Course of Global and Inter-cultural Studies
Introduction
Globalization is the subject of the studies of this course. Until recently social sciences were based
on nation-states which were the basic frame of modern societies. The process of modernization in
every society necessitated cultural as well as political integration as a nation. The dynamism of world
history developed through cooperation and competition among nation-states. But after the 1970s,
nation-states began to evolve and merge into a new global order. Capital, goods, labor and even
culture began to move more rapidly across the borders of nation-states. The age of globalization
opened its door. This process may lead to an age of universal culture. But it is also true that it may
contain much social friction.
In this course, the curriculum is divided into three fields:
1) Studies of globalization which includes "globalization and contemporary societies", "globalization
and international relations" and "globalization and social movements".
2) Globalization and local communities which includes "globalization and local communities" and
"globalization and local cultures".
3) Globalization and Japan which includes "Japan in the process of globalization" and "globalization
and social problems in Japan".
