There are also many different opinions about homelessness and why people are homeless. I have spent most of my years in ministry trying to change some of the negative views people have on this subject. The most prevailing view is that most of the homeless are too lazy to work and are looking for a handout. It is true that there may be a few who fit this negative image, however, most people facing homelessness are doing all that they can to better themselves. People we see every day here at the Mission are looking for jobs and saving their money for their own place. Some are unable to work and have applied for government assistance, but this takes time. Here is the truth of the matter, no one should be homeless or helpless, and if people need help then we should offer it to them with Christian care and compassion. No one should be defined or stereotyped because they are homeless. The City Mission is here to offer a “hand up” for those who are down in life’s situation and hurting because of being temporally unemployed. We give homeless people the hope that there is an end to their desperate situation. In Christian Service, Daniel Hicks Executive Director OUR JOB BOARD A wonderful resource, available to all who come to the Mission, is our Day Center Job Board. At any given time there are 16 to 20 current jobs listed on our Board with pull-off tabs, so guests can take the information with them. The Board is updated as often as possible, sometimes daily, with the most recent job postings from the Courier, JobSolutions, and many online job-search websites. The Day Center has experienced very positive results with this method. Guests are able to find the most up-to-date job openings and use the Day Center computers and phone to pursue these job opportunities. Since the Day Center started operation last December, 61 men and 14 women from the Mission have found work. On the left Clara Harrod - Day Center Coordinator and right Morgan Podach - U of F Occupational Therapy Student ANOTHER PROGRAM GRADUATE Transformation is a key word for our New Life Directions Program. It comes from Romans 12:1-2 which talks about the transformation that comes from a renewal of our mind. Frank Wooden on the left and John Seng - Board President on the right. Frank always called me Pastor Harris out of respect. But I believe the way he addressed me showed in Frank a humble spirit and teachable heart. Frank’s wife is deceased and they have a fourteen year old daughter. Frank has moved back home to be the dad that God has called him to be. Please pray for Frank as he steps out in his “new life direction.” GOLFING FOR A CAUSE On July 20th, Hitchings Insurance Company and Northwest Ohio Orthopedics and Sports Medicine sponsored a golf outing to raise funds for City Mission’s Capital Campaign. There was a great turnout. As a result we were presented with a check for $7,130.41. Charity events such as these are not only great fundraisers, they also help charities get their message out to the community. The City Mission Board and Staff would like to thank all the companies and individuals who took part in the golf outing, and especially the sponsors. Starting from the left - Phil Arnold Mission Treasurer, Dan Hicks Executive Director, from Hitchings Andy Noel and Ryan Pessell CSX DONATION We would like to thank the CSX Corporate Citizenship for their donation of $2500 to the City Mission Capital Campaign! Peter Craig is shown presenting the check to Dewey Harris, Mission Director. Thank you for helping the homeless and hungry in the community! BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU RATES CITY MISSION Did you notice the new logo on our front page? The Better Business Bureau has reviewed City Mission’s services, finances, and fundraising methods based on their 20 Standards for Charitable Accountability and given us an A+ rating. Last year the Mission spent 77.7% of its budget on programming (BBB recommends at least 65%) and 12.8% on fundraising. The Mission’s information will be included in the BBB’s 2012 Wise Giving Guide. COLD WEATHER COMETH! When the thermometer begins to dip into the 30’s, we at the City Mission open the doors a little wider. Those who are truly in need, those who truly have no place to go, can find a bed at night at the Mission during life-threatening weather. Lengths of stay are relaxed. Dorms get a little more crowded and mattresses can be found in the chapel overnight. If all the space is full, there are seats in the dining room where those without a bed can at least be in out of the cold. All of these efforts can help get people off the streets and into safe surroundings until winter is over. BIKE REPAIR SHOP The Program House at 509 W. Front Street has seen a lot of activity as a group from Gateway Church worked to turn its unheated garage into a bicycle repair shop. Gateway’s crew put in a lot of hours insulating and renovating the structure. Our thanks to Gateway for their hard work in providing the program men with a place where they can learn the skill of repairing bicycles.
