Their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia
of Sweden will visit Gustavus Adolphus College on
Friday, October 5 in celebration of the 150th
anniversary of the founding of the college by Swedish
immigrants in 1862. South students/staff will be walking to the
college to welcome the Royal couple to St. Peter.
FYI: All staff and students will be getting a photo card from Lifetouch
that says 2012-13 South Elementary Learning Center Student Name
with your name or the student's name on it. It is just for fun! It does
not do any special tricks like open doors or replace any other ID cards.

Check us out on our website: stpeterschools.org You will find the menu, this newsletter, our
personnel list, the yearly calendar, etc on this site. The other schools in the district are also at
this site.
We want your children to be healthy! Get plenty of rest, eat nutritious foods,
and wash your hands!!! When a student is absent, parents MUST phone the
school office and report the illness. The phone number for reporting
absences is 934-2754 ext. 226. We will contact any families who have not
made a call to school.
When Should A Child Stay Home?
If a child is vomiting or has diarrhea, he/she should stay home for 24 hours after the
vomiting or diarrhea has stopped. If a child has a temperature 100 degrees or
greater, he/she should remain at home. Students should remain at home for 24 hours
without fever reducing medication, such as Tylenol, before returning to school.
Schools are not properly staffed or equipped to tend to the clinical needs of sick
children. Our school can only temporarily provide for your child’s medical needs if
they are ill. Parents should arrive promptly following a phone call from school.
If your child has any medical problems: diabetes, asthma, seizures, bee
sting allergies, or other serious medical conditions, please make sure that the school nurse’s
office know about the health concerns. We will advise our staff of these concerns so we can be
aware of any potential problems. Parents will need to provide us with clinical guidelines from
your doctor regarding your child’s health concerns, (i.e. inhaler, medications, injections, etc.)
You entrust your children to us for safe keeping every day – we want to do the
best job we can!
PARENT COUNCIL WILL BE MEETING
ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 8h IN THE MEDIA
CENTER. THE MEETING WILL BE FROM
6:30-7:30 PM.
Fire Prevention Week – October 7-13
We practice fire drills often at school and encourage you to talk about fire
safety at home. Planning a safe escape from your home is very important as
we enter the winter season. Make sure you locate a safe meeting place for all
family members as part of your home safety plan.
Daylight saving time ends on November 4th and not long
after that our evenings get longer than the days. It is
more important than ever to try to maintain those 10 –12
hours of sleep for your child now that they are in school
full days. Learning takes lots of energy. Sleep renews!!
Now is a good time to start that routine. A helpful hint is to begin with
small increments like 15 – 30 minutes earlier each night. Sleep experts tell
us the following amount of sleep per night is best:
Elementary School Students 10 – 12 hours /night
Middle/junior high school 9 – 11 hours/night
Teens need 8.5 – 9.5 hours/night
BUS SAFETY: We are asking for your support regarding safe
behavior on the bus. If your child is experiencing difficulty at
the bus stop, please make a special effort to be there when
they are waiting for and getting off the bus. This will make for
a much safer and happier trip to and from school. Students
at every grade level in District #508 have received bus safety
training. Please remind students that riding the bus is a special privilege. We all
want to continue to strive toward safe and problem-free school buses. If you
have concerns, you may contact school or Saints Bus Service (934-4690).
BOX TOP$ FOR EDUCATION
& LABELS FOR EDUCATION
For the past few years, Parent Council has collected General Mills
“Labels for Learning (Box Tops)”. Please cut the labels off the product and have
your child bring them to school. There is a collection box outside the office. Box
Top coupons are worth 10¢ each when your school sends them to General Mills for
redemption. With Box Top coupons on over a billion packages this year, it will be
easier than ever to earn cash for your school. Parent Council works on projects
that will use this money. If you have questions, please attend a monthly meeting.
We also have a goal meter for Box Tops by the collections box. First submission
date is November 1st! New this year, South Parent Council is collecting Labels for
Education. Please remember to cut the whole UPC. More information on the
collections at South will be available soon.
Parent Council has teamed up with Mrs.Klatt
on this great project! Get your child’s art
printed on gifts for the holidays. Art & order
forms will come home at the end of October.
For additional information, contact
Dawn Selly or Ann Prochaska(parent volunteers).
