THE HEMEL HEMPSTEAD SCHOOL Year 10 Independent Booster Work Dear Parent/Carer Our study partners that students work with in Year 11, Elevate, talk about the work ethic and strategies used by the best performing students year on year and this very much ties in with our school focus of ASPIRE. One specific strategy is that students should ASPIRE to complete, in addition to their class and home learning, a proportion of additional work to support and extend their learning. To support parents and students over the forthcoming year, I have put together this booklet to outline suggested activities that students can complete as ‘further study’ tasks. They have all been suggested by subject leaders and are organised, for your convenience, in subject order. Ms E Bevan Assistant Headteacher KS4 Contents English Maths Science Humanities MFL Performing Arts Physical Education Social Sciences Technology English Students are NOT expected to read all these books however, these titles all provide sufficient challenge and are of the quality we would expect students to read over the course of the next two years. Many titles are likely to appear in a Language exam in extract form. The following two websites give students bite size questions and problems to work through with associated answers where necessary. Corbett Maths 5-a-day - outside Mr Collard’s teaching room a wall display gives students a few questions each day in paper format. Students can also gain access to the website using the following address: http://corbettmaths.com/5-a-day/gcse1/ Mr Barton Maths - GCSE Takeaway - All past exam questions organised by topic (old A*-G grading) with video explanations: http://www.mrbartonmaths.com/pupils.htm Science The Science department recommends students use Kerboodle (http://www.kerboodle.com/users/login), the online resources to revisit topics after they have been taught. This resource should also be used to practice and revise older topics as they work through the curriculum. Another useful resource is the BBC Bitesize website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/subjects/zrkw2hv) which as well as explaining the core knowledge in a different way, also has useful videos and questions the students can use to check their understanding of topics. There is also a large amount of very helpful resources on the AQA website (http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse/science-a-4405), including sheets on key Scientific terminology, exemplar ISAs (Controlled Assessment), and past exam papers. Humanities Geography Some wider reading of current Geographical events would be really helpful for students. The following websites are a good source of relevant and up to date information: http://www.geographyinthenews.rgs.org/ http://geographyfieldwork.com/GeographyinthenewsBBC.htm History GCSE recommended reading list: Colin S Gray War, Peace and International Relations 2007 Steven Lee European Dictatorships 2012 John Lewis Gaddis The Cold War 2011 Ian Kershaw Hitler 2000 Useful documentaries: The Nazis: A warning from History https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=the+nazis+a+warning+f rom+history&safe=active Andrew Marr’s the Making of Modern Britain (6 episodes) https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=andrew+marr+making+ of+modern+britain&safe=active The USA: boom and bust https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=usa+1920s+boom+and +bust+&safe=active Kenneth Branagh the Cold War (23 episodes) https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=cold+war+kenneth+bra nagh&safe=active RS http://www.rsrevision.com/contents/index.htm http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/websites/11_16/site/re.shtml This website for Past Papers, Religious Studies/GCSE/Specification B/ http://www.aqa.org.uk/exams-administration/exams-guidance/find-pastpapers-and-mark-schemes Also, just keeping abreast with the news for any stories that relate to ethical or moral issues, they could keep a diary. MFL French & German Past papers with mark schemes and sound files can be accessed through the VLE to practise both Listening and Reading skills. EDEXCEL French and German text books – both higher and foundation levels are also available on the VLE – work through the extra sections of these at the back of the book. Useful websites include: o Quizlet.com – to practise vocab o German GCSE Quizlet - https://quizlet.com/class/1853463/ o www.languagesonline.org.uk – to practise grammar o GCSE BBC bitesize for Listening and Reading practice Performing Arts Art Students could complete the following for all projects to further improve their understanding and development of skills: Visit virtual galleries and complete a write-up of artist they have found that link to their ideas. Excellent websites could be the following; www.tate.org.uk, www.npg.org.uk, www.saatchigallery.com Look at studentartguide.com to research ideas and see other student examples. Create a pinterest account and make boards collecting images that you like or things that inspire you. Use Instagram (or another mobile app that can be used with photos) to manipulate your own images and print a series to go in your sketchbook (making sure it links to your ideas/artists). Draw a section of your final idea enlarged to focus on just one area of your work. This can be produced in pencil and then a variety of media to further practice your skills. Keep drawing - anything you can do will help you improve your skills. Dance Students should work through their Swansong booklet and complete the additional tasks. Drama Students should use the VLE which has past papers, mark schemes, information and guidance on how to keep their log book effectively. Students should also try and go to the theatre and see as much as they can. Social Sciences Business Studies a. Increasing understanding and business vocabulary Once a week read the BBC website Business Tab, or the business section of the newspaper. As they read a story, note down two or three words or terms that they don’t understand on an index card , sticky note (or pad if not available) use the internet to find out what that term or word means and explain it in their own words test themselves by looking at the front of the index card until they’re confident Keep adding new words and terms as they read more stories, removing (and retaining) cards as they feel confident with them so that the stack of index cards is about 10 -15 at any given time. b. Increasing analytical skills Having read (or watched) a business story in the news discuss it with family. What does it mean? Why is it news? c. Increasing general business awareness talk about your place of work, job what you do why that’s important how it fits into the overall plan of the company current opportunities and challenges Technology Resistant Materials Revision list for end of year 11 exam – Can be used to guide research http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/design/resistantmaterials/ Questions and answers based on RM Research the designer – Alberto Alessi – what did he make/ what influences did he have on the way we live today? Practice sketching in 3D – include rendering techniques Download Google Sketch Up. Follow tutorials to create buildings and complex shapes - we will be using this later on in the year! Create paper examples of different joints – make some notes on the advantages and disadvantages of each joint. Catering Read a monthly Food Magazine e.g. Good Food, Olive or Sainsbury’s (all available from Tec8) Cook recipes from BBC Good Food (they are checked for accuracy) Watch a Cooking/Chef/Sustainability TV programme either live or on catch up Cook a dish for your family once per week to practice chopping skills and timing Keep a recipe file Attend the Cake and Biscuit Decorating club to develop your piping/decorating skills When visiting Food Outlets, e.g. cafes, restaurants, observe portion control, costing, menu planning, nutritional value, role of the wait staff and promotional techniques for the catering establishment. Product Design Bring coursework home to add more in depth and detail to the written work (this can always be improved!) Look up simple nets and print them out and make them (this will help pupils when it comes to their year 11 coursework and how to get high grades). Once they have made a net they can then attempt to make their own net looking at where they could add windows, tabs/openings, and more complex structures. Researching and finding out building materials so that they can be more descriptive and thorough for their coursework. Textiles Practise designing – look on the internet and in books and magazines at fashion illustrations and spend time copying them so that you are building up your muscle memory. Read fashion blogs to keep up with current trends. Create an audit of your wardrobe – check the care labels in every item of clothing and make a tally of the different fibre types contained within them. Research issues within the clothing industry such as fair trade and the use of sweat shops by high street brands. There are often programmes on TV about these issues, watch them when they are on or search for them on youtube. ICT Keep up to date with innovations. Use the BBCs website (link to ‘Technology’) and BBCs ‘Click’ programme. Use BBC Bitesize to revise. Use the past papers/marks schemes on the VLE to help with revision. Computing Try to watch BBCs ‘Click’ programme every week. Use Codecademy to increase their knowledge and skills of programming in different languages, with a focus on Python. Use the past papers/marks schemes on the VLE to help with revision.
