A note from our Artistic Director
Happy 2017! We can’t wait to kick off this our
anniversary year with a programme full to the
brim of the very best of drama, opera, comedy,
music, dance, film and family favourites. By
way of acknowledging the rich and varied
performance history of the building, we have
put together a programme for the year that,
like the building’s previous incarnations, bring
you the very best of the performing arts.
Continuing our dedication to family audiences
Spring sees the return of BrokenCrow’s
brilliant adaptation of children’s classic, The
Secret Garden, and Bosco is back with Hansel &
Gretel. Ballet Ireland also return following the
sell-out success of The Nutcracker, with their
beautiful version of Giselle and we even have
this year’s panto on sale which is Beauty and the
Beast, oh yes it is!
Some of the best loved writers of fiction
transfer from the page to the stage in May,
with adaptations of novels Private Peaceful
by Michael Morpurgo and Maeve Binchy’s
Minding Frankie. We are also delighted to bring
you a new play My Real Life from Artemis Fowl
creator Eoin Colfer. And because “dark nights”
are our least favourite thing, we’ve packed
the remainder of the calendar with top notch
touring shows such as Before Monsters Were
Made by 15th Oak, The Game by THEATREclub,
Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye by Jim Nolan and Have I
No Mouth by Brokentalkers, that give a flavour
of the best new writing and theatre-making
Wrapped around these highlights is the
that Ireland has to offer.

of former Taoiseach Jack Lynch. Local
heroes BrokenCrow premiere Levin & Levin, an
exciting new play by Aideen Wylde and West
End star Irene Warren returns to the stage in
superb form, with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tell
Me On A Sunday directed by Trevor Ryan.
Look out for Kevin Barry’s first stage play
Autumn Royal in January, a stunning operatic
reinvention of James Joyce’s The Dead by The
Performance Corporation in February, a witty
re-imagining of Willy Russell’s classic comedy
Educating Rita from Lyric Belfast in March, a
special anniversary production of Many Young
Men of Twenty by John B. Keane from the
Everyman Theatre Company in April, a classic
opera in the shape of Handel’s Radamisto
brought to us by NI Opera in May, and in June,
the unmissable Irish premiere of Futureproof
by remarkable Cork playwright, Lynda Radley.
We love great nights out and there is no
shortage of those this year with a whopper
season of comedy, music and spoken word
including Des Bishop, Keith Barry, Johnny McEvoy,
Jason Byrne, Isla Grant and Michael Harding. 2017
also sees the return of Faulty Towers: The Show,
Foil, Arms & Hog, The Everyman Sunday Songbook,
David McSavage and PJ Gallagher, first time
visits from stand-up star Al Murray, The Cavern
Beatles and the finest of Cork talent with comic
Ross Browne, The White Horse Guitar Club and
power ballad powerhouse Fist of Pure Emotion!
The Everyman building that we know and love today has a very special anniversary
this year having stood on MacCurtain Street for 120 years. Having first opened
its doors in 1897, the building is a jewel of late Victorian architecture. Having
opened as a music hall and later serving as a cinema, The Everyman is now one of
the leading presenting and producing theatres in Ireland, and is a vibrant cultural
hub for the people of Cork.
Each of the 12 months of this year hosts a special Everyman120 show – an event that
we feel encapsulates the best of the building’s past, present or future, as we continue
our mission of maintaining tradition and breaking new ground. You’ll see each of these
shows marked with our Everyman120 stamp demonstrating the flavour of offerings we
have for you, in this our anniversary year.
1897
On the 19th April 1897, Dan Lowrey opened the doors of the Cork Palace of Varieties.
Henry Brunton’s superbly designed Music Hall had a stained glass street canopy and
several licensed bars enrapturing the public with its ornate ceiling, and elaborate gilt
boxes on either side of the gently raked stalls and the curved and raked balcony. On
the opening night the Chairman Mr. John O’Connell said it was “without question the
prettiest, most commodious and best equipped place of entertainment in Ireland”.
1897 - 1920s
Variety programmes were initially the dominant attraction but
later came pantomime, opera and drama with touring repertory
companies visiting weekly from the UK and further afield. Artists
who performed at the Everyman in this period include Charlie
Chaplin, Marie Lloyd, Vesta Tilley, Sandow the strong man (pictured
here and famously featured on a Murphy’s advert of the time), Old
Mother Riley (Lucan & McShane), Seymore Hicks, George Formby,
Charles Coborn and Jimmy O’Dea.
1930s
Music hall and live performances gave
way to the new excitement of the time –
cinema with the theatre then known as
Cork’s Super Cinema: The Palace, ‘The House
with the Perfect Sound’ and for almost fifty
years The Everyman served as the city’s
major cinema.
1980s
Like many cinemas, the advent of video forced The Palace cinema to close down.
It wasn’t until 1988 that the Everyman Theatre Company, who had been presenting topquality drama in Cork at a variety of venues since 1963, took on the challenge of saving
the listed building for its original theatrical purpose and the theatre re-opened as The
Everyman Palace.
Current day
The Everyman continues to be a beacon of inspirational storytelling, providing
experiences which have the power to alter perspectives and make the heart beat a little
faster. We feel very fortunate to be the custodians of this beautiful, storied theatre and
are whole-heartedly committed to ensuring its survival for generations to come.

THE EVERYMAN AND KEVIN BARRY PRESENT
AUTUMN ROYAL
A NEW PLAY BY KEVIN BARRY
May and Timothy are looking after the father – the father has long since taken to
the bed. Their own lives are curtailed, closed down, and they’re not getting any
younger. Should they stay or should they go?
A dark, dark comedy, set on the northside of Cork city, Autumn Royal is a play about life
and death, love and hate, hysterical dependency, jealousy, rage, horror, and homicidal
notions – or, in other words, it’s a play about a family.
Kevin Barry is the multi-award winning writer of the novels Beatlebone and
City Of Bohane and the story collections Dark Lies The Island and There Are Little
Kingdoms. Autumn Royal is his first piece written originally for the stage. The Everyman is
proud to present and co-produce its world premiere.

It’s 1980, and Susan ‘Rita’ White has decided it’s time for a change.
A wise-cracking, no-nonsense hairdresser from the working-class streets of Belfast,

of woman who knows the difference between Shaw’s Bridge and George Bernard Shaw,
and so enrolls in an Open Learning course in English Literature where she meets
her tutor Frank – a lecturer from North Down who teaches at Queen’s – and begins her
journey of self-discovery.
Following its record-breaking run at the Lyric Theatre Belfast last year, this reimagined

BY JOHN B. KEANE
Charting the small-town days of Danger Mullaly, Peg Finnerty and other characters
in Hannigan’s pub as they see prospective emigrants off on the train, this play is

Woven throughout with ballads and songs, the play takes an often poignant and
frequently funny look at the harsh conditions that forced people to emigrate in the late
1950s, as well as the things that kept people at home.
In this anniversary year for our building, we are thrilled that our founders, Everyman
Theatre Company, will take on this classic play, first produced of course by that same
group, under the name of Southern Theatre Group in Father Mathew Hall in 1961.

BY MICHAEL MORPURGO
ADAPTED AND DIRECTED BY SIMON READE
Following on from the worldwide success of Michael Morpurgo’s Warhorse, Simon
Reade adapts and directs this stage version of Michael Morpurgo’s award-winning
book Private Peaceful. Private Peaceful is a timely reminder of the heroic sacrifices that were made by those involved
in World War 1. The story charts the life of a young soldier, Tommo Peaceful, a private who
faces firing squad for cowardice. As he sits in his cell waiting for sunrise, Tommo thinks
back to some of his fondest memories and reflects on the events that made him the person
he is today.

THEATRE ROYAL PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS
MY REAL LIFE
BY EOIN COLFER
Wexford man Noel has advanced MS and decides to end it all. While waiting for his
overdose to take effect he records an increasingly rambling message for his best friend.
Noel has apologies to make and messages to send. He has love in his heart and he wants
to declare it even if it’s already too late. Noel spends what is possibly the last hour of his
life re-living the highs and lows of the past forty years and, surprisingly perhaps, it’s not
all doom and gloom.
