Graphic Organizer for Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice Purpose: To utilize content vocabulary to help students anticipate concepts and their relationships to one another in the reading material. The concepts are displayed in an arrangement of key terms relevant to the important concepts to be learned. This is meant to help students make connections between the new words they learn and the text, enabling them to remember them better. Directions: *The students have now read about half way through the novel. They have a general sense of the characters and what’s going on in the novel. *There are 2 variations of this, the first one is as follows: -We have been studying vocabulary words relating to the chapter, so the teacher gives the list to each student (words are found on the List-Group-Label activity), or puts the words on an overhead. Have the students decide where each word best fits-to which character would the word best relate-and then write the word with a line to the corresponding character that is listed. -Once all the students are finished with their words, they may either compare with a partner, or with a small group, or with the whole class. Either way, try to make sure that each student gets to voice one of their words and defend themselves as to their reasoning for putting it with that character. *The variation of this activity focuses on concepts instead of vocabulary. Below is the way the strategy would work: -I give the students a list, in same fashion as mentioned above, but this time with words having to do with the different literary terms, i.e. setting, plot, theme, characters, etc. -The students are to put the words in similar fashion as mentioned above also, but instead of the characters, the literary terms are listed, and the students are to connect the words I give them with the literary term that best fits. For example: the word is Pemberly and they are to connect that with the literary term-Setting. -Once again, students may share their work with others in the above mentioned fashion. Assessment: Teacher may evaluate the correctness of the connections the students made individually as well as their ability to work in a group to coordinate and collaborate on their answers and find the best fit.
