F.O.S.S. in First Grade
Return on Investment Continued...
Submitted by Joseph Waters
Submitted by Superintendent Wayne Weber
First Grade students in Mr. Waters’ room experiment with sound using a variety of items;
rubber bands, wooden blocks, craft sticks, plastic cups, and pencils, as part of the Sound
& Light unit in F.O.S.S. science kits. This is one of three units taught in first grade in
science. Plants & Animals and Air & Weather are the other topics taught throughout the
year. All units have built in experiments that give students hands on experience while
building, creating, and exploring the scientific process.
In last month’s article, I wrote about looking at the return on investment taxpayers receive
in this district and I stated that I would continue this look in future articles. I also asked
for feedback regarding your experiences within the district regarding what you see as a
return on investment.
Natalie Groeschl uses a craft stick,
rubber bands, and a plastic cup to
create sounds.
Maryn VanZon has her own designs
for creating sound while using craft
sticks and plastic cups.
Some of you have taken me up and shared recent district successes that have impressed
you. I’ll share a few of them. As I type this article, our Laconia Dance Team is headed
to state competition in La Crosse after qualifying this past weekend. Our high school
girls and boys basketball teams are both 1st in conference, and the girls are ranked
3rd in the state and the boys are ranked 6th. Our high school wrestling team is ranked
2nd in conference and recently finished 1st in both the Waupun and Green Bay West
tournaments. Rosendale third through fifth graders performed beautifully at their concert
singing songs about growing up and the values, lessons, and morals we learn along the
way. Our Rosendale fifth/sixth grade math team finished 2nd and the seventh/eighth grade
team finished 3rd in their recent competition. A number of Rosendale and Brandon eighth
grade families are excitedly preparing for the arrival of their German exchange students
and then their subsequent trip to Germany in April.
While none of these items would be measured on our district report card, these successes
and opportunities do contribute to the total picture of the district and how people feel
about our schools and community. The district’s academic success is no secret. I hope our
extracurricular successes are just as widely known.
Your investment helps the district provide these academic and extracurricular opportunities
to our students. One way many taxpayers view their investment is to look at the district
mill rate. The mill rate is determined by taking the Board adopted tax levy and dividing
the total equalized value (fair market value of all properties in the district). The mill rate
is the rate which one dollar per thousand dollars of equalized valuation will raise property
taxes. For example, on mill on a $100,000 property would yield $100. Our district mill
rate this year is $8.52. That’s $1.45 less than the state average of $9.97 and $1.40 less than
the area average. I believe you are getting a great value for your dollar.
This information and more is available on our school website www.rbsd.k12.wi.us under
the School Performance Dashboard link. We’ll continue to add comparative data to our
website to help you get a view how our district is performing from a variety of views. As
always, I welcome feedback on what you see as returns on your investment or questions
you may have regarding your investment. Please feel free to contact me at webeway@
rbsd.k12.wi.us or 872-5317. I thank those of you who took time to share your views with
me and look forward to hearing from more of you this month.

Mark Your Calendars!
Submitted by LHS Counselor Diane Raue
The start of second semester is a good time to take
care of some important tasks. Mark your calendars
for these upcoming deadlines or events:
Current 8th graders and parents: Thank you for
attending the course selection night. We hope that
the information was informative in terms of courses,
earning credits, and requirements for high school
graduation. A reminder that March 6th is the deadline
for submitting any course selection changes for next
year.
Freshmen: March 8th is your deadline for submitting any course selection changes
for next year.
Sophomores: March 6th is your deadline for submitting any course selection changes
for next year.
Juniors: Did you receive your letter regarding the ACT? February 28th and March
1st are very important days for Juniors. You will all be taking the ACT Plus Writing
and the ACT Workkeys at school on those days. This is a great first step in your postsecondary career. There is no charge for you to participate in either assessment. You
are also invited to be our guest and stop in the cafeteria both mornings for a quick
breakfast from 7:30-7:50 am prior to testing. Testing will conclude by 12:45 each
day.
Are you interested in any of the UW System Colleges? This spring they are piloting
a service where they will send timely and fun texts about preparing for college to
students who may have an interest in a UW System campus. Texts will officially begin
in mid-Feb, but you can sign up through mid-March. Interested juniors should text
keyword Prepare to 99000 to enroll.
Your deadline for submitting any course selection changes for next year is March 9th.
8th grade-Juniors:
While you can always see your future requests in your
PowerSchool account, a copy will be sent home for your records as well as a reminder
to double-check your requests.
Seniors: Remember to finish your senior year strong. Colleges do receive transcripts
at the end of your senior year in order to verify graduation and to make sure you don’t
have a “senior slump.” Even though you’ve been accepted, your grades still matter!
Local Scholarships information will be handed out on Thursday, March 2nd. It will
also be available through Google Classroom. All materials will be due by Friday,
March 31st, at 3:45 pm. This gives students four full weeks to complete the materials.
Please contact Diane Raue at 872-5302 or [email protected] for more
information about any of the above events.
Congratulations to Caitlyn Tipton and Drew Gunnink. Both reached the 1000
point club this season. Caitlyn reached the goal against North Fond du Lac on
1/5/17 and Drew reached the goal against Sheboygan Falls on 1/31/17.

Ready, Aim, Fire!
Submitted by Laconia Science/Math Teacher Beth Jenson
As their first semester final project, the Laconia Physics students built and analyzed
catapults. Students were required to build a catapult or trebuchet that would launch a
tennis ball the farthest possible distance (the goal was 15 meters). Students had to keep a
journal as they researched, built, and tested their machines. Their final individual reports
included several calculations regarding projectile motion, momentum, and energy, as
well as explanations for how Newton’s Laws, conservation of energy, and conservation
of momentum applied to their catapults. The students also had to reflect on the building
and engineering process and propose improvements to their machines. The students are
graded on their final, individual calculations and reports, as well as on the performance
and design of their catapults. This year, we also had a side competition of which team
could launch the tennis ball the farthest: see the results below. We always have fun on
catapult launching day, one of the highlights of the year in Physics!
1st Place: Sam Bauer, Zachary Foth, Tyler Radavich, 24.3 meters
2nd Place: Mykenna Dehn, Sarah Laudolff, Bekah Tilstra, Elizabeth Walters, 22.6 meters
3rd Place: Zach Coffeen and Hannah Grahl, 20.8 meters

The Altitude Report from
Cirrus High School
Submitted by LHS/CHS Teacher Josh Demski
This month, I would like to highlight some of the work that Cirrus students presented
at our showcase night in January. The sheer number of presentations prevents me
from telling you about all of them, but I will do my best to highlight the variety that
Cirrus embodies. Senior Steven Berry presented a three dimensional graph which
allows us to visualize plots of functions containing imaginary numbers. Steven’s
presentation went through the history of different groups of numbers and built up
to imaginary numbers, including what they are and why they are necessary. Junior
Sydnie Pollock presented on the economics of YouTube. Her presentation explained
what someone has to do to make YouTube broadcasting a career and highlighted just
how to monetize YouTube. Sophomore Shannon Saunders presented a calligraphy
sample of the poem Hinges by Shel Silverstein. This presentation showed how one
should read poetry as well as Shannon’s interpretation of three poems. Junior Sadie
Newbury presented a geyser as the capstone for her research on Earth science. The
geyser, made of flasks and glass tubing, was fully functional and erupted regularly
throughout the night. These were just a few of the projects presented at the showcase.
We encourage everyone to stop in and see what our students are doing.
Last month’s model U.N. competition was canceled due to weather conditions, but
that didn’t stop our students. Cirrus held its own mock model U.N. competition in
house. Debate was fast and furious with Steven Berry, representing Russia, facing
off against most of the rest of the world over Russian annexation of Crimea from
Ukraine. The real model U.N. competition where our students will face off against
Notre Dame Academy and Plymouth HS will be held at Marian University on
February 7th.
On March eleventh, Cirrus High School invites you to come help us raise funds for
our model U.N. team by attending our Star Wars movie marathon. Cirrus will be
playing Star Wars Episodes IV, V, III, VI, and VII in that order. This is a great time
for you to come get familiar with Star Wars if you have never seen the movies before
or, if you are a lifelong fan, to enjoy them with an audience. There will be Star Wars
trivia, games, movie props, themed snacks, a costume contest and silent auction
baskets. A suggested donation of five dollars will cover all five movies!
If you would like to become a part of Cirrus High School, applications for the spring
2017 semester are available at http://www.cirrushighschool.com/apply-now/.
Cirrus student Sydnie Pollack created a series of comics that illustrate
the different forms of government. This one demonstrates democracy and
dictatorship. Stop by Cirrus to see the rest.

Spring Book Fair at Brandon School
Submitted by Sue Fellerer
Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits.
It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who
they are. It will even help them get into college! Here’s what you can do to help
children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
Set the example. Let children see you read.
Have a collection of books in the home. Update this collection routinely to keep
pace with changing tastes and reading skills. Talk about books and what your child
is reading.
Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to
read.
Brandon School’s Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids
want to read to our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books
for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in
shaping your child’s reading habits.
