The Everyman building that we know and love today has a very special anniversary this year having stood on MacCurtain Street for 120 years. Having first opened its doors in 1897, the building is a jewel of late Victorian architecture. Having opened as a music hall and later serving as a cinema, The Everyman is now one of the leading presenting and producing theatres in Ireland, and is a vibrant cultural hub for the people of Cork. Each of the 12 months of this year hosts a special Everyman120 show – an event that we feel encapsulates the best of the building’s past, present or future, as we continue our mission of maintaining tradition and breaking new ground. You’ll see each of these shows marked with our Everyman120 stamp demonstrating the flavour of offerings we have for you, in this our anniversary year. 1897 On the 19th April 1897, Dan Lowrey opened the doors of the Cork Palace of Varieties. Henry Brunton’s superbly designed Music Hall had a stained glass street canopy and several licensed bars enrapturing the public with its ornate ceiling, and elaborate gilt boxes on either side of the gently raked stalls and the curved and raked balcony. On the opening night the Chairman Mr. John O’Connell said it was “without question the prettiest, most commodious and best equipped place of entertainment in Ireland”. 1897 - 1920s Variety programmes were initially the dominant attraction but later came pantomime, opera and drama with touring repertory companies visiting weekly from the UK and further afield. Artists who performed at the Everyman in this period include Charlie Chaplin, Marie Lloyd, Vesta Tilley, Sandow the strong man (pictured here and famously featured on a Murphy’s advert of the time), Old Mother Riley (Lucan & McShane), Seymore Hicks, George Formby, Charles Coborn and Jimmy O’Dea. 1930s Music hall and live performances gave way to the new excitement of the time – cinema with the theatre then known as Cork’s Super Cinema: The Palace, ‘The House with the Perfect Sound’ and for almost fifty years The Everyman served as the city’s major cinema. 1980s Like many cinemas, the advent of video forced The Palace cinema to close down. It wasn’t until 1988 that the Everyman Theatre Company, who had been presenting topquality drama in Cork at a variety of venues since 1963, took on the challenge of saving the listed building for its original theatrical purpose and the theatre re-opened as The Everyman Palace. Current day The Everyman continues to be a beacon of inspirational storytelling, providing experiences which have the power to alter perspectives and make the heart beat a little faster. We feel very fortunate to be the custodians of this beautiful, storied theatre and are whole-heartedly committed to ensuring its survival for generations to come.
