Beverage of the
Month: Water
Water flushes toxins
out of vital organs,
carries nutrients to
cells and provides a
moist environment
for your ear, nose
and throat. In addition, mild dehydration can drain your
energy.
No single formula fits everyone but here are some things to keep in mind:







Water is lost through breath, sweat, urine, and bowel movements. Exercising in
altitude increases your breath rate and urination. Heated buildings/environments
may affect hydration status.
Men should drink roughly 13 cups (3 liters) of water a day. Women should drink
roughly 9 cups (2.2 liters) of water a day.
Another formula is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily.
Make sure your urine is colorless or light yellow to ensure that you are drinking
enough.
An extra 1.5 to 2.5 cups of water for short bouts of exercise are needed. For
more intense exercise (lasting greater than an hour), use a sports drink to ensure
adequate sodium balance.
Drink water before, during, and after exercise. Drink a glass of water before each
meal and between meals.
Do not drink water all at once, as you should be having small amounts throughout
the day. This will help keep your metabolism working efficiently.
