Our Earth's surface h'as many
_ shapes. We call these surface
shapes landforms.
, Here are a few:
• Archipelago {ar-kuh-PEL-uh~ go}: a group of islands.
• Bay: a body of water partly
surrounded by land, with a big
opening to the ocean.
• Cape: a piece of land that
sticks out into the sea or ocean,
usually curving to form a bay. ~:
• Delta: land deposited by a
,.,
river as it flows into a larger body
of water.
• Dune: sand that has been piled
up on a hill or ridge by the wind.
• Foothill: the hill at the bottom
of a mountain.
• Hill: gently sloping land that
is not as high as a mountain.
• Inlet: a small body of water
that cuts into land.
• Island: land surrounded by
water.
• Isthmus: {iss-mus}: a narrow
stretch of land connecting two
larger areas of land.
• Lake: water surrounded by
land.
• Mountain: high rocky land
with steep sides. A mountain
range is a series of mountains.
• Ocean: a large body of salt
water. Four oceans cover and
connect great areas of the Earth's
surface.
• Peninsula: a stretch of land
almost surrounded by water.
• Plains: areas of mostly flat
land.
• Plateau: {pIa-toe} an area of
mostly flat land that is higher
than the land around it.
• River: flowing water that
empties into a large body of water
or another river.
• Shore: land at the edge of a
body of water.
• Sound: a narrow body of
water that separates an island
from a mainland.
• Summit: highest peak of a hill
or mountain.
• Tributary: a smaller river that
flows into a larger river.
• Valley: the land between hills
or mountains. A canyon is a
narrow valley.
• Waterfall: a large or small
stream of water that falls off a
high edge of land.

Ulysses S. Grant was the son of a
farmer who ran a tannery. * He went to
West Point but resigned from the Army
nine years later. He went back into
service when the Civil War started. He became a famous
military hero and commander of the Union armies.
Grant was not as good a president as he was a soldier.
There were many scandals during his two terms. Grant
was a very honest man, and was never involved in the
scandals. However, many consider him a very weak
president.
* A tannery is a business that turns hides into leather.

What to do:
1. Put the banana slices in a bowl.
2. Put scoops of cottage cheese on top.
3. Sprinkle wheat germ, raisins and nuts on top.

Teacher's
Guide
For use by teachers and parents at home and at
school.
For use with issue: Geography ABCs
Main idea: This issue is about geography. The following is a list of activities to be used
with this issue. They are listed in order of difficulty, with the easier pre-reader
assignments listed first. Ask the children to do the following :
1. Find the following pictures: an Alpha Mouse flying a kite, a globe, an Alpha Mouse in
a canoe, sheep, a pirate, a dam, a tepee, mountains, a farmer.
2. When is Geography Week? Circle it on a calendar. For each day of Geography Week,
study about a country you would like to visit.
3. Design a Geography Week poster.
4. Why is geography so fun and interesting to learn? How can knowing about
geography help you in school and when you are grown? If you could visit any place in the
world, where would it be?
5. Circle all the names of landforms (mountain, beach, etc.) you have seen. What types
are in your area? Which are in your state?
6. Look on a map or globe. What types of landforms do you see? How are they
represented? How many of the landforms lis ted in the issue can you find?
7. Find the following words: awareness, borders, surface, series, climate, sloping,
environment, ridge, depend. Define and make up a new sentence for each one.
8. Look in your newspaper or on a world map to find the answers to the follOwing
questions:
a. Which countries border Poland?
b. What is the weather forecast for New York City?
c. Which ocean borders the United States on the east?
9. Circle all the city names on the front page of your local paper. Find each one on a map.
