The course provides an analysis of ethical issues facing youth, interscholastic, intercollegiate, Olympic, professional, and business sport entities. Course Objectives: The students will be able to: describe the major foundational theories of ethical decision-making define values and morals and their development in individuals discuss social responsibility in sport identify personal ethics in the rights and responsibilities of the athlete, coach, and administrator apply ethical theory to practical situations in sport management demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of the history, trends, and the future of ethical studies in sport discuss current ethical issues in sport Recommended Text: Lumpkin, A., Stoll, S., & Beller, J. Grading: Examinations Group Project Class Discussions & Assignments 60% 20% 20% Examinations: Three examinations will be given during the semester. Each exam will count for 20% of the final grade. The final examinations will be the third exam proctored. Group Project: Each student will team with a small group to complete a written report. The group project will count for 20% of the final grade. Class Discussion & Assignments: Students will participate in class discussions. Case assignments will provide students with the opportunity to review ethical questions in more depth. It is expected that each student will arrive to class on time, and any missed class assignments could affect the student’s final class standing. There will be no make-up exam without prior notification and agreement by the instructor. Course Policies: 1. All examinations, the midterm, and the final examination are to be taken at the assigned time. 2. All examinations must be completed in the assigned time. 3. Case assignments are due at the beginning of class on the assigned date. 4. Numerically quantifiable performance on tests, group projects, group discussions and case assignments will be the criteria used for grade calculation. 5. Final grade notification will be provided by the University Registrar’s Office via the final grade report mailed to your home. Grades will not be posted.
