Pisciculture Schedule

Welcome from
the President
Since the very first Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) in 1876, competitions have formed the founding cornerstone of the
state’s biggest annual event.
At the very first exhibition 140 years ago, 1,700 entries were received in 650 classes competing for trophies, cash and
prizes with the largest prize worth 25 guineas or $44 in today’s currency.
Today the Ekka receives on average, more than 21,000 entries across 13,000 classes in 48 categories competing for
a total prize pool of more than $530,000.
For 142 years, the RNA has been dedicated to championing and celebrating agriculture and the essential role it plays
in the everyday lives of Queenslanders from the food we eat to the clothes we wear.
The Ekka is the ultimate showcase of the best of the best – a chance for our valued exhibitors to be rewarded and
recognised for their dedication and perseverance in achieving excellence.
Last year almost 4,000 exhibitors travelled from across the country for their chance to win one of our coveted blue
ribbons, including 1,330 new competitors.
From stud bulls to fruit cake to cookery and poultry, our competitions form the traditional heart of the show and continue to expand and grow in popularity.
The 2016 Ekka featured increases in entries in many categories including piscicultre, cookery, creative art and craft,
drawing and photography, canine, poultry, woodchop and sawing, dairy goats, sheep and apiculture.
This year, the RNA will celebrate the 140th staging of our iconic show which has attracted more than 30 million people through the gates to celebrate the country coming to the city each August since 1876.
The RNA is honoured to stage the Ekka on behalf of the community each year and we are steadfast in our commitment to champion and celebrate agriculture.
Good luck and we look forward to seeing you at the 2017 Royal Queensland Show.

Individual entries: The entrant must have spawned, raised and
entered the fish personally.
OTHER VARIETIES
Team entries: Team entries are the product of two people
working closely together in different fishrooms to produce a line
of bettas. Teams usually involve one person breeding the fish
and then giving the young, unsexed juveniles to another person
who will rear them in their fishroom to showable size and
training. Teams are not people who purchase or are gifted a fish
from another breeder.
Family entries: All family members share the same fishroom,
which is located at one address. All dutues are shared and each
member is equally involved in the bredding and raising of the
fish. If two family members work from the same fishroom, but
maintain separate lines and all fishroom duties are carried out
independently, then they must enter as individuals.

This class is for those people who see things slightly
differently. There are no restrictions as to what may
be used in this class but remember that the welfare
of the animal is paramount. This is outlined in the
judging criteria, so remember your tank must be a
viable environment for the species you are going to
put in it. Aquaria to be no longer than 60cm, no
wider than 45cm and no taller than 38cms. If the
tank is smaller than this, we recommend building a
frame to hide the background of the display
structure. A larger tank may be used by
arrangement with the Stewards.
