Mesabi Range Community & Technical College Student Senate Collects Signatures to Support Saving the Federal Pell Grant FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 23, 2011 Contact Information: Mesabi Range Community and Technical College Virginia Campus Senate President Alie Klaysmat, [email protected] and 218-749-7773. The leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives has proposed changes that will affect the eligibility requirements of the Federal Pell Grant Program cutting $2.3 billion from the program and potentially dropping 9,500 Minnesota students from Pell eligibility. In response to this, the Student Senate of Mesabi Range Community & Technical College Virginia Campus will be tabling to collect signatures in support of Pell Grant funding this week and next. This effort is part of a statewide campaign by the Minnesota State College Student Association (MSCSA) to gather petition signatures in support the Pell Grant. The Mesabi Range Community and Technical College Virginia Campus Student Senate is setting up computers in the Commons at the Virginia Campus on Wednesday, November 9 and Thursday, November 10, as well as, Monday, November 14 through Wednesday, November 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Student Senate is encouraging students, faculty, and staff of the college, as well as the general public to sign the petition opposing cuts to the Pell Grant. The petition is also available online at www.mscsa.org/pellgrant. Under the proposed cuts single students with no dependents would have to make less than $6,000, down from $9,339, a year to qualify for the Pell Grant. This amount is less than half of the current poverty line. Thirty years ago the maximum Pell Grant award covered about three-fourths of the costs of attending a four-year public college. Today, the Pell Grant covers only about one-third of the costs, putting a large burden of paying for higher education on the students of our country. The proposed cuts to the Pell Grant will have a great impact on the students of Minnesota and on students across the nation. Minnesota public 2-year college students already pay the third highest tuition in the country. The $2.3 billion in planned cuts to the Pell Grant program are projected to affect 9,500 students in Minnesota and two million students nationwide. These proposed changes would impact the amount of students our two-year colleges put out into the workforce, impacting communities statewide.
