AMBULANCE SERVICE- Broccoli a n d B e a u t y Service within a radius of 25 miles of Chaumont Broccoli, according to Cornell's Food Marketing Bulletin, is a vegetable that rates as high in beauty as it does in food value. The rich green clusters of buds are decorative on any dinner plate—and they furnish us with more calcium than do most vegetables. Telephone Chaumont 36 Ray E. Peck - Ivan C. Becker CHAUMONT, N. Y. ). i Beauty, Talent Combined In Her Bi% Radio Debut A case of beauty and talent combined 'is that of Lucile Cummings, blond soprano, who will be featured with Edwin Steffe, baritone, in their first appearances on the "Telephone Hour" radio program, Monday night, July 25th. Both are American artists who have been heard in -numerous appearances on the concert stage and in opera, too. They will render both popular and classical selections on the program. A native of Corvallis, Oregon, Miss Cummings became a professional pianist before she turned to voice. Coming to New York, she was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera auditions in 1943. She has had long engagements at Radio City Music Hall and last season sang the role of "Clorinda" in the world premiere of "Auld Lang Syne" at the St. Louis Municipal Opera. Mr. Steffe, a native of Washington, D. C, is a direct descendant of William Steffe who in 1852 wrote the music for "Battle Hymn of the Republic." He was soloist at the Radio City Music Hall several years ago, toured with the Columbia Concerts Opera Company, and last season was soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony and the Houston Symphony. ' New and Better 'Phone A new telephone instrument that automatically adjusts the sound level to compensate, in part, for the distance between the telephone and the central office has been developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories. This new instrument, still in final stages of its development, not only provides better hearing and speaking qualities but an improved dial and volume control for its ringer. Several thousand of the new sets are to be manufactured this year for installation on a trial basis, including more than 1,000 in New York State. Even though almost all of the 400 separate parts of the new instrument are of entirely new design, the sets will be completely interchangeable with telephones now in use. And when the new set is connected with one of current design, users of both will benefit. Major objectives in designing the new telephone were to provide, as economically as possible, better all round service. Testing Size-'of Nickels The United States Mint in Philadelphia is using the nationwide telephone system as an invaluable ally in the production of its five cent pieces. Thus, reports a telephone man who took a trip to the Mint recently and observed the testing of the nickel coins. He saw workers grab handfuls of new nickels and drop them, one by one, into the nickel slot of a coin telephone located there. He was told that this is one of the tests for the correct size of the coin. If the nickels work in the telephone, they're judged to be all right. Broccoli won't keep long, so plan to use it soon after it's purchased. If you must store it overnight, wrap it in wax paper or put it in the refrigerator hydrator promptly. Incidentally, you will get about five servings from one large bunch of broccoli that weighs about 2 pounds.
