NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The weather is getting cooler and it’s starting to look and feel
more and more like fall! As the cooler weather arrives, it is
important to make sure your children are dressed appropriately for school. All students will go outside for recess unless
it’s raining, snowing or below zero weather! Coats, jackets
and/or long pants are necessary for colder weather.
This quarter, teachers have been busy assessing students
and planning instruction to meet the needs of all students.
The first quarter brings Acuity testing for grades 3 – 6, K – 2
Assessments for grades K – 2 and NWEA/MAP testing for
grade 2. These tests give teachers vital information in order
to provide each student with the instruction they need to be
successful.
Parent Teacher conferences are quickly approaching! We
would like to meet with 100% of our parents, so please make
sure you sign up for a time! If you have any questions about
your time, or if you need to change your conference time,
please call the office. During Parent Teacher conferences, we
will have a Book Fair in the library, and, this year, we will
have special sessions on Standards Based Grading (SBG).
The SBG sessions will be Wednesday, October 22 at 4:30 and
Thursday, October 23 at 6:00! Please join us in the gym if
you would like more information on the grading system in
OPS.
As we begin the fall season, we have some fun activities
planned. On Friday, October 17 the PTO is planning a fun
SPOOKTACULAR event! This will be a fun ‘carnival’ like event
where students can wear their costumes and play fun games.
Also, October 31st classrooms will have their Harvest Parties
from 2:45 – 3:45. Be on the lookout for more information
about these fun events!
The week of October 20 is Red Ribbon Week, and we have
lots of fun things going on! Each day a different theme is
planned, and students are encouraged to take part each day
by dressing accordingly. Watch for a flyer for the daily dress
themes. Students will also take part in a door decorating
contest and they will take a pledge to be drug free!
October is a busy month and I look forward to seeing all of
you at our many events and activities this month! Remember, there is no school on Thursday, October 23 and Friday,
October 24, 2014.
Happy Fall!
Ms. Hanson

EXCITING NEWS FROM ESL
There are so many new and exciting things
going on in ESL this year! This year both
teachers are new to the ESL program. We
have really enjoyed making the transition to
ESL and working with our students. One of the
things we really want to emphasize this year
with our ESL students is the take-home book
program. This is a program for all of our ESL
students. With the take-home book program,
students take home books every night to
read. Books can be read to a family member
or read on their own. Students should read at
least one book each night and having a family
member sign their reading log. The reading
log holds students accountable for getting
their books read and returned. Each time a
student brings their books back they get a
new set of books. New to the take home program this year is the reward system. Students
get to enter points in a program called “Class
Dojo” for all the books that they have read.
Students earn prizes each time they have
reached a new reading goal. This has been
really exciting for the students, and they have
enjoyed working towards their reading goals.
We will continue with this program throughout the entire school year. We want our students to not only be reading everyday, but to
ENJOY reading as well.

Cantober.
Cantober is our chance to show that Rose Hill
can make a difference . Here is the challenge: Bring as many canned food items as
possible to share with those in need. The top
five most needed items right now at the
Omaha Food Bank are :
#1 Canned Tuna
#2 Mac-N-Cheese
#3 Pancake Mix
#4 Peanut Butter
#5 Green Beans
(All non-perishable items will be accepted!)
I know we all have what it takes to make a
difference in our community . Let’s Do it Together as Rose Hill Rams.
A Note From the Health Office
NEWS FROM FIRST GRADE
Fall is here, the beans and bacon are cooking on an
open fire! Ms. McCormick’s class celebrated River City
Round-Up and dressed up like cowboys and cowgirls.
We wrote a fairy tale about a cowboy/cowgirl. We
learned that a fairy tale begins with the words “once
upon a time” and ends with “happily ever after.”
Please stop and look at our stories in the hall.
We have been working hard reviewing our short vowel
sounds and our first fifty high frequency words. We
love to read our books from the library and in our
rooms.
In Math we are learning the counting-on strategy, doubles plus one and doubles minus one strategy. Our goal
is to learn our addition and subtraction Math Facts
within 20.
Ms. McCormick is looking forward to meeting the families at conferences the week of October 20th. Please call
the office if the scheduled time does not work out.
Hope to see you all at the Fall Festival and Conferences.
It is time for annual health screenings here at
school. Screenings are done on all children in
grades first through fourth, and they include vision, hearing, dental, height and weight. Kindergartners have this done at their Kindergarten
Physical Exams. It is a Nebraska state mandate
that these are done, and new this year is that a
Health Screening Report Card will be sent home
with the results to all parents or guardians. All
information is kept confidential and all screenings are done in a private setting. You will receive your Health Care Report Card at conferences along with their regular report card. If you
have questions regarding these screenings,
please feel free to call me.
Thank you for letting me participate in keeping
your children healthy. Healthy children are better learners.
