Mr Steve Conner Mrs Julie Muller 16 March, 2017 Principal’s Message: This Newsletter finds us in Week 8 with only two weeks to go until the end of Term 1!!! Cross Country Due to the recent wet weather and the fact that our ovals are waterlogged, our Cross Country Carnival which was scheduled to be held this week has been moved to next Friday, 24 March 2017, commencing at 9:00am. We will monitor the weather next week and if the ovals remain waterlogged, we will need to look at other avenues for selecting students to attend the next level of competition. Swimming Carnival Our Year 3 – 6 Swimming Carnival will be held (weather permitting) on Friday 31 March 2017. National Ride2School Day National Ride2School day is tomorrow (again weather permitting). National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence It is also National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence tomorrow. Students and staff are invited to wear ORANGE to show support for this initiative. Please ensure all clothing is sunsafe. Uniform We are seeking the assistance from our families in ensuring that students arrive at school in the appropriate School Uniform. Some students are wearing accessories which are not suitable for School and create a safety hazard (extension nails, jewellery, unsuitable shoes, wrist bands, etc.). It would be appreciated if parents and carers can ensure that their children refrain from wearing these accessories to school. School Vandalism Over the last couple of weekends, the school has been targeted by vandals who have damaged a number of drinking taps and accessed our Landcare garden area pulling our seedlings out. This is extremely upsetting for our students and involves redirecting our School funds into repairing this damage instead of purchasing resources to support student learning. If you notice anyone acting suspiciously in our School grounds out of school hours or on weekends, please contact the Police. 17 March – Friday National Ride2School Day 17 March – Friday Bullying. Wear something orange on Friday 17 March to show your support – Bullying No Way! It doesn't matter whether it's physical, psychological or even cyber. Bullying is a concern that our school takes very seriously and is working to address. If you suspect your child is being bullied, you should make an appointment with the teacher or school principal to discuss your concerns. Some signs of bullying include: Loss of confidence Changes in eating or sleeping habits, possibly bedwetting Health problems such as headaches or stomach aches Unhappiness or mood swings with sudden temper tantrums Reluctance to go to school and changes in academic performance. What you can do: Talk with your child about school and keep the lines of communication open so children are more likely to confide in you. Encourage your child to feel okay to ask others for help and to keep their own safety in mind. Ensure your child knows how to report bullying and to ask you for help when needed. Report the incident to a teacher. Don’t try to sort out the situation yourself. Make sure you are modelling healthy behaviours to your child, especially in relation to conflict resolution and anger management. Help protect your child from harassment and cyber-bullying by closely monitoring internet use and installing free internet filters. For more information and ideas to understand and deal with bullying, visit the Bullying. Watch interactive animations on bullying situations and choose different endings to see what happens next. Stopping bullying starts with you If someone tries to bully you • ignore them, turn and leave • if you can, look them in the eye, tell them to ‘stop’ and then walk away • pretend you don’t care • go to places where you feel safe. If you have been bullied • talk to an adult (parent, teacher) you trust who can help stop the bullying • seek support from your friends • keep on asking for support until the bullying stops. If you see someone being bullied • if safe, do something to stop it • report it to a teacher • support the person being bullied. Since our last newsletter, a number of teachers have been growing their literacy understanding around writing. Eight teachers: Peta Bosomworth, Christine Halberstater, Helen Hanson, Judy Herold, Collette Louttit, Paula McNamara, Kathie Paskin and Ursula White, dedicated a Saturday attend a Seven Steps to Success Workshop in Rockhampton. to Seven Steps can be considered as one of the building blocks (steps) to allow students to gain confidence in their writing by stepping through the skills of writing, then putting it all together to become creative and confident writers. Celebrations from the classrooms Sizzling Starts Year 5/6 What if Life was a Story? by Darcy What if life was a story? From the smallest mouse to the largest castle? What if everything we’ve wished for would come to life? Three very special kids were about to find out. “So,” remarked Andrew to his two friends while walking home from school. “We should have a sleepover at my place.” “Yeah,” yelled Tom and Lilly excitedly. 2 hours later they all met outside Andrew’s house. They all stayed up late munching on Doritos and watching Pitch Perfect. “Man,” said Tom. “This is great.” Lilly then heard a creaking in the stairs, saw 2 legs, a torso and….. The Double by Hannah Fling! Splash! Plop! Little Red Riding Hood had picked off a piece of her finger nail and it fell into a crate of the witch’s magical citric acid. Then something weird happened, she had seen something like a mirror of herself. Suddenly she was dashing through the forest. “I think I’ve lost her,” she puffed. It was like there was a double, another one of her. “I don’t know how Gran is going to deal with another one of me,” she whispered to herself. Then a voice from the shadows muttered, “I don’t know either.” “Get away from me! Who are you and what do you want from me?” Little Red Riding Hood yelled. The next chapter for The Twits Year 4HH Mr Twits Revenge by Layla Mr Twit was in the old, wretched garden. He was soooo bored as there was nothing to do. “What am I going to do?” he yelled “What you always do. Be mean.” Said Mrs Twit, walking inside. “That’s it! I need to play the most horrible, the most terrible trick ever.” He cried with happiness. He went to the stinkiest, most grubby plant shop ever. “Okay, were is your old woman eating plant?” he yelled. The shopkeeper ran over to see what was going on. “What do you need, sir?” asked the shopkeeper. “I NEED AN OLD WOMAN EATING PLANT!” Mr Twit screamed. “You mean that plant over there?” asked the shopkeeper. “Yes, thank you,” replied Mr Twit. When Mr Twit got back to his old, stinky house he put the blue and red dotted woman eating plant at the end of the staircase that lead up to Mrs Twit’s bedroom. “I got something for you,” yelled Mr Twit, sweetly. “This better be good!” cried Mrs Twit. “Oh, it is!” replied Mr Twit. Mrs Twit came down the stairs and cried, “My golly gord, what is that thing?” “It’s for you,” smiled Mr Twit and threw her into the old woman eating plant. The house has gone, ballooning up! by Blake Early in the morning the Mugglle-Wump family woke up to two monkey children excitedly saying, “We’ve had an idea but we need to go to the shops first.” The Family snuck down the road to the shops. When they were at the shops they took one thousand hot air balloons. Once they were got home they prepared for the trick. The monkeys ran like a rocket up to the big, scary, decrepit old house. They climbed up the old worn- down bricks and attached ropes to the house. The next day, the foul Twits woke up flying in the clouds! Once they noticed where they were, those foul people screamed, “The house has gone ballooning up!” A little later, Mr Twit ran inside and began rummaging round and round for a knife. After some time, Mr Twit found one. Later, the foul Mr Twit climbed up the rickety bricks that the monkeys had also climbed, with a knife in his hand to cut the ropes. Once Mr Twit cut the final rope, the house came rapidly down! The roof flew off, with Mr Twit on it and landed in the wretched garden. The house fell upside down. The two Twits screamed, “YEAH!” Mrs Twit Gets Worse by Jack One day Mr and Mrs Twit, were outside sipping an ice cold drink of water from the freezer, when Mrs Twit yelled, “I’m going to go to Yeppoon State School!” “It’s the best school ever! Even in the whole entire disgusting world. That’s why people should go there. I got smart there!” snapped Mr Twit. Mrs Twit left in her big, ferocious car. She had leftover spaghetti in her pocket from yesterday afternoon. It smelt that bad that it shut down the big, hot metal car in the middle of nowhere. Mrs Twit had to begin walking. She had to walk for that long she grew a beard. Mrs Twit cried, “I’ve grown a decomposing, disgusting beard!” Finally, she found Yeppoon State School. (All that happened from Gladstone to Yeppoon). “Oh, no!” she cried, “For my first year I got Ns for everything, even the test for, what does twit mean?” After twenty one years at school, Mrs Twit got Ds for everything, followed by Es, then Cs and finally Ds for everything. Finally, Mrs Twit got As for everything. Mrs Twit graduated on her fifty-first year of school. Now she could return home. On getting home, Mrs Twit said, “I finished my school!” “Okay, what’s four times four?” asked Mr Twit. “Um.Um.Um. Twenty-one?” “No! Go back to school!” said Mr Twit. The Special Pie by Freyja Bang! Crash! Smash! Gun shots filled the air. Smoke flew up your nostrils. Mr Twit cackled, “I’m back and ready for war!” The crazy, horrid Mr Twit was outside trying to shoot some poor birds for a delicious, juicy bird pie! We all know Mr Twit very well - he was shooting the birds who flew into his garden. No! Mr Twit was then going to put toxin into some of the birds and give them to Mrs Twit for bird pie. Mr Twit went into deep thought, “What if there are some side effects? Maybe I’ll just put in my special ingredient, HOT SAUCE!!!!” Mr devilish Twit, had given the birds to the evil Mrs Twit to cook. She served them up on the cracked old plates. Mrs Twit took a bite. “Ahhhh, my mouth burns. It tastes horrible. Call an ambulance. You fool!!!” As Mrs Twit said to call an ambulance, Mr Twit did. He was very happy as the ambulance took her away because now he would have some peace and quiet. He was listening to the television, when on came a program called The Special Pie. Mr Twit laughed as he said to himself, “And that was a special pie.” ******************** Yours in Literacy, Yeppoon Literacy Team; Julie Muller, Chris Halberstater and Collette Louttit
