PASTOR’S CORNER HOLY MASS – “The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life” (LG 11, CCC 1324). With this Pastor’s Corner I will begin a series on the parts of the Mass and the Mass as a whole. It is important and urgent that we understand the meaning of our “worship of the Father in spirit and in truth” (Jn. 4:23). Thus we can participate actively so that we can receive and share the Holy Communion that God is offering us in each Mass on ever deeper levels. If I must die, my hope is to reach the threshold of appreciation of God’s SelfGift to the degree that, by God’s grace, I may die of ecstasy during the celebration of Holy Mass. Blessed Imelda, the patron Saint of First Holy Communion, did die of ecstasy during the time of silent prayer following her first Holy Communion at age 11. We begin Mass with the sign of the cross and “In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” God is love. God is a communion of life and love. God is a Trinity, three Persons in one Divine Nature. God loves us first and always. Jesus poured out his blood on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. This is the greatest expression of love imaginable. There is no greater love. We begin each Mass with this focus on God who is Love, and on the cross which reminds us of the depths of God’s Love for poor sinners. God is ready to love his life and love into us anew whenever we open our hearts in prayer with the sign of the cross and the invocation of the Trinity. Blessings, Fr. John ST.
