American Heart Association – Wear Red Day – February 3, 2017 Why Go Red? Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. Fortunately, we have the power to change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. To help raise awareness, the national movement of “Wear Red” day was started as a reminder to every one of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Bane students and staff are encouraged to wear RED on this special day to show our support for the cause. Bus Driver Appreciation Week February 6 – 10, 2017 Each year we recognize the efforts of the wonderful bus drivers who transport our children to and from school and other school related events. What are the different types of tests given and what do they mean? DPM stands for District Progress Monitoring. For science, it feels like a normal unit test: same time limits (60 minutes for 2nd and 3rd, 75 minutes for 4th and 5th), and approx. same amount of questions. Unlike the unit tests, however, that only cover the most recent unit of study, 3rd and 4th grade DPMs are cumulative, meaning that they cover everything that has been taught up to that point. 2nd Grade DPMs 2 & 3 are not cumulative, only covering the topics in between each DPM. A benchmark, however, is a test that looks and feels more like STAAR (more questions, 4 hour time limit, etc.). This is like what we just had with the 4th writing and 5th reading benchmarks. These are usually what we call "shut down days", meaning, no visitors, lunch schedule changes, etc. Only 5th grade has a science benchmark since they are the only grade with Science STAAR. STAAR is the standardized test in the state of Texas that will assess the knowledge and the skills of students in elementary and secondary school classes from grade 3 to grade 11. These are also “shut down days” for our school, meaning no visitors on those days and lunch schedules are changed to accommodate the needs of testing students. We encourage parents to attend our information meetings, schedule a conference with your child’s teacher, or contact the school if you have any questions regarding testing. What does stress look like for children? Como se mirán los niños estresados? Doesn’t want to go to school, especially on test day No quiere ir a la escuela, especialmente el día de la prueba Won’t complete even simple homework assignments No completará ni siquiera las tareas mas sencillas • • Has an upset stomach or a tension headache before a test If pre-existing conditions that can worsen: eczema, hives, psoriasis, etc. Tiene un malestar estomacal o dolor de cabeza antes de una prueba Si existen condiciones preexistentes que pueden empeorar: eczema, urticaria, psoriasis Unable to sleep days before test and/or night before test Incapaz de dormir días antes de la prueba y / o la noche antes de la prueba Lacks motivation Does not believe they can pass the test Calls themselves “stupid” or says “I’m dumb” Falta de motivación No cree que pueda pasar la prueba Se dice "estúpido" o dice "soy tonto" a simismo. How parents can help their child when stressed due to a major test? Como pueden los padres ayudar cuando su hijo esta estresado por una prueba? Do provide a quiet, comfortable place for studying at home and Proporcionar un lugar tranquilo y cómodo para estudiar en casa Make sure that your child is well rested on school days and especially on the day of a test. Children who are tired are less able to pay attention in class or to handle the demands of a test. Asegúrese de que su hijo esté bien descansado en los días escolares y el día de la prueba. Los niños que están cansados son menos capaces de prestar atención en clase o para tomar una prueba. Do help your child avoid test anxiety. Test anxiety is worrying too much about doing well on a test Ayude a su hijo a evitar la ansiedad de la prueba. La ansiedad de la prueba es demasiado preocupante como hacer bien en una prueba If your child worries too much about taking tests, you can help to reduce the anxiety by encouraging your child to do the following things. Make sure that you understand what material the test will cover. When you get the test, read the directions carefully before you begin work. You can always ask your teacher to read the directions again. If you don't know the answer to a question, skip it and go on. Don't waste time worrying about one question.
