Children Are Overcomers At Annual Awards Banquet
The theme for the Annual Children’s Awards
Banquet at the West Monroe Convention
Center was ”Be An Overcomer.” And that’s
exactly what the boys and girls at your
Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home are learning
to be.
The special evening of awards and recognition belonged totally to the children. Under the
direction of LBCH Director of Cottage Life,
Tommy Frost and LBCH Music Director, Judy
Walker, the boys and girls emceed, prayed and
performed through song, on handbells, flute,
piano and guitar. The talent these children possess was such a joy to witness.
“I believe we are among some of the most
talented and special children in the world,” stated Dr. Perry Hancock. “I am so proud of each
and every one,” he added.
Following a wonderful meal, very special
guest, Olympic medalist Hollis Conway spoke
to the children about his experience of “overcoming.” The youngest of seven children, Hollis
shared of struggles created by an often unstable homelife. At a young age he began to find
solace in athletics.
Through hard work and perseverance,
Hollis went on to be one of the best high
jumpers in the world, winning Olympic medals
in the high jump at the Seoul and Barcelona
games.
As Hollis passed his Olympic medals
for their achievements in academics, music and
drama, friendship and citizenship.
Following the sweetest rendition of He
Knows My Name and Jesus Loves Me by eight
year old Jessica of Love Cottage, the final
award of the evening was presented. This
award, The Lucile East Award for Courage is
presented to the child who has overcome many
obstacles over the past year. This year’s recipient of the Lucile East Award was the very
deserving Ryan L. of Grace Cottage.

who makes up the Louisiana Baptist Children’s
Home family. We are so proud of you. You are

explained how they too can overcome obstacles and reach goals through hard work and a
strong faith in God. “But remember,” he added,
“no Olympic medal or any other award comes
close to the importance of having a relationship
with Jesus Christ.”
The remainder of the evening was devoted
to performances by the children and the awards
segments.

Congratulations Class of 2008
a word from home
by Dr. Perry Hancock, President & CEO
We are so proud of our high school seniors. They have worked hard and
found great success this year. Please pray for Karilee, Carmen and Frankie
as they embark on their next life adventure.
Last night I sat in a football stadium with a few thousand others and
celebrated the high school graduation of our seniors from LBCH. I could
not have been more proud. Other children this week were honored at
their schools for various academic achievements, and last week we celebrated the successes of all our young people at the annual awards banquet.
Behind each recognition and accomplishment there is an incredible
story. It is the story of a child who has had to struggle with and overcome
some very difficult circumstances. It is the story of cottage parents who
encourage and support that child in so many different ways. It is the story
of teachers and tutors who challenge the child to do his best. It is the story
of pastors and Sunday School teachers who help that child understand
that she is precious and special and loved.

Dwight Maynard - A Young Man Of Many Talents
A Houma native, Dwight has enjoyed his sophomore
year at Neville and his time as a member of the Grace
Cottage family. Dwight is an energetic young man with
diverse interests and talents. Thomas & Reba O'Neal,
Grace Cottage parents, report that Dwight is always the
first one up every morning. His classes start at 7:30 so he
has to be at school earlier than the others, and his days are
packed with classes and extracurricular activities. Dwight is
"very self-motivated," which has helped him achieve academic excellence. Mr. O'Neal says Dwight often
seeks out the campus tutor, even though he is
already a straight-A student. In the recent
literary rally, he placed first in academics and civics at the district level and
fourth place in civics at the state
level.
Dwight enjoys acting and
recently performed in a school
production of "Macbeth." He
especially enjoyed working
with Carmen Harrington,
whom you met in an earlier
issue of HomeNews. Dwight
also enjoys serving as a
member of the varsity speech
team. A gifted pianist, Dwight
placed superior at his recital
where he played the "Prelude:
Carmen." At the LBCH annual
wards banquet, he played a duet
with Judy Walker, his music teacher.
Dwight has played piano since he was
12 and says that he has a preference for
classical music. He is always open to invitations to play for churches or other groups. Dwight
likes soccer and played a little in the past but admits he is
more into academics and the arts than sports. Even though
he loves the arts, his career goal is to someday be in a
position to help others and he feels he can do that
as a psychiatrist or a lawyer. Dwight is certain to be
awarded scholarships when he graduates, but he has not
started thinking about colleges yet.
At Parkview Baptist Church, Dwight enjoys being a part
of the youth activities. He really likes his youth pastor and
especially enjoys his Sunday night home group which is
currently studying Max Lucado's "John 3:16."
Mr. O'Neal says, "Dwight likes to help people and people are really drawn to him. He is always sensitive to others' feelings. He is a very likeable person, a good listener.
Many of his friends seek him out so they can share their
problems or get advice. I don't know anyone who doesn't
like him…. Dwight also gets more mail than anyone else in
the cottage!" Dwight has a rare quality that while he is a
great friend and gets along well with everyone, he doesn't
mind having time alone. He has learned how to balance his
time well, says Mr. O'Neal. The O'Neal's grandson is one of
Dwight's biggest fans, and it's fun to watch him run to
Dwight to be picked up or to sit in his lap. Mr. O'Neal teases that the girls like Dwight because he is so handsome.
Dwight came to campus with long hair. Shortly after his
arrival, he joined ROTC, a decision which led to a major
haircut, says Mr. O'Neal. But he adds that the new look
really fit Dwight, who is really very conservative, both in
opinions and in his dress.
Dwight will be returning to Houma as soon as school is
out, but he says the past nine months at LBCH have been
really good for him. The best part has been his cottage parents. He is really close to them and says, "They are great!"
He plans to maintain contact with them after he returns
home. While he was a little homesick when he first came to
LBCH, phone calls and visits with his mom made the move
easier. The hardest adjustment, Dwight laughs, was the
food! Mr. O'Neal jokes that Dwight quickly taught
the Grace Cottage family all about Tony
Chachere's and it has become an addition
to all their meals! Another memorable
event for Dwight was seeing snow for
the first time in his life. Although
there wasn't a lot, schools were
closed and the kids all had a
chance to enjoy the little flurries
that passed through the area.
An only child, Dwight
came to LBCH because, "At
home, I wasn't really happy. Me
and my mom had a lot of conflicts." During his time in Grace,
Dwight has learned a lot. Some
lessons were more practical,
such as vacuuming, dusting, and
laundry. But Dwight says with the
support of the O'Neals and Ms.
Tracy, "This time has made me a better person. I've had some time for myself
and was able to see the big picture…. It
really helped my mom and me connect more
and get through the issues we were going through."
Dwight is relieved that not only have he and his mother
worked out their differences, they've both learned skills to
help them in the future.
Like most young men his age, Dwight is looking forward to
driver's ed and finding a summer job. He is also excited
about being reunited with his mom and getting better
acquainted with his new, blended family. Thanks to LBCH
and the O'Neals, Dwight
is confident that the skills
he's learned will help him
wherever he goes and
whatever situations he
may face.

On June 6th and 7th, former Children’s Home residents
from all over America will return to our campus for the 2008
alumni reunion. Former residents will be reunited with individuals who literally became their brothers and sisters while living
at the home. Lifetime relationships were made and friends
became friends forever.
During the two-day celebration, alumni will be entertained
on Friday night by Rev. Dennis Swanberg, “America’s Minister
of Encouragement.” He does impersonations, he’s a humorous storyteller and motivator. This is great entertainment you
don’t want to miss.
On Saturday, the group will enjoy a concert featuring the
New Liberty Quartet. This is composed of four gentlemen from
the northeast Louisiana area. They are a wonderful southern
gospel group. You will truly be blessed by their performance.
If you are an alumnus of the Children’s Home, please don’t
miss this special time of reuniting and reminiscing. It’s going to

In Tribute...
This tribute is in memory of Mrs. Maggie Brown
Walton who passed away recently. She was one of the
finest Christian persons I have ever known. She was
reared in the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home and she
never did lose her love of the place and what she learned
there. We worked together many years in First Baptist
Church of Harrisonburg. She sang in the choir and was
always faithful in matters of stewardship. She was such a
faithful tither right down to the end of her life. Mrs. Maggie
raised a large family. They are a close-knit family and
really cared for her. She was a member of Fidelis Sunday
School Class and she certainly knew her Bible. Proverbs
31 is a picture of this dear lady.

Fond Memories of Family & Faith
A word from LBCH Alumni...

Knowing that the next
reunion at the Louisiana Baptist
Children’s Home is just weeks
away my mind is flooded with
memories of years spent there.
Also, thoughts of why and how I
arrived there come to mind.
Because our immediate family
was not able to care for my
brother, sister and me, we lived
with our grandparents who were
retired school teachers and
knew the foundation we would
need for success in life. When I
was twelve grandmother died
suddenly. Thankfully, we had
relatives in Monroe that were
familiar with the ministry of the
“Children’s Home” and made the
necessary contacts for us to be
accepted.
At LBCH I was able to continue my love for music by taking piano lessons and participating in the
choral programs at school, church, and home. Then it was off to Louisiana
College where I received my degree to teach choral music. I have just retired
from thirty wonderful years of teaching. I often wonder where I might be
today if caring relatives and the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home had not
been there for me. And now as the reunion time draws near I begin to wonder what dear friends will be in attendance. We share a bond unlike any
other. We will spend hours reminiscing, telling stories, laughing and promising to stay in touch until the next reunion. So I will take this opportunity to tell
my friends to email me and let me know that I can be looking forward to seeing you in June.
I have so many happy
memories of the 22 years at the
Children’s Home. I was so
blessed to have a mom and
dad that grew up in the Home
as children, adults and staff for
20 years. Since my brother
Buddy and I were born while
Mom and Dad were house parents, we were residents of
LBCH from day one of our
lives. Who could be luckier than
that? Although I didn’t live on
the campus during my preteen
and high school years, I spent
many nights and weekends at
the “big girls” cottage, doing
what “big girls” do. I went
everywhere they went. When
the Children’s Home bus left
the campus for school, movies
or any activities, I was on it with
the girls.
We were taught Christian values and morals, manners, the importance
of hard work, the consideration of others and their feelings, and knowing you
were loved and cared for. The strong Christian characteristics instilled in my
Godly parents while at the Home were passed on to Buddy and me. I can
now see these same traits in our son Steve Jones, as he passes them on to
his family.
Growing up with so many kids, seeing them daily at meal times..strong
bonds are formed. These are bonds that are never broken. Just think...if
those two little orphans, Frankie Stevens and Mamie Aaron, had not been
brought to the Children’s Home at eighteen months old and eleven years
old, and had not grown up in the Home, married and worked there, I would
not have had all the opportunities, experiences, friends and great memories.
Our God works in mysterious ways.

The LBCH has been a part of my life for the past 22 years. It started as a
place of refuge for my siblings and I, but quickly turned into a home. It is a
home that throughout the years has provided comfort, food, shelter, clothing,
encouragement, patience, kindness, acceptance and most of all love.
After graduating high school in 1999, I attended Louisiana College and in
May of 2003 graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. In April of 2004,
I married my husband and settled into my new role as a wife. I made the adjustment of settling into the role of a mother as Brent and I welcomed our first child,
Ryland, in October of 2006. After all of these years and through all of these
changes, I have continued to have the support, encouragement, and love of
the people and relationships that I made with and through the LBCH. In the
end, the most important thing I can say is that my family and I are more thankful and grateful than words could ever say.

La. Baptist Churches while they last! (cords included).
• Children’s Home speakers are ready and waiting to visit your VBS

Speaking schedules are limited and first come, first served!
• Free LBCH DVDs are available for use at your VBS
• VBSers are invited to go on a field trip to our Children’s Home campus in
