JUNE (SUMMER) SOLSTICE – Monday, June 20th JUNE 2016 MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD As we near the end of the 2015-2016 term of office for the current Board of Directors, it almost feels like New Year's Eve where we reflect on the accomplishments of the past year and make New Year's Resolutions.... and party and celebrate! The Village has transformed from a group of individuals not entirely trusting the process or knowing what is going on to a 'community' that has fought the fight, become stronger, better informed, more involved and proud of where we stand today. The gate is replaced, the roads are paved, the lift station serviced and sewers flushed; signage is mostly installed; common areas painted; the Village well groomed; site map installed (although still to be repaired); mailboxes settled; communication via minutes, group mail, Village Voice and email is current, informative and accessible; bulletin board temporarily installed at FCN visitor parking area; subleases completed; the CFEA is in action; and mainly, Village residents seem to be enjoying their homes and fellow residents in a spirit of togetherness. Still some unresolved issues, yes....but they are fewer and fewer. The last Board of Directors meeting involving the current Board will be held on Tuesday, June 21st, 2016 at 7:00 pm at the Clubhouse. Coming up is the AGM on June 28th to be held at 7:00 pm at the Sardis Community Church, 45625 South Sumas Way. The AGM packages were either hand delivered by the EVHC Board of Directors or mailed by June 6th. If any residents have questions, please direct your emails to [email protected]. These questions will be answered either individually or addressed to all residents prior to or during the AGM depending on the nature of the query. That was the good news....now the not so good news. The Board of Directors, Committees and Residents are still grappling with solutions to some ongoing problems: RUST STAINS - The Property Manager, Greg Flack is working with our lawyer, Delwen Stander and the adjuster from Transformations' insurance company to do an assessment of our rust stains. A report will be forwarded to the Village when the assessment is completed. DOG RUN - We have just received an email from our head lease holder, Mark Perry, that although the long promised dog run in the area west side of the Clubhouse may be created for a short period of time, it will at best be temporary as Platinum 3 is under construction, and at worst, will not happen at all. This leaves the Village with the problem of where pets can do their business. Pets must not use other resident's lawns or the common areas to relieve themselves. Of particular note using the roundabout and side gardens makes it unsafe and unhealthy for the Social Committee to post their notices and for Transformations to service the area. This leaves one’s own backyard or transporting the pet outside the complex. The pets find this a difficult solution, but unfortunately our complex was not designed with space to allow for a dog run on the premises. Owners using the common areas as toilets for their pets may be held responsible. RATS - A homeowner has recently had to have 'Pest Detectives' come to their home to set up a program of rodent removal from their crawl space. The company did say that bird feeders have definitely been found to contribute to attracting rodents to the area. It is noted that most residents have considerately stopped putting out seeds to support the attempt to curtail the rodent population visiting our homes, and we thank you for your cooperation. FRONT ENTRANCE TRAFFIC - Sadly, this is an ongoing issue. We still have some residents making short cuts to the left from Camden to exit the gates, going left from Foxridge North at roundabout to enter Camden, going left at roundabout from gate to enter Foxridge North. Hopefully, it won't take a serious accident before those residents get it right! From a security perspective, we would remind residents to not let strangers follow them through the enter gate, and wait for the gates to close after exiting so that cars cannot enter the Village through the exit gate. Luckily, the above issues are all solvable with just a little consideration and thoughtfulness on the part of each of us. Wishing you all a Happy Summer, The Board of Directors Englewood Village Homeowners Corporation FACT 1: History of Father’s Day The original Father's Day is thought to have been founded by Sonora Dodd in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Sonora and her five siblings were raised by their singleparent dad. She thought that since there was a Mother's Day, there should be a day to honor fathers as well. Around the World Here are some dates when the day is celebrated in different countries: * * * * * * Russia - February 23 Denmark - June 5 Brazil - Second Sunday of August Australia and New Zealand - First Sunday of September Egypt and Syria - June 21 Indonesia - November 12 Fun Facts about Father's Day * Sonora initially wanted the day to be on her dad's birthday which was June 5th, but the preachers needed more time after Mother's Day to write their sermons, so the day was moved back to the third Sunday in June. * There was a movement in the 1930s to combine Mother's Day and Father's Day in to Parent's Day. * Around $1 billion is spent each year on Father's Day gifts. * For many dads, they consider being a father the most important job they have. FACT 2 Englewood Village Irrigation Roy Lyonnais (our Volunteer Irrigation Controller in Chief) would like to pass on this information to those who appreciate being kept informed: 1. Watering is for 1 hour. 2. The Front Entrance, Foxridge North and the first two houses on each side of Camden Drive are watered every Wednesday and Saturday anytime between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM. 3. The rest of the village is watered every Thursday and Sunday anytime between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM. FACT 3 June Solstice in Chilliwack, B.C. is on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 3:34 PM PDT Facts About the Summer Solstice 1. The June Solstice is also called the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s the longest day of the year in terms of daylight. This year it occurs on June 20, 2016. 2. Solstice comes from the Latin word sol, meaning ‘Sun’ and sister, meaning ‘to come to a stop or stand still’. On the day of the June Solstice, the sun reaches its northern-most position, as seen from the Earth. At that moment, its zenith does not move north or south as during most other days of the year, but it stands still at the Tropic of Cancer. It then reverses its direction and starts moving south again. 3. Even though most people consider June 21 as the date of the June Solstice, it can happen anytime between June 20 and June 22. June 22 Solstices are rare – the last June 22 Solstice in UTC time took place in 1975 and there won’t be another one until 2203. 4. The earliest sunrise of the year doesn’t happen on this day. The earliest sunrise takes place days before the June Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also not usually the hottest day of the year. That usually comes a few weeks or sometimes a month after the Solstice. This is because it takes time for the oceans and landmasses to warm up, which allow for higher air temperatures. This phenomenon is called the delay or lag of the seasons. 5. The June Solstice is the only day of the year when all locations inside the Arctic Circle experience a continuous period of daylight for 24 hours. 6. The June or Summer Solstice is celebrated around the world. Many cultures celebrate the day with feasts, picnics, dance and music. SECURTY COMMITTEE The Security Committee would like to say thank you to everyone who attended our recent Emergency Preparedness Meeting. We participated in excellent “hands on” activities! Who knew fire suppression could be so challenging! Some of the positive comments included: • “I went home and sorted out my garage and removed items that should not be there!” • “I went out and purchased one or more fire extinguishers now I know what type to have in my residence.” • “I now know what to look for when deciding whether to enter a building after an earthquake has taken place.” We are fortunate to have such an experienced educator in Jim McDonald from the Chilliwack Fire Department. Mr. McDonald has truly experienced disaster preparedness first hand all over the world. What a wealth of knowledge he possesses. If you were not aware, Mr. McDonald does presentations for us on his own time without compensation! We are grateful to those of you who have come out to support our efforts here in the Village. Preparedness helps make us a stronger community. We will have another “hands on training” on first aid skills using what you have in your home to use in times of emergency. Stay tuned for a date soon! Our final activity will involve an actual “mock disaster” where we put all of the skills we have learned into practice. LANDSCAPING COMMITTEE The Green Thumb Information post! Here we are again enjoying the pleasures of summer... and along with that the joys of gardening. Our Village is looking better than ever - not perfect - yet, but improving to be sure! The trees and bushes are maturing, and they give us this wonderful feeling of being settled in... Many owners made the decision to purchase the 'Mulch Application' package... and because this proved to be such a success the same package will be offered again in the Fall... EVHC will notify the residents well in advance... Mulch is a great way to keep weeds down... and feed your plants. In this edition of the Village Voice, The Green Thumb is making an appeal for a few volunteers to help a person or two who are in need of beating back the black berry bushes that are climbing their fence and threatening to invade their backyard... It appears that Canada Lands are back-logged and are unable to do this for us, and suggested that we do it ourselves. Should you feel up to it I am sure these people would be very grateful and it will also be a great way to get to know more of your wonderful neighbours! If interested in helping out, please can contact, or knock on the door of: Lise Rohead 45892 South Foxridge Cr. 604 769 0208 SOCIAL COMMITTEE Coffee morning was well attended with 23 attending in May and slightly lower numbers in June. Card nights were held for both men & women. Ladies Card Night has seen an increase in numbers hosting three tables all playing different games, some old favorites & introducing some new games. You don’t need card playing experience to play just enthusiasm to learn new games & chat with your neighbours. The Car Rally & Poker Run was a big success with 24 cars registered & by all reports there is a desire to hold another one next year. Congratulations to trophy winners Laura & Gary Kenyon. May’s Happy Hour had a good attendance with 40 attendees. The 50/50 draw was very successful in contributing towards our share of a new Barbeque. The Garage Sale had 24 homes opening their garages to part with a wide variety of goods & treasures. Over 140 cars came through the gates, speaks well for our advertising. Warmer weather would have helped but all in all, another success. The After-Party was well attended even with the move to the club house due to the cool weather. Congratulations to Jim Duff the winner of the Meat draw. The Social Committee wants to thank all those who volunteered to help with the garage sale & for all the participants: sellers, buyers or patient home owners. Your feedback is essential to future success of this event. Please respond to the survey to be sent to you shortly. The last Happy Hour until September is June 24th “Here Comes Summer”. Three (3) meat draws are planned at this event. Coffee Morning & Happy Hour are on summer break until September. Card nights will continue in July & August. This is Dooley, our 2 year old Welsh terrier. He is on watch 24 hours a day, and lets us know whenever something is creeping around. He is hoping his raccoons come back for another visit so that he can prove to his humans he is earning his room and board. Brian and June Farquhar --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We would love to feature your pet for “Pet of the Month”. Please send all information to [email protected]. (For your pet, please send a photo and short write-up. If you do not know how to send photos, just let us know and we can arrange a photo shoot). Submitted by: Lise Rohead Here is one of my old time favorites because it is so easy to make: Easy Curried Chicken: 1/3 cup plain yogurt 3 tbsp. liquid honey 2 tbsp. Patak's curry paste (you can find it in all grocery stores around here) 2 tbsp. soy sauce 2 tsp Dijon grainy mustard 4 boneless breasts of chicken Mix all ingredients together in a bowl then pour over the breasts of chicken in a baking dish. Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes. Have a favourite recipe and are willing to share it? Just send it along to [email protected] to publish in a future Newsletter. Every month the Village Voice will run a contest open to all residents (except those on the Communications Committee) based on one of the themes – who am I, what am I, or where am I. Clues to the puzzle will be given every month until someone guesses correctly. If you think you know the answer, email Dale Dearden at [email protected]. The first correct answer received will win a small prize and, of course, bragging rights (your name and answer will appear in print in the following edition). You can send in as many guesses as you wish. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLUE #1 Do you know where I am? CLUE #2 I am nestled among places named for a fish, a war, and a chap from Minnesota. Note: entries should be specific - Canada/the U.S./Ontario, etc. will not do. If no correct answer is received, a third clue will follow in July’s edition. Please note that this must be only personal items, and not a commercial venture. The Village is mandated not to become involved in any way in the promotion or advertisement of commercially marketed products of any type. As requested by several residents, we have also added a "Recommendations" section. Please note that these are resident recommendations only. They are not Board approved or solicitations from corporations. If you have items that you are interested in buying, selling, trading, or a recommended service, please send a short description and contact information to [email protected] and we will add to the next newsletter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RESIDENT LOOKING FOR: Handyman wanted!
