Labelling requirements for Fresh Fruit and Vegetables under Commission Regulation (EU) No. 543/2011 Country of Origin (full name) is required for all fresh fruit and vegetable covered by the Regulation. Name and address of the packer and/or dispatcher must be stated for all packages. However for pre-packages the name and the address of a seller established within the EU may be indicated instead in close connection with the words “Packed for:” or an equivalent term. In this case the label must include a code representing the packer and/or dispatcher and the seller must be able to provide information regarding what the code means. In addition the following labelling requirements apply to individual products covered by the respective specific marketing standards: Product Apples Labelling of: Variety Required, however name of variety can be replaced by its synonym e.g. Katy to replace Katja. Class Required Size Must state minimum and maximum diameter / weight of the fruit in the pack, however for Class 2 the label may state the minimum diameter / weight of the fruit in the pack followed the words “and over”. Citrus Fruit Required for oranges but not required for lemons. Required Size code is required. This may be followed by the minimum and maximum size of the fruit or count. Satsumas and clementines must be labelled as such but don’t require variety to be stated. Variety must be stated for all other mandarins and their hybrids. Kiwifruit Optional Note: If a preserving agent / chemical post harvest treatment has been used it must also be stated on the label. Required Must state minimum and maximum weight of fruit in the pack. Can also optionally state the number of fruits. Lettuces, curled leaved and broad-leaved Endives Optional, however nature of the produce or commercial type must be labelled, if produce is not visible and must be labelled regardless for Little Gem. Class Required Size If sized, the size must be expressed as the minimum and maximum diameters (in mm) or minimum and maximum weights (in g) or as size code. Can also optionally state the number of fruits. Pears Required, however name of variety can be replaced by its synonym. Required Must state size, or for fruit packed in rows and layers, the number of units. If labelled by size the minimum and maximum diameters or minimum and maximum weights must be stated, however for Class 2 the label may state the minimum diameter / weight of the fruit in the pack followed the words “and over”. Strawberries Optional Required Not required. Sweet Peppers Optional, however “Hot” or equivalent must be stated where appropriate. Required If sized, the size must be expressed as the minimum and maximum diameters or minimum and maximum weights. Can also optionally state the number of units. Table Grapes Required Required For bunches of grapes weighing less than 75g the label must state “Bunches below 75g intended for single servings”. Tomatoes Optional, however commercial type must always be labelled for cherry or cocktail tomatoes. Required If sized, the size must be expressed as the minimum and maximum diameters. Traders presenting mixed product for sale should consult the full legal text for details. Exemptions - products not required to conform to the marketing standards: Products intended for industrial processing or intended for animal feed or other non-food use provided they are clearly marked with the words “intended for processing” or “for animal feed” or any other equivalent wording. Products transferred by the producer on his holding to consumers for their personal use. Products having undergone processing, trimming or cutting making them “ready to eat” or “kitchen ready”. Within a given production area, products sold or delivered by the grower to preparation and packaging stations or storage facilities, and products shipped from storage facilities to preparation and packaging stations. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is responsible for enforcing and ensuring compliance with the EU Marketing Standards for fresh fruit and vegetables.
