With a nice mix of some new and classic events we had some great participation. Thanks to everyone that participated and volunteered to make the events happen. In the Best Theme Jump contest, Raina Christou and Nicole Bradfield earned first place, Cory Priebe and Riley Cartier took second and Sean La Rose and Jamo earned third place honours. Raina and Nicole’s very cool video can be seen on the Edmonton Skydive YouTube channel. Subscribe to the Edmonton Skydive YouTube channel and watch the video here. Photo: Nicole Bradfield Swoop & Keg Stand Results IN PICTURES One of Edmonton Skydive’s favourite event is the Swoop & Keg Stand. It’s the ultimate test of both skydiving and after hours skills. On the last load of the day, we set up a keg as an accuracy target. The skydiver must fly their canopy as close to the keg as possible with the timer starting as soon as their feet touch the ground and stopping once they reach the keg. At that time, the jumper must do an assisted headstand on the keg and drink for as long as they can. Time on the keg is subtracted from time to the keg. As one of Edmonton Skydive’s most popular events, we had great participation. Congratulations to the overall winner, Corey Arsenault. Best accuracy went to Joey Allen with a time to the keg of 6.55 seconds. The longest time on the keg went to Corey with a time of 20.5 seconds. Official Results! 1st! Corey Arsenault! 2nd! Sean and Massy got 19 points in the 35 seconds of working time. The competition draw was side body, compressed, cat, cat, open right and open left. Second place went to Al Christou and Kevin Gosselin who scored 18 points. According to Al, “we |eft a cloud of liquid dust as we exited the airplane.” While that’s nice, we all should remind Al that he still didn’t win. Third place went to Nicole Bradfield and Troy Murray. They scored 16 in time. Send Us Your Story or Idea! We divided the pack job into three stages and turned a regular pack job into a fastest, team relay competition. It turned out to be a highly strategic relay with the most successful team placing the right people at the right stage. Thanks to everyone who participated and made it a truly competitive environment. Congratulations to Rob Murray, Rob MacIntosh and Lanny who get the distinct honour of bragging rights for the year. A first for Alympics, we themed one night’s activities around a big gigantic inflatable dual bungee run. And since the folks at Edmonton Skydive seem to love competition so much, we also turned this into a competition. Participants were divided into two teams. Each competitor had four head to head runs against a competitor from the opposing team. The first competitor to dunk the helmet (we had to get resourceful) scored a point for their team. Halfway through we switch sides to ensure that no team had an unfair competitive advantage. Team Al took on Team Raina in the head to head event. While Round II was a dead even, Team Al dominated in Round I and took the overall competition by a score of 28-16. A Final Note on Alympics Due to weather and timing, we were unable to complete some of the events. Next year, look forward to the Slip & Slide Zone Accuracy as well as a couple of new ones. If you have any ideas or new events, jumping or after hours related, please email Joey at [email protected]. Cory and Kelsey battled it out! We saw a couple of our staff leave earlier this month and we wanted to wish them well on their next adventures in life. Terry Walker heads off to South East Asia to explore all of the finest it has to offer. We’d tell Terry to be on his best behaviour but given that it’s relative, it’s kind of a moot point. Also, best of luck to Laura Davis, who manifested for us in the summer. She’s returned home to beautiful Melbourne. At this time of year, we’re all a little jealous. Best of luck kids! Edmonton Skydive News [Page 5] CANOPY COURSE Edmonton Skydive is planning a Brian Germain canopy course for the Spring of 2013. If you are interested please visit manifest or email [email protected] Coaches Corner As skydivers, we’re very aware of the value and importance of remaining current. Currency keeps our mental awareness heighten, reduces fear and stress and physically, it helps us build muscle memory. However, we are all somewhat bound by our own geography. Many skydivers in Canada are forced into a significant period of un-currency when winter rolls around. So what can we do to retain and build our piloting skills over the winter? Winter is a perfect time to increase your technical knowledge about the principles of flight. There are many amazing resources available today. Read articles, books and videos about canopy design and canopy flight. The Parachute and its Pilot is an excellent and comprehensive resource. Brian Germain is a legend in the skydiving community. He is a canopy designer, author, speaker and owner of Big Air Sportz. Dig out some of your videos from the previous season and critique your patterns and landings. Watch videos of highly experienced canopy pilots. Even watching video will keep your brain engaged and reduce your level of un-currency. In his 25 years in the sport, Brian has won a gold medal at the X-Games, patented the Airlock technology, designed the Jedei, Samurai and Sensei parachutes, written four books and has done more than 15,000 skydives. His book, The Parachute and its Pilot, has become the definitive book on parachute aerodynamics and safety. In addition, he has become the foremost expert in the skydiving community on fear and adrenaline management. Available at Manifest! Edmonton Skydive News [Page 6] Prepare flight plans. We dive plan for freefall but do we all have the discipline to prepare a canopy flight plan on every skydive? Take the time to practice preparing a few with different wind conditions and at different DZs. It will start to become a part of your new routine. Get your hands on your gear. Hang your canopy up, look and measure the trim, inspect the lines and the entire parachute. You may discover some damage that occurred over the season or found something that could use some preventive maintenance. Not only will you learn something about it in the process you’ll feel better because you touched your gear. :) When the days start to get a little longer and warmer, start thinking about taking a canopy control course. Taking a canopy course early in the spring, will enable you to get your skill level up as soon as possible and in the most efficient manner. And finally, spend the first few jumps of the season dedicated toward canopy flight. Prepare your drills, open high and spend the entire skydive focused on getting yourself reacquainted with the skills that may help save your life, or that of your fellow skydivers, someday. 3, 2, 1, SEE YA ! Just before exit......... “I know the whole world is watching right now and I wish the world could see what I can see. Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you really are.” Felix Baumgartner New Skydiving World Records! Congratulations to Felix Baumgartner and the entire Red Bull Stratos project team for breaking three new world records. On October 14th, Felix exited his space capsule at an altitude of 128,100 feet. Felix now owns the world record for highest skydive (128,100 feet), fastest human flight (833.9 mph) without motorized assistance and highest manned balloon flight (128,176 feet). Felix used a specially designed pressurized suit. The suit carried equipment that captured valuable medical and scientific data that will be used for the advancement of human flight. Space suits will now likely be rated up to 120,000 feet, an additional 20%. With the advancement of space tourism travel this may prove to be an important discovery. DETAILS ON THE NEW RECORDS From a medical perspective, Felix’s jump demonstrated that the human body can handle immense speed changes. Felix is the only human being to have traveled from subsonic to supersonic and back to subsonic speed. In addition to the scientific advancements, this has been a great story for the skydiving industry. It received a significant amount of media attention over the past couple of weeks. An estimated 8 million people streamed the live feed from YouTube and another 4 million directly from the Red Bull Stratos website. You can relive Felix’s epic skydive from the edge of space and learn about the skydiving and aeronautical technology by visiting the Red Bull Stratos Project website. In the midst of this, you sometimes take for granted how unique you’re fellow skydivers are and how lucky we are to live the lifestyle we do. And then, you meet someone that puts that all in perspective. The Beer Box is a regular feature, recognizing significant skydiving achievements, and serves as a reminder for those individuals to go buy beer! In September, Edmonton Skydive got the privilege to introduce Dausen Kluin to the world of skydiving. Dausen was born with cerebral palsy and has limited mobility on the left side of his body. And yet, Dausen has achieved more than most people in life before the age of 20. Dausen is a motivational speaker and world champion arm wrestler. By rocking out a 13,000 foot tandem skydive out of the Navajo with Jamo, he now also joins an exclusive club of people that have skydived. Check out Dausen on Alberta Primetime.
