Launch of the Hoarding Panel The Hoarding Panel has been set up by the Safeguarding Adults Team as a result of a need being identified across various agencies, both statutory and third sector, and recognition that a multi-agency response is needed to adopt a clear framework to ensure that when services are required there is a process for planning solutions tailored to meet the needs of the individual and to utilise a person centred approach. To ensure that the person who hoards is supported appropriately To provide practitioners with a multi agency, pro active, risk management group forum – to share and consider strategies to support the work of the practitioner already involved, and to provide evidence in terms of decision making, and risk management strategies. To gather statistics in terms of the numbers of people who hoard who are requiring some support. This will enable services to consider future resources required, and to use the referral system as a means of providing evidence to support development of services for those who hoard. M.M. It can help you to change the thoughts and feelings that drive you to hoard. Royal College of Psychiatry - http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy may also be useful for treating symptoms of anxiety, according to research published recently in the British Journal of Psychiatry. Researchers looked at changes in anxiety levels among patients with generalized anxiety disorder using different treatments. They found that MBCT and cognitive-behavioural therapy-based psycho-education were both effective in reducing anxiety symptoms. www.psychiatry.org M.M. Department of Health and Social Care M.G. I.M. As a behaviour, it is quite common and most people who hoard possessions do not suffer from any psychiatric disorder, however, in some cases the problem may progress to become so severe that it causes significant distress and impairment. Though usually covert, hoarding can also become a concern for others when health and safety are threatened by the nature or amounts of ‘clutter’ accumulating within, and sometimes overflowing from, the sufferer’s environment. M.M. Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture M.G. I.M. M.C. Launch of the Hoarding Panel Environmental Legislation turns to the treatment of hoarding rather than of the hoarder and more towards environmental neglect than self-neglect. When hoarding grows to a problem level, possibly spilling over beyond the hoarder’s own home the environmental health service may be among the first to know. M.M.
