Black History Month is an annual observance to remember and honor the
countless contributions made by African-Americans throughout history.
Nationally recognized as a month long celebration, Black History Month
spotlights contributions made by African-Americans in medicine, science,
literature and many other facets of American culture.
American Heart Association – Wear Red Day – February 3, 2017
Why Go Red? Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year,
killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. Fortunately, we have the power to
change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with
education and action.
To help raise awareness, the national movement of “Wear Red” day was started as a
reminder to every one of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
Bane students and staff are encouraged to wear RED on this special day to
show our support for the cause.
Bus Driver Appreciation Week February 6 – 10, 2017
Each year we recognize the efforts of the wonderful bus
drivers who transport our children to and from school
and other school related events.
At Bane, we want to make sure our drivers know just
how important they are to us. Please join us in thanking
them by offering our words of support and appreciation
for all they do every day of the school year!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED EACH WEEK:
Bane moms and dads – whether you can offer a little or a lot of
your time, we need you!
Our Parent Volunteers meet every Wednesday morning at 9:00
a.m. in the cafeteria to learn about the latest of what’s going on at
Bane and to lend a hand with projects and as class helpers. Can’t
be here on Wednesday mornings? We could use your help on
other days too! Let us know what days you are available and we’d
be happy to work around your schedule!
What are the different types of tests given and what do they mean?
DPM stands for District Progress Monitoring. For science, it feels like a normal unit test: same time limits (60 minutes
for 2nd and 3rd, 75 minutes for 4th and 5th), and approx. same amount of questions. Unlike the unit tests, however,
that only cover the most recent unit of study, 3rd and 4th grade DPMs are cumulative, meaning that they cover
everything that has been taught up to that point. 2nd Grade DPMs 2 & 3 are not cumulative, only covering the topics
in between each DPM.
A benchmark, however, is a test that looks and feels more like STAAR (more questions, 4 hour time limit, etc.). This is
like what we just had with the 4th writing and 5th reading benchmarks. These are usually what we call "shut down
days", meaning, no visitors, lunch schedule changes, etc. Only 5th grade has a science benchmark since they are the
only grade with Science STAAR.
STAAR is the standardized test in the state of Texas that will assess the knowledge and the skills of students in
elementary and secondary school classes from grade 3 to grade 11. These are also “shut down days” for our school,
meaning no visitors on those days and lunch schedules are changed to accommodate the needs of testing students.
We encourage parents to attend our information meetings, schedule a conference with your child’s teacher, or contact
the school if you have any questions regarding testing.

How parents can help their child when

 Do provide a quiet, comfortable place for studying at home and
 Make sure that your child is well rested on school days and especially on
the day of a test. Children who are tired are less able to pay attention
in class or to handle the demands of a test.

Do help your child avoid test anxiety. Test anxiety is
worrying too much about doing well on a test

If your child worries too much about taking tests, you can help to reduce the anxiety by
encouraging your child to do the following things.



Make sure that you understand what material the test will cover.
When you get the test, read the directions carefully before you begin work. You can always ask your
teacher to read the directions again.
If you don't know the answer to a question, skip it and go on. Don't waste time worrying about one
question.
