Mentoring Tips
Participate, don’t just discuss.
At times, especially in outside mentoring relationships where the new lawyer is not part of
the mentor’s firm, the new lawyer and mentor cannot always complete mentoring plan
experiences together. New lawyers are encouraged to participate in these experiences
without their mentor, and mentors should facilitate participation as much as possible. While
meeting with the mentor they can then discuss what the new lawyer did, questions the new
lawyer has, practical tips and insight the mentor has, and other relevant issues concerning
professionalism, civility, and ethics.
