LOOKING AT LIFE GROUP
The group started this year with a quick look at some of the old ideas on Inheritance,
eg in Genesis 30 (I think), Jacob's attempts at breeding sheep with brown markings
is described.
We then looked more closely at the work of Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk who
studied inheritance in garden peas in the 1880s. Amazingly due to his accurate
scientific methods and result collection the basis for our modern knowledge of
Heredity was laid down. This led on to finding out how his theories are actually
brought about in living cells. As an example of Inheritance in History we examined
Queen Victoria's family tree to find how haemophilia was spread throughout the
Royal Families of Europe, yet ours managed to escape.
I would like to thank all members of the group without whose enquiring minds and
regular attendance Tuesday afternoons would be very boring.
