Dear Members.
The CCGS laun6hed 1998 with new officers and committee members. Each
committee is planning the work which we hope to accomplish during the year. lf you
would like to serve on a committee or have suggestions for our work in the areas of
programs, puDlications, or iibrary acquisitions, please pass these suggestions along to
a local member.
The goals of our Society are preserving local records including family histories,
publishing a quarterly oi supeflor quality, and teaching geneaiogrcal research to
interested individuals. These goals guide the projects in which we engage.
One of our favorite proJects is the Spring Genealogical Workshop. This year Dr.
Eugene Sneary, program chairman, has procured the services of Dr. David Greene,
Chairman of the Humanities Dept , Predmont College, Demorest, GA. On Saturday,
April 25, Dr. Greene will cove, several topics of interest irom 9:00 until 3.00 with a
luncheon at noon which is a pad of the $20.00 registration fee. Nonmembers pay
$23.00andall registerwith D. Sneary at 770-830-6702, ormail your check to

Another excitrng event is the publication of the 1830 & 1840 Censuses - Canoll
Countv. Georoia ($10.00 which includes postage) and the Abstract of Deed Book E. F.
and G - Canoll Countv. Georoia Both of these publications are featured elsewhere in
this edition.
There are many indivrduals wno contribute their time and resources toward the
success of our Society, and for these persons all of us are truly grateful However,
there are two individuals to whom we need to say a public "thank you " Shirley Gardner
is so faithful in editing the O!,arterly. To her we give a hearty thanks. And to Dave
Word, our able Webmaster, we are most grateful. He keeps our Home Page up-todate (http://members.aol.com/carrollgen/) with the monthly program topic and other
information. He will be happy to help others. Contact him at daword@aol com.
May 1998 bring us peace, progress, and research rewards of new information

.CONFEDERATE REFUGEE DE.SS;ENDANTS THRIVE IN BRAZIL
Oid Trmes: They're die-hard Southemers, 5,000 miles below the Mason-Dxon line
by Shelley Emling, Staff Correspondent
Americana, Brazrl- ln a Portuguese-speaking country, Allison Jones converses
in English, tinged wrth a Southern accent.
He eats foods brought here by his ancestors: grits. watermelon, fried chicken
and fluffy biscuits.
And he proudly drspiays the battle flag of the Coniederate States of America,
draped across the piano in his irvrng room.
Truly, Jones resides in the Old South.
But it's 5,000 miles below the Mason-Dixon line.
Jones, 54, is one of some 100,000 descendants of former Confederates -caiied Corfederados here -- who were unable to stomach the rule of Yankees and fled
their homes followrng the Civll war for a new beginning in this tropical South American
nation.
Jones and the other descendants ot these 10.000 or so Confederates have
managed to stay true to their Southern roots, no easy task in a land that prefers
sensuo!s sarnbas to Dixreland jazz and the tastes of black beans and pork to those of
sweet potato pie.
"We care about tne plight of our ancestors, and we Con't want to forget about
them," Jones said.
Jones, an engineer, is one of 90 active members of the Fratemity of American
Descendants, or FDA by its Podugese acronym, founded in 1954 to preserve the
hrstories of their ancestors.
ln the past, they've done tnrs by holding annuai soirees featuring everything
from Vrrginia reels to antebellum gowns, celebrations that would please even Scarlett
O'Hara
And in the future they hope to estabiish student exchange programs between
Brazllran unrversitres and those rn the southern United States, including Auburn
University in Alabama.
But therr ma,n job wiii conti4Lre to be to maintain the Llonfede!'ate cemetery
that's nearly hrdden amicl acres of sugar cane near the town of Santa Elarbara []'Oeste,
about 10 miies outside Americana, where some 400 oi their ancestors are buned tn
graves marked Dy iombstones wth epitaphs in English.
Among the buried rs Col. Wrlliam Hutchinson Norns, Jones' greal-greatgrandfalher, who was born in Oglethorpe Ga., in 1800.
Norris blazed the trailto Brazii, arriving in '1866 and persuading other
Southerners to follow wth tales of cheap land.
"He was too old to fight in the Civil War, but some of the others in my family
did," Jones said.
Also buried rn the cemetery rs W S. Wse, the great-uncle of Rosalynn Carter.
Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife visited the cemetery during a trip to Brazil
in 1972, when he was still governor ot Georgia.
"The most remarkable thing was, when they spoke, they sounded just like

people in South Georgia " the governor sard shortiy after his vrsit. He added that he
was impressed by the patrotism and cohesiveness of the descendants.
lndeed, dunng the Persran Gulf War, many of the descendants were glued to
their teievisrons, cheer ng the Americans on to victgry
The story of the Confederate exodus to Brazil began with the end of the Civil
War in 1865, when many Southemers found their property destroyed and their
citizenship revoked
Anywhere from 6,000 to 10 000 of them fled to Brazii, in part because it still
allowed slavery - untll '1888 - but mostiy because Emperor Pedro il subsidlzed their
trips and gave them tax breaks in hopes these experienced farmers wouid establisn a
prosperous cotton rnduslry in Brazil.
Lured by recruiters at church gatherings and town hall meetings, the
Southemers settled rn all parts of Brazil, rncludrng the Amazon region. But disease and
hardship drove perhaps 60 percent of thern back to the United States Only one
communrty prospereci, the aptly named Americana, now a city of 200,000 and a
blossomrng textrle center
Led by Norris, settiers were captivated by this sugar-cane growing region, some
80 mrtes northwest of Sao Paulo whlch offered the brick-red soil and sultry climate
they'd been accustomed to it also oiiered a connection to ihe natron's railroad, which
enabled them to buy and seil what they wanted.
Over the years, they mixed in well with therr darker-skinned nerghbors, and (
wasn't long before they were rntroducing the pancake, waffle, watermelon, steel-bladed
plow, coal-heated iron, silk weaving l(erosene lamp, pecans and peaches to the
indigenous popuiation.
The Confederates also brouqht wrth them Southern mrssronaries, who worked
as teachers and established such high educational standards they've continued to have
an efiect tociay. Amencana has an illiteracy rate of only 14 percent compared to 25
percent in other regions.
One re|c rn partrcular that remarns from this era is the Confederate flag, a
controversial symbol rn the tlnited States where rt conjures up images of siavery and
racism Here. it decorates the 25-foot obelisk that stands at the entrance of the
cemetery, on which the names of the frrst families are emblazoned. names such as
Mcl\rlullan, N4oore, Pyles Hawthorne, Grady Easton, Cullen Barr, Buford, Yancey and
Whitaker.
"Ihe flaq represents history, and we have no rnterest rn the Ku Klux Klan or
anything lit(e that," Jones said. 'The fiag doesn't carry the kind oi negatlve connotation
here that tt does tn the ljnrted states "
A small museum opened rn 1988 in Santa Barbara D'Oeste to teil the story of
the immigrants and their imports, rncludrng perhaps baseball- although Sao Paulo's
Japanese immrgrants, who arrived in the 1890s, also claim baseball as their impoft.
It gives even those residents who aren't descendants of Confederates a chance
to learn about their city s hrstory, aithough history is hard to ignore in a place like
Americana.
"We learn aboLrt the Contederates nol from school, but it is something you learn
just by living here," said Sandra Edrlene de Solza, 23, a student. "l mean, when streets
have names iike Ferguson, Dodson and McKnrght, you pick up on alltrte history "
I o make sure their history is never iorgotten, Jones'group, the FDA, decided in
1985 to invite the publrc to an annuai two-day picnic, usualiy in April, to celebrate

Southern dance, dress, food and musjc. At these gathenngs which attract 1,500
people or more, hoop skirts and Civil War untForms are donned the Confederate flas is
hoisted, old pictures are pored through, and strains of "Dixie" are played.
ln addition to the FDA, 20 decendants recently formed a chapter of the Sons of
the Confederate Veteraos here, which is that group's first chapter outside the United
States. One U. S. chapter of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, in Hotlywood, Fla.,
plans to visit next spring. tts members plan to perform enactments of Civil Wartime
batties.
Jones, in particular, has kept tradition a|ve by teaching i_i.S. history to his three
daughters - as well as English, which they speak at home.
Jones visited the southern United States rn the late 1970s, including a trip to
Georgia that included visits to A anta, Athens and Ogleihorpe.
