are spoken here. We explore the distinguishing social, ethnic and linguistic characteristics of these US Spanish varieties, and will briefly examine the phenomenon
popularly known as ‘Spanglish’.

Spanish 487: Studies in Hispanic Linguistics: Afro-Hispanic Language

In this seminar, we examine major varieties of Afro-Hispanic language found in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America over the last 500 years. We will separate
legitimate forms of Afro-Hispanic expression from those that are the result of racist stereotyping, while exploring how contact with the African diaspora has had a
permanent impact on contemporary Spanish.
