Physics 12 Substantive Assignment
Before you complete this assignment package, you must read and complete the Physics 12
Reading Booklet that is on our website: https://sailacademy.ca/wpcontent/uploads/2015/07/Physics-12-SA-Reading-Booklet-2015.pdf
This First Assignment may take between 5 - 7 hours depending on your background and prior
knowledge. It will be marked and will make up 5% of your grade for the course as it covers
5% of the learning activities. Please follow the instructions carefully.
This assignment is intended to familiarize you with some of the basic concepts and
skills related from Physics 12.
1. Read all the information provided in the Physics 12 Reading Booklet from
our Webpage.
2. Complete the Practice and Self Check assignments.
3. Mark and correct your Practice questions.
4. As an online student it is an important skill to learn to self-assess throughout
your work.
5. As an online student, you should be able to find answers outside the provided
course materials
6. Now that you have completed the lessons in the Physics 12 Reading Booklet,
you are ready to tackle the Substantive Assignment.
7. Complete the Substantive Assignment – you must show all your work.
8. When you have completed all your work, scan it and attach it to your
Online Registration.
9. You may use a calculator for any part of the assignment.
Students should be able to demonstrate the following Prescribed Learning Outcomes
following the completion of this First Assignment:






write vector equations and create vector diagrams
use vector diagrams to solve problems
resolve a vector into two orthogonal components using a diagram and/or trigonometry
use models (e.g., physics formulae, diagrams, graphs) to solve problems
use appropriate units and metric prefixes.
systematically gather and organize data from experiments/ researches.

Substantive Assignment
Total: ___________/20
Note: Before you attempt this assignment, you must make sure you read and complete the
self-marking assignments in the Reading Booklet.
You must show your work to receive full mark
1. Objective: To find if the sequence of adding vectors change the resultant vectors
Problem: Captain Bartholomew Roberts, one of the most successful pirates between 1719 and
1722, captured more than 400 ships off the coast of West Africa and Canada and the Caribbean.
One of Roberts’s most profound qualities was banning his crew from gambling due to his strong
religious beliefs which would unfortunately cause subtle hostilities between him and various
crew members. To his dismay, after hiding one of his treasures of the coast of West Africa, a
disgruntle deckhand by the name of Black Jack Stanford decided to rearrange the sequence of
steps to finding the treasure so that it would become untraceable.
So now Captain Bartholomew Roberts needs your help to regain the sequence of the steps to
finding the treasure. One scientist by the name of Captain Rosenstock previously suggested that
the sequence of the steps taken does not matter. Your job is to analyze if his assumption is
correct. Best of luck!
Here is what you have to do.
1) Set up a Cartesian coordinate system that includes north, south, east, and west..
Consider north as +Y and east as +X.
2) Walk vector route for all 3 routes by stepping heal to toe. Place a washer at the end. You
will represent them by drawing arrows on the given graph grids.
3) Find the final resultant for the 3 different routes.
4) You must show your calculations for all the resultant vectors.
5) The resultant vectors must have magnitude and direction. Look at the reading booklet if
you do not know how to find the proper direction.
2
Physics 12 Substantive Assignment
1 point for each graph and 1 point for each calculation – 6 points
You must show how you calculations for the resultant vectors using component method. Look at
the reading booklet if you need help.
Route 1: (5 feet north: 7 feet east: 3 feet south: 9 feet west: 8 feet south)
Draw the arrows
Show your calculations
Route 2: (8 feet south: 5 feet north: 3 feet south: 7 feet east: 9 feet west)
Draw the arrows
Show your calculations

Route 3: (9 feet west: 3 feet south: 7 feet east: 5 feet north: 8 feet south)
Draw the arrows
Show your calculations
Conclusion: Write a short statement discussing how the order in which vectors are added affect
the magnitude and direction of the resultant vector. You statement must be based from your
research above and you have to provide evidence. (2 points)

2. You must use component method and show all your work to receive full credit.
Add the arrows and find the resultant. (2 points)
3. Add the vectors: (2points)
1511 at 350 W of N + 8822 at 720 W of S + 333 at 270 S of W

4. A sail boat is heading 350 East of North at 7.2 knots. The ocean current is 250 South of
East at 1.2 knots. What speed and direction is the sailboat moving at? (2points)
5. Two people pull a wagon using 2 ropes with an angle 500 between them. If one person
pulls with 110 N and the other with 115 N, what is the resulting force on the wagon?
(2 points)

Physics 12 Substantive Assignment
6. A golfer can get to a green by hitting a 170 m shot to the corner of the fairway in Figure
5.21, then hitting a 150 m shot to the center of the green. However, there is a gap in the trees,
which permits her to make a direct shot to the green if she dares risk ending up in the ditch
beside the green. The edge of the ditch next to the green is 8.0 m from the center of the green.
The golfer knows she can hit a three-wood shot 220 m on the fly. She can win the tournament
if she makes it to the green in one shot. Should she 'go for it?'
Back up your answer with data! Show all your calculations (3 points)
1. A helium balloon is rising in the air with a resultant velocity of 6.1 m/s. If the vertical
component of its velocity is 6.0 m/s, what is the horizontal component of its velocity (caused
by a side wind)? ( 1 point)
Now that you have complete this assignment to your best ability, scan and attach it to your Online
Registration.
