WHAT’S ON IN
OCTOBER?
World Mental Health Day
The World Health Organisation
recognises
World Mental
Health Day
which was
held on 10
October as
an opportunity to raise awareness
of mental health issues around
the world and mobilising efforts in
support of mental health. The
theme for this year's World
Mental Health Day, set by the
World Federation for Mental
Health, was psychological first aid
and the support people can
provide to those in distress. Every
day, and all around us, people
often experience personal crises
which have an effect on their
mental wellbeing; we see this
daily in our industry and so fully
welcome any efforts to raise
awareness and get people the
support they need.
increase awareness of the
disease and to raise funds for
research into its cause,
prevention, diagnosis, treatment
and cure. The campaign also
offers information and support to
those affected by breast cancer.
National Cholesterol Month

Social
Prescribing
We agree that by working
together as a community more
people could have access to
the help or support that they
require.
Social prescribing is a way of
enabling care services to refer
people with social, emotional
and/or practical needs to
sources of support within the
community. This can be local
non-clinical services, charity
support or a range of services,
often provided by the voluntary
and community sector.
The awareness of social
prescribing and the benefits
that it can bring are becoming
more evident. Being a
Community Interest Company
we fully support the idea that a
community can help reduce
isolation and improve people’s
mental wellbeing.
An increasing problem in our
society is social exclusion and
we see this frequently. Social
prescribing can help to reduce
this which then has positive
reflections on wellbeing,
including loneliness and
improved mental health.

SPOTLIGHT ON…SWIVEL BATHER BATH SEAT
It is hard to underestimate the qualities of a nice warm bath or shower. However, many people suffering
with mobility issues are unable to get in and out of the bath or shower safely and
comfortably. Our swivel bather seat allows users to manage an over bath shower
with ease. The seat is a plastic coated steel frame which sits on the side of the
bath. The seat rotates, locking at four 90 degree angles, allowing smooth access.
It features side arms and drainage holes. For more details of our range of
shower and bathroom products please contact the equipment team on 01904
553058.
HEATHER’S HEADLINES – Heather Barden is Be Independent’s Chief Executive
This month we have been interviewing for our very own Occupational Therapist. We hope to soon be
able to provide our customers with the option to pay for their own assessment
without having to wait for a local authority appointment. The aim of our
Occupational Therapist will be to provide general and fall specific
assessments for our customers, helping them to
stay safe in their own environment. The OT can
then leave our customers with some
recommendation of equipment which will enable
their continued independence as quickly as
possible. The customer will then have the choice
of renting or buying any equipment. We believe
that by having an expert in occupational therapy
in the Be Independent team it will enhance our offering and continue to
help more people to maintain their independence in their own
surroundings.
