have not acted justly.
People:
Instead, we have acted in ways that promote our own comfort and
advancement.
Leader:
People:
We have not loved mercy.
Instead, we have loved the order and control over our lives we can maintain if we do not reach out to those in need.
Leader:
People:
We have not walked humbly with You.
Instead, we have run from your paths when they are difficult and
involve sacrifice. Forgive us for our offenses against you, and go on to subdue everything in us which is contrary to your purposes. By the power of your Spirit make us a community which acts justly, loves mercy and walks humbly with you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
silent time of confession
ASSURANCE OF THE GOSPEL
(He assures us of His grace shown to us in Christ,)
From Romans 5
Leader: 8 But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
SONGS OF THANKSGIVING
(so we sing in thanks for the hope we have in Jesus.)
Jesus What a Friend for Sinners
Jesus! what a friend for sinners!
Jesus! lover of my soul;
Friends may fail me, foes assail me,
He, my Savior, makes me whole.
Chorus
Hallelujah! What a Savior! Hallelujah! What a friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving, He is with me to the end.
Jesus! what a strength in weakness!
Let me hide myself in him;
Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing,
He, my strength, my vict’ry wins.
Chorus
Jesus! what a help in sorrow!
While the billows o’er me roll,
Even when my heart is breaking,
He, my comfort, helps my soul.
Chorus
Jesus! I do now receive him!
More than all in him I find;
He hath granted me forgiveness,
I am his, and he is mine.
Chorus

Words by Wilbur Chapman, Music by Rowland Pritchard
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love.
Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand’ring from the fold of God:
He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be;
Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wand’ring heart to thee.
Prone to wander—Lord, I feel it –prone to leave the God I love:
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.
O that day when freed from sinning, I shall see Thy lovely face;
Clothed then in blood washed linen how I’ll sing Thy sovereign grace;
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry, take my ransomed soul away;
Send thine angels now to carry me to realms of endless day.

GOSPEL HOSPITALITY
(We extend the welcome and grace of Jesus to each other.)
Leader: People: The peace of Christ be with you all.
And also with you.
SCRIPTURE READING
Children’s Teaching Time
Parents - please lead your
children to the back entrance.
The teachers will escort them
across the street.
(We listen to His Word...)
Mark 11:27 - 12:17
27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple,
the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, 28 and they said
to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this
authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question;
answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was
the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.” 31 And they
discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say,
‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘From man’?”—they
were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet. 33
So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither
will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
12
And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard
and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower,
and leased it to tenants and went into another country. 2 When the season
came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of
the vineyard. 3 And they took him and beat him and sent him away emptyhanded. 4 Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the
head and treated him shamefully. 5 And he sent another, and him they killed.
And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed. 6 He had
still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will
respect my son.’ 7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 And they took him
and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What will the owner of the
vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to
others.
10 Have you not read this Scripture:
“‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
11 this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
12 And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they
perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went
away.
13 And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to
trap him in his talk. 14 And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that
you are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For you are not swayed
by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to
Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” 15 But, knowing
their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius
and let me look at it.” 16 And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose
likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” 17 Jesus said to
them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things
that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.

THE LORD’S SUPPER
(God confirms His promises to strenghten and sustain us as we
await the return of His Son.)
The Lord’s Supper, which is often called Communion or the Eucharist, is celebrated every Sunday at
CtK. The Lord’s Supper is the family meal of Christians. Christ the King Presbyterian Church welcomes
all committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament. If you have forsaken your sin
and trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation, are a baptized member of a congregation that proclaims the
gospel, and seek strength to live more faithfully for Christ, we invite you to partake in the Lord’s Supper
with us. If you are not a Christian or are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend
this time in prayer, using one of the prayers listed below. We hope this time is helpful to you as you
consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with His people, the Church.
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
Minister: People: Minister: People: Minister: People: The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts!
We lift them up unto the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
The Communion
We will come forward to receive
communion. Please eat the bread as
you receive it; you can drink the cup
when you recieve it or take it back to
your seat. Please use this time to pray
for the Lord’s return, to meditate silently
on one of the printed prayer, or to sing
along with our communion hymn.
Note for cups:
clear cup-wine, tinted cup-juice
Words of Institution
Minister: People:
With these words our Lord commands all believers to eat this broken bread and to drink this cup in true faith and in the confident hope of his return in glory.
In this supper, God declares to us that our sins have been completely forgiven through the one sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which He Himself finished on the cross once and for all. He also declares to us that the Holy Spirit grafts us into Christ, who with His very body is now in heaven at the right hand of the Father, where He wants us to worship Him.
Minister:
People: Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Leader: People: Great is the mystery of our Faith
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
Leader: People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus
Dying, you destroyed our death; Rising, you restored our life.
Lord Jesus, come in glory.
Jesus Paid it All
I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small
Child of weakness watch and pray
Find in me thine all in all.”
Chorus
Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe,
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.
Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and thine alone,
Can cleanse the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone.
Chorus
Since nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim,
I’ll wash my garment white
In the blood of Calvary’s Lamb.
Chorus
And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
“Jesus died my soul to save”
My lips shall still repeat.
Chorus

PRAYERS FOR
COMMUNION
Prayer for Those
Searching for Truth
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth,
and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by
the cost of following you as I consider the reasons
for doing so. If what you claim is true, please
guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality
of who you are. Give me an understanding of you
that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the
life that you promise. Amen.
Prayer of Belief
Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more
sinful than I ever before believed, but through you
I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared
hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my
punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness
and new life. Knowing that you have been raised
from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you
as Savior and Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Commitment
Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in
baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in
your church. Grant that I may take the necessary
steps to be one with your people, and live in the
fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
DOXOLOGY
(We thank Him for His provision...)
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost;
Amen
SONG OF SENDING | OFFERING
(and respond by cheerfully giving to Him and singing in praise.)
Hallelujah, What a Savior
“Man of Sorrows!” what a name for the Son of God, who came.
Ruined sinners to reclaim! Hallelujah, What a Savior!
Bearing shame and scoffing rude, in my place condemned he stood,
Sealed my pardon, with His blood: Hallelujah, What a Savior!
Guilty, lost and helpless we, spotless Lamb of God was He;
Full atonement! Can it be? Hallelujah, What a Savior!
Lifted up was He to die, “It is finished,” was His cry;
Now in heav’n exalted high: Hallelujah, What a Savior!
When he comes, our glorious King, all His ransomed home to bring,
Then anew this song we’ll sing: Hallelujah, What a Savior!
