Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 2. We hope you had a wonderful Easter vacation and were
able to spend quality time together as a family. We are looking forward to the events
and challenges of another busy term.
We would like to take this opportunity to note a few reminders. A new homework
contract is sent home each Tuesday. It needs to be completed and handed in on the
following Monday. The weekly spelling list and number facts are also part of the
homework and we encourage you to support your child’s learning of these. They are
tested each Friday. Your child also needs to complete sentences using words from the
spelling list. These sentences are completed in a separate book and are due each
Friday. Students are also expected to read at home each evening. If you are willing to
listen to your child read on a regular basis, this would prove to be very beneficial.
Please sign their reading record sheet. This is checked by the teacher weekly also.
Please encourage your child to complete all of their homework and meet these due
dates. Time management and organizational skills are essential in high school and life
in general.
Please also check with your child about whether they need any of their school
equipment replaced, e.g. scissors, glue, ruler, rubbers, pens, etc. When students do
not have their own equipment, it disrupts the class and affects teaching and learning
time. Students are also required to have a hat and water bottle at school every day.
Please ensure that all items are well labelled.
Information has been issued about the students’ senior shirts and order forms need
to be completed and returned. Senior shirts are expected to arrive this term.

Information and invoices for camp will be sent home this term. The Year 5 and 6 school
camp is at Runaway Bay Super Sports Centre from 11 - 14 September. Please take the
time to read the information letter which explains details and payment options.
Please remember to email Melinda Lindley on [email protected] any past or future
photographs you take of school events involving Year 6 students. Work will begin on
the 2017 Yearbook this term.
Parent volunteers are needed for an individual reading program for the first half hour
of the day from Monday – Thursday. If you are able to assist please contact us.
Considering the packed school calendar, it is certain that the end of the term will be
upon us before we realise it. Semester 1 report cards will be issued during the last
week of the term.
Thank you for your ongoing support and we encourage you to approach either of us if
you have any concerns or questions regarding your child’s learning.
Kind regards,
Belinda Abell ([email protected])
& Sharelle Down ([email protected])
Learning Areas
English
Mathematics
Students will first study still image advertisements.
They will view and comprehend still image adverts,
and study the vocabulary and text features – such as
cohesive devices and modality. They will repeat the
process across different media and then progress to
the creation of their own advertisement.
In the first half of the term, students will add,
subtract and multiply decimals, multiply decimals
by multiples of ten, construct nets of 3D objects,
investigate volume and capacity, apply their
knowledge of shape and measurement to design
the biggest pyramid, and Investigate numbers less
than zero.
In the second half of the term, students will be
introduced to the features of online, radio and
television news reports. After comparing their
language features and analysing the images, they
will select a news report and draft and publish a
written response.
Science
In Science, students will investigate energy. We will
create simple electrical circuits, understand
conductors and insulators, and explore energy use –
and wastage. We will compare methods of producing
electricity and learn about fossil fuels and renewable
resources. Finally, students will compare energy
saving tips and learn about energy from waste.
The Arts: Music & Visual Arts
In Music, students will continue to develop their
performance, composition and ukulele skills through
the use of scales and a variety of music elements.
Performance skills will once again be on show for our
Parade item on Friday, 12 May.
In Visual Arts, they will work with different materials
to produce several art pieces requiring a variety of
skills. Our focus will be on Perspective Drawing this
term.
In the second half of the term, students will then
study the order of operations, revise the concept
of division, compare and order fractions, revisit
angles and calculate unknown angles, and explore
whole number and decimal patterns.

electors and elected representatives in Australia’s
government and will consider the rights,
responsibilities and obligations of Australians as
national and global citizens. They will analyse
continuities and changes in Australian democracy
and citizenship rights from the perspectives of
different groups of people in our society including
migrants, women, children and Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Peoples. They will sequence
information about events and represent time by
creating timelines.
