Psychic Awakening No. 6
CONCURRENCE
As this week’s lesson is devoted in part to the study of the thyroid gland, we
will provide you with an appropriate selection taken from Ces glandes qui nous
gouvernent (The Glands Which Govern Us), a work that is justifiably described
by its author as a “short treatise on endocrino-psychology.”
There is no vital phenomenon where the effects of the thyroid cannot
be found. The thyroid presides over all relational life, over all physical and
intellectual life. It gives rise to our needs and aspirations while it maintains
and protects life. It is a gland whose activities are quite difficult to
understand. Our analytical mind does not allow us to penetrate its secrets.
Moreover, it introduces another shortcoming: it has exactly the same
possibilities as the autonomic and central nervous systems, with the result
that physiologists and physicians most willingly attribute the qualities
and flaws of the thyroid to the nervous system. Moreover, it seems easier
to provide an explanation regarding the hypothalamus and sympathetic
system. Nonetheless, it is not the glands which need the nervous system
to function, but the nervous system which needs the thyroid to develop,
function, and perform even the least of its activities. We have proof of
this in Roesch’s Human-Plant, which was born without a thyroid and had
neither a relational life nor a functional nervous system.
With the investigative means at our disposal, we do not understand
why the power exercised by the thyroid gland over our personalities has
not been recognized. In reality, it is extremely difficult to realize how
the thyroid functions in a laboratory. Its activity is most mysterious. It
affects the metabolism and the functioning of the individual’s autonomic
organs much less than his or her general activities. These activities cannot
be traced in the laboratory because they are extremely complicated and
always require the intervention of many systems and even the whole
personality at once. Sometimes the thyroid secretion comes only after
much delay, appearing to be stored by the cells. At other times its action
is sudden, fierce, immediate, and quite powerful, as in the hot flashes of
menopause. Finally, its effects can be dissipated so rapidly that a subject
can lose consciousness or be transfixed by an emotion. That it why it is
practically impossible to observe the activity of the thyroid in a laboratory.

Dear Fratres and Sorores,
If you have performed the previous experiments involving psychic
awakening on a regular basis, you will undoubtedly have developed the
corresponding centers, even if only partially. We shall therefore continue with
the thyroid center and see why it deserves our attention.
THE THYROID GLAND: From an anatomical point of view, the thyroid
gland is located in the throat, in the area of what is commonly called the
Adam’s apple. It is formed of two oblong lobes lying on either side of the
larynx, near the vocal chords. These two lobes each weigh approximately 15
grams (½ ounce) and are linked by a relatively narrow band of tissue. They
are also filled with colloid, a kind of viscous substance. To find them, simply
place the thumb and middle finger of your hand on either side of the neck
and then swallow. You will then feel a slight elevation of the trachea and the
thyroid gland itself.
As an endocrine gland, the thyroid secretes a hormone called thyroxine,
which is quite important for our body. First of all, this hormone plays a basic
role in the growth process, notably because of the action it exerts on the
development of the long bones. Secondly, it acts on metabolism as a whole.
More precisely, it facilitates the passage of nutritive elements in the blood,
regulates the internal temperature of the body, and controls the circulation of
blood. Thirdly, it is responsible for the development of the brain in children and,
generally speaking, of the development of their cerebrospinal nervous system.
It is therefore not surprising to learn that the Egyptians called the thyroid gland
“the life gland” and often represented it by a sun placed on the throat.
The thyroid gland also secretes triiodothyronine, whose action is
practically identical to that of thyroxine, as well as thyrocalcitonine,
which controls more specifically the rate of calcium in the blood. The
combined activity of these three hormones enables the thyroid to furnish
all our cells with iodine, an element vitally necessary for their activity.
When the secretion is insufficient, a fairly serious physiological disorder
can take place. In young children, a malfunction of the thyroid gland can
unfortunately result in cretinism, a form of irreversible mental
debility and physical degeneration. In extreme cases, death
ensues. It is therefore important to be vigilant regarding this
matter, especially during childhood.

Since we have just alluded to problems which can result from a
malfunctioning thyroid gland, we might add that physicians classify them
in two major categories: hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, depending
on whether the thyroid secretions are excessive or insufficient. In the first
instance, the person tends to be excitable, even aggressive, and often suffers
from hypertension or tachycardia. In the second instance, the individual
generally lacks vitality and often exhibits a sickly sluggishness, while being
predisposed to hypotension. In either case, medical intervention is imperative,
and a specialist, preferably an endocrinologist, needs to be consulted. If not
attended to, this disorder can degenerate and become incurable.
THE THYROID CENTER: By definition, the thyroid center is the psychic
counterpart of the thyroid gland and is located in the same place—that is, in
the throat, in the area of the Adam’s apple. Its primary function concerns the
mental processes. More precisely, it controls the rapidity of the interchange
between the objective and subjective phases of our consciousness. The more
it is awakened, the more efficient our faculties of observation, analysis, and
reasoning are. Conversely, people whose thyroid center is insufficiently
developed are not intellectually keen, have much difficulty in concentrating,
and suffer from a certain intellectual laziness.
Apart from the positive influence it exerts on our mental processes, the
thyroid center is of considerable interest on the mystical level. Being adjacent
to the vocal chords, it amplifies the power of the vowel sounds when intoned
with full voice. In other words, it reinforces the physical, psychic, and
spiritual impact of the intonation produced in us and around us. Moreover, the
thyroid elevates the vibratory quality of air at the moment it passes through
the larynx when going to the lungs. By so doing, this center intensifies
the positive polarity of the Vital Life Force and accentuates the influence
which the cosmic essence exerts on our psychic being. If only for these two
reasons, we must make every effort to awaken it properly and to bring it to its
maximum activity.
As you learned in the Seventh Temple Degree, the vowel sound THO
(pronounced “th” as in “breath”; “o” as in “note”; place stress on “th”), which
is intoned on F sharp above middle C, is especially effective in
stimulating the thyroid center. As you also learned, the color blue
exerts the greatest vibratory influence on it. Consequently, the

following exercise should be performed for developing the psychic activity
of this center.
EXPERIMENT: Sit with your back as straight as possible and your feet
flat on the floor, slightly apart.
Place the joined tips of the thumb, index finger, and middle finger of your
dominant hand over the thyroid gland. If you find the position of these fingers
too tiring, simply place your hands on your lap throughout this exercise.
Then close your eyes, take a deep breath through the nose, and hold the air
in your lungs for a few moments.
While slowly exhaling, intone the vowel sound THO and visualize
your thyroid center as a blue sphere approximately 3 centimeters (1 inch)
in diameter.
Repeat this process six times for a total of seven intonations. Then remain
seated in silence and be attentive to any impressions you may receive.
As is the case whenever we engage in the awakening of a psychic center,
this exercise will probably be followed by a tingling sensation in the area of
the thyroid gland or in the lower part of the throat. Furthermore, you will
experience a feeling of mental regeneration and you will feel much more
alert on the intellectual level. In other words, you will notice a temporary
improvement in your reasoning processes. We indicate that this is a temporary
situation, because this effect can be permanent only from the moment the
thyroid center is fully activated.
With best wishes for Peace Profound,
Sincerely and fraternally,
YOUR CLASS MASTER
