You’ve seen him as Dr. Craig Wesley in
Days of Our Lives. You’ve seen him in
movies and Broadway shows. Now you
can see Kevin Spirtas singing Broadway
greats live at the Lincoln Parish Library on
Tuesday, May 2 at 6:00 p.m. in the Library
Events Center. This event is free and open
to the public, so bring your soap opera
friends and your Broadway lovers alike for
this entertaining night of song!
Kevin Spirtas is a 25-year veteran of acting on Broadway, in
films, and on television. He is most recognized around the
world as the dashing and frolicking Dr. Craig Wesley on NBC
Television’s Days of Our Lives. In 1999, Soap Opera Digest
nominated Spirtas for Best Villain, and TV Guide touted him
for a Best Supporting Actor Emmy. He not only achieved critical
acclaims for his acting, but he also became a huge fan favorite
in the process. In February 2000, Spirtas had the delightful
opportunity to play his Days role of “Dr. Craig Wesley” opposite
Matt Leblanc’s “Dr. Drake Ramoray” on NBC’s Friends.
Most recently, Spirtas starred Off-Broadway in the critically
acclaimed new play LOADED, and award winning musical
SILENCE! Before that, he starred as “Corny Collins” in the Las
Vegas Production of HAIRSPRAY, and in September 2003, he
was cast as Hugh Jackman’s standby in the smash hit musical,
THE BOY FROM OZ, another tribute to Spirtas’s high octane
talent. Spirtas also appeared on Broadway in role of Mike Costa
(“I Can Do That”) in A CHORUS LINE and the role of Warren

Between the Lines - May 2017
~ Children’s Corner ~
We’ve hopped through spring, and summer is almost
here! We have several celebrations in May. May 1,
2017 is May Day. Miss Pam will tell about the history
of Mayday, and we will sing and dance around the
Maypole in the Lincoln Community Room.
May 1-5th is National Children’s book
week, and we will have a different trivia
question contest every day. May 13,
2017, Miss Caitlin will help the children
make Mom’s day very special. On May
25th, Miss Shelly will have a special
Memorial Day Craft-ernoon project.
Our 2017 Summer Reading Program
theme is Build a Better World, and we
will discover all kinds of ways we can
make a difference this summer. Our kickoff will be held May 25, 2017 beginning at
10 am in the Lincoln Parish Library Events
Center. Sign up and begin your summer
fun. We will have our Summer Reading
Program calendars ready by May 12, so you can see
what’s coming. Between Harvey Rabbit, Magician
David Le Boeuf, the Bricks 4 Kidz people, the
Monday
gymnastic people, and Hampstead Stage Company,
it’s going to be an awesome summer!
Help your children do well in school next year by
keeping good reading habits this summer. By
participating in the Lincoln Parish Library
Summer Reading Program, you can combat
what is known as the summer slide. Summer
slide is when students get out of thinking about
the rules of reading and letter combinations,
and it will often take the first three weeks of
school to get back on track. By reading over
the summer, not only will they earn some
cool prizes, but they can also get a good
jump on their Accelerated Reader points for
next year.
Be on the lookout for our Build a Better
World weekly time, starting May 31!
See you in the Children’s
Department!

Red Rising
by Pierce Brown
Ragan says:
Humanity has moved out into the stars and
has divided itself into a caste system based on
colors. Golds are at the top of the pyramid, the
ruling elite. Reds make the base of the pyramid
where they provide hard labor and serve like
slaves. Darrow is a Red living underneath the
surface of Mars in a colony that is working to
terraform the planet. The rulers who govern
his colony are harsh and oppressive, treating
the people poorly. After Darrow’s wife is
executed and lies are uncovered, Darrow goes
undercover as a Gold to cripple them from
within. Part space opera, part dystopian, this
first book in a series is a perfect action-based
story that blends drama and characterization
well. Fans of the Star Wars saga and Game of
Thrones series will be hard-pressed to put this
book down.
A Fierce and Subtle Poison
by Samantha Mabry
Kris says:
This is a great book set in a lush and tropical
Puerto Rico. I have vacationed there once so

to read about the historical landmarks was
fantastic! The Star crossed teen characters are
interesting, the setting is amazing and the story
very well executed. I loved the legends and
the folklore of the Caribbean
culture in this story. It gives a
magical element that makes
this a perfect “escape” read.
Infected
by Scott Sigler
Robin says:
Science fiction book about
people getting infected by
parasite. It turns ordinary people into raving,
paranoid murderers who inflict brutal horrors
onto family, friends, and themselves. Horror,
suspense, and techno thriller. It’s a relentlessly
paced novel. You won’t want to put it down.
Uprooted
by Naomi Novik
Rebecca says:
I’m not sure why it took me so long to read this
book because it’s got everything that I like.
Nature, Eastern European folklore, adventure,
courtly intrigue, strong female protagonist,

and just the right amount of romance. There
is a wizard lord named the Dragon who takes
care of the nearby villages and is really only
seen when he comes to collect one young
woman every ten years. Agnieszka and the
rest of the villages are positive that the Dragon
will choose her best friend, Kasia. How could
you not? Kasia is brave, witty, graceful, and
a great cook; Agnieszka is none of those
things. However, for both Agnieszka and
the Dragon this is not how things turn out.
Recommended for fantasy and folklore
lovers!
The Last Unicorn
by Peter S. Beagle
Jeremy says:
It’s been many years since I first read this
novel. Thanks to a recent LPL GoodReads
Reading Challenge and a new unicorn novel
by Beagle, In Calabria, I decided to revisit it. I
can honestly say that I am quite smitten with
it! Beagle has a gift for unique characterization
and word combination. A classic in it’s own
right, The Last Unicorn is core fantasy reading
and an absolute delight for anyone who loves
colorful writing, mythical creatures, and the
art of good storytelling. And after you’re done,
check out the beautifully adapted graphic
novel and/or the 80’s classic Rankin and Bass
animated film for which Beagle wrote the
screen play.

Black Panther: A Nation under our Feet
by Ta-Nehisi Coates
Nick says:
Black Panther Vol.1: A Nation Under Our
Feet is the highly anticipated comic debut
of acclaimed journalist and author Ta-Nehisi
Coates. Marvel announced his involvement
as author for the series not long
after he received the MacArthur
“Genius Grant” and, as a result,
expectations were high for
this endeavor. In this book the
people of Wakanda are in a state
of unrest and dissatisfaction with
their king T’Challa, the Black
Panther. Corrupt chieftains and
power-mad villains have made
Wakanda the victim of much
destruction and violence, and the Wakandans
want to see answers to these problems.
But what they’ve received from their king
is considered unsatisfactory, causing some
rogue agents to rise up and take matters into
their own hands to stoke the fires of unrest
and rebellion that burn within the Wakandan
people. T’Challa the Black Panther discovers,
though, that some of this manipulation has
occurred through unnatural means, stirring the
king into action to find the perpetrator all the
while struggling to discover his identity and
what it means to be king.

May Reading Prompt:
Award-Winning Audio
Spring has sprung, patrons!
And there is no better time
to be outside doing stuff.
However, it can sometimes
be kind of difficult to read
a physical print book while
doing something else, like
walking my dog. So, to get the
most out of the spring time
weather and to fit in some
great books, this month our
challenge is to listen to a book
that has either won or was
nominated for an Audie! You
can find a list of the nominees
and winners for the past
twenty years here at https://
www.audiopub.org/winners.
For this challenge, I’m
going to listen to 2010’s
finalist for the Distinguished
Achievement in Production
award, Graceling by Kristin
Cashor, narrated by David
Baker and a full cast. I
always love a good full cast
audiobook production!
Let me know what you’re
reading and what you’re
doing while listening. Happy
listening!

Dear LPL Readers Club members,
Sometimes, it can be hard to come up
with an interesting title to read next,
even when you have a goal of how
many books you want to read for the
year. If you’ve never participated in
Summer Reading, you could be amazed
at how having different topics to read
can make a difference! During Adult
Summer Reading at our library, we
take some of the work out of deciding what to read by giving
you our Summer Reading game board. This year, our Summer
Reading theme is Build a Better World, and our topics are all
about making our world a better place, both for ourselves and
others. For each game board item, you will have a subject area
related to Building a Better World. Each item you complete,
you get a prize. And to make it even easier, we choose books
that will fit the different subject areas and keep them handy on
special book displays throughout the summer so a book that will
work will always be in reach. Now, all you have to do is sit back,
relax, and enjoy a new fulfilling read that fits both the Summer
Reading program AND your year-long reading goals for LPL
Readers Club. It’s a win-win for everyone!
